After James Gray finished reading David Grann’s book “The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon” – a nonfiction chronicle of British explorer Percy Fawcett’s obsessive quest to find a lost civilization buried deep in the Amazonian jungle – he was confused why Brad Pitt had sent it to him.

“I have absolutely no idea what they want me to do this,” said Gray when he was guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “There had been nothing in my career as a director that had shown I could do anything like this.”

Paramount had bought the book for Pitt , whose production company Plan B (“Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave”) ultimately produced the film. Pitt had always wanted to work with Gray, and while it didn’t happen this time, Pitt will star in Gray’s Sci Fi film “Ad Astra,” which is shooting this summer.

The search is on for Screen International’s annual talent showcase.

Screen International is looking for new actors, writers, directors and producers to showcase in its 13th annual Stars of Tomorrow portfolio.

For the first time, Screen will open a direct line for recommendations, which should be directed to stars@screendaily.com.

Open from now, the final deadline for submissions is June 1, 2016.

Candidates for inclusion in Screen International Stars of Tomorrow should be professional and with a track record, albeit brief, in the film business. They should be UK or Republic of Ireland nationals, ideally under the age of 30. Directors may not yet have shot their first feature. All names will be verified in a lengthy vetting process.

Stars of Tomorrow is the film industry’s most successful new talent showcase, with an unrivalled track record for discovering fresh UK and Irish actors and key creatives.

Screen International is to join with the BFI London Film Festival to launch its celebrated Stars of Tomorrow for the first time.

This year’s selected actors, directors, writers and producers will be unveiled by Screen and the Lff at a high-profile industry event during the festival, which this year runs October 7-18.

The move is part of an ongoing collaboration between Screen and the Lff and provides an exciting platform for celebrating the best and brightest new UK and Irish talent during one of the busiest times in the British film calendar.

This year marks the 12th anniversary for Screen’s highly-respected showcase of the UK and Ireland’s hottest talent, which boasts an impressive track record in identifying future stars.

Last year, Lupita Nyong’o stepped out from obscurity to wow crowds in "12 Years a Slave" and earn her first Oscar. 12 months later, supporting actor workhorse David Oyelowo is taking a similar jump, earning rave reviews for his role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in "Selma." The unexpected common link between the two performances? Brad Pitt and his production banner Plan B. Now, according to Variety, Pitt will play matchmaker for this critically acclaimed pair: They’ll star together in Plan B’s new indie film "Americanah." Based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel of the same name, the story follows a Nigerian immigrant couple surviving in their new home and struggling to keep their relationship together. Pitt is producing, along with Nyong’o and Andrea Calderwood. According to Variety, after having a positive experience working with Plan B on "Selma," "Oyelowo jumped at the opportunity to board another project they were producing.

Six months after Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o signed on to star in and produce Americanah, David Oyelowo has joined the cast. The story is an adaptation of the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Half of a Yellow Sun), which centers on a pair of Nigerian immigrants. The movie will follow their lifetime of struggles as their relationship grows stronger. The project is currently seeking a writer and director at this time.

Brad Pitt is producing through his Plan B Productions company, alongside Lupita Nyong'o and Andrea Calderwood (A Most Wanted Man). Lupita Nyong'o won an Oscar earlier this year for her portrayal in Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave, which Brad Pitt also starred in and produced. Plan B also produces the upcoming Selma, which stars David Oyelowo in his Golden Globe nominated performance as Martin Luther King. No production schedule was given at this time for Americanah.

Adding their picks to the awards season deluge, the 45th Annual NAACP Image Awards unveiled the official list of nominees.

Not surprisingly, “The Butler” will compete in categories including Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actor & Actress and Writing.

Meanwhile, Kerry Washington’s “Scandal” is up for Outstanding Drama Series, and Ms. Washington herself received a nod for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.

NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock gushed, “This has been an incredible year from the artistic community, with phenomenal contributions across the board from the music, television, motion picture, and literature genres that have the power and impact to drive social change.”

The 45th Annual NAACP Image Awards will go live on Friday, February 21st.

Shortly after the Food and Drug Administration announced their decision to permit women as young as 15-years-old to purchase the Plan B morning after birth control pill without parental permission Wednesday, the White House announced it would appeal the decision. On Thursday, Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell that she was “surprised” by the White House’s decision. She added that “women and girls” should have “easy and instantaneous access” to the pill without parental consent.

