Cannes Film Festival Unveils Poster Featuring Catherine Deneuve
Image
French film legend Catherine Deneuve will be front and center at the Cannes Film Festival as the subject of the official poster for its 76th edition.

The shot of a young Deneuve in 1968 standing on the Pampelonne beach, near Saint Tropez, as the cameras roll on La Chamade by director Alain Cavalier is the iconic photo for the poster this year. The French romantic drama had Deneuve playing Lucile, the mistress of a wealthy man who misses the material comforts of life when she leaves him for a younger lover.

“Her heart beats frantically, hurriedly, passionately. Like the heart of cinema that the Festival de Cannes celebrates every year,? Cannes organizers said of the poster in a statement.

Côte d’Azur, 1968.

The iconic Catherine Deneuve embodies what cinema should never stop being: elusive, daring, irreverent. Here is the poster of the 76th Festival de Cannes. From May 16 to 27, let's celebrate the love of cinema.

Throughout her career, Deneuve has worked with some of Europe’s greatest directors, such as Luis Buñuel, Francois Truffaut, Manoel De Oliveira, Roman Polanski and Lars von Trier, to name a few