Though basic cable networks like FX and AMC, as well as streaming giant Netflix, are trying their hand at the type of programming that made HBO famous, the cable company isn’t yielding an inch. Variety is reporting that the venerated cable channel is developing the new series “Paper” with Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B. Based on the New Yorker article "Pay Up" by Jake Halpern from October 2010 (read it here), “Paper” will follow “a former cocaine dealer and gangster named Jimmy who lives in Buffalo, NY and who’s sought to reform his life by getting into business as a professional debt collector, a gig that turns out to be just as potentially dangerous as his previous life of crime.” Non-fiction and short story writer Wells Tower will write and executive produce. No word on the production timeline, but our guess is that it’s still at least a way off.

Brad Pitt is getting into the TV business.

His production company, Plan B, and HBO are developing a drama called "Paper" about a former gangster working as a debt collector, Variety reports. It's based on a New Yorker article called "Pay Up" by Jake Halpern.

Pitt and Dede Gardner will executive produce, and Wells Tower is on board to write a pilot script.

The story is about a former cocaine dealer and gangster named Jimmy who lives in Buffalo, NY and who's sought to reform his life by getting into business as a professional debt collector, a gig that turns out to be just as potentially dangerous as his previous life of crime. New York -- The face is hardly wrinkled and the long blond locks appear unchanged, but Brad Pitt, who will turn 49 in December, is increasingly preoccupied with the passage of time and the thought that his rarefied place in movies is fleeting.

In last week's episode of "The Walking Dead," the high walls of Woodbury came down between our favorite lady travelers. Andrea, seduced by the promise of safety and hot showers (not to mention hot something else with a certain non-elected official) stayed; Michonne, convinced that this so-called safe haven was anything but, walked through the front gates with the Governor's blessing, never to be seen again.

Except for the part where they track her down and try to kill her, of course, because Woodbury is actually the worst.

Merle and a team of mercenaries are on Michonne's tail, and she's left a message to them in a forest clearing: a zombie body part pictogram that reads, Go Back. Full Disclosure: If you had asked us at the start of the new television season if we’d still be watching Elementary four episodes in, we probably wouldn’t have answered in the affirmative. Yet here we are on November 8th, eagerly awaiting tonight’s episode thanks in no small part to the winning performances of Sherlock star Jonny Lee Miller and partners in crime-solving Jane Watson. (Lucy Liu) and Captain Gregson (Aadan Quinn). The latter of whom we recently had the pleasure of chatting during a stop in Toronto to talk about the hit CBS series, what appealed to him about playing Sherlock’s supportive Captain and the controversy that comes with starring in a hit television show.

CBS recently picked up Elementary for a complete twenty-two episode first season. What does that vote of confidence mean to you as an actor?

Aidan Quinn: It’s a great feeling.

We at Bollyspice.com sometimes like to bring you news on events outside of the world of Bollywood and we recently attended the Mobo awards in Liverpool to bring you details on the awards ceremony that saw some of the music industries brightest stars in attendance.

Established by Kanya King and Andy Ruffell in 1996, the Mobo Awards recognise and celebrate artists who create urban music. The Mobo Awards also lent their support to the recently held Lebara Mobile Asian Music Awards which saw Kanya King hand out the award for Best Urban Act to British Asian singer Arjun.

Speaking about the Mobo’s Kanya King told the media, “Tonight has been a night not only for home grown talent such as Emeli Sande and Plan B who we’ve championed from the beginning of their careers, but also less represented genres of music such as gospel, jazz, African which are equally important for Mobo.

With the release of the first trailer for World War Z coming Thursday, November 8th (check out a sneak peek here), the powers-that-be have finally gotten their act together and launched the film's official website along with revealing its logo/title treatment.

Brad Pitt plays a U.N. employee racing against time and fate as he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly zombie pandemic, and his Plan B shingle is producing. London — Indie pop quartet Alt-j has won Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize, beating more established acts to the 20,000 pound (roughly $32,000) prize at the Roundhouse in north London.

Formed of four Leeds University students who met in 2007, the band's sharp but spare vocals, genre-bending sound and occasionally bizarre, nasal lyrics propelled them onto the charts well before its members found fame.

Critical reception to their debut album, "An Awesome Wave," was extremely favorable and the band was heavily tipped to beat artists including rapper Plan B and singer-songwriter Richard Hawley, who were also among the prize's 12 finalists.

The rapper topped the poll with 19.3% of the vote with his iLL Manors album, picking up 490 of the 2,560 votes cast. Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize hopefuls Plan B and Jessie Ware are among the acts who have seen a huge album sales boost as a result of their nomination. According to the Official Charts Company, the rapper has had the biggest sales lift, shifting 43,000 copies of iLL Manors since it was announced as a contender for the award. Its total sales figure now stands at 140,000.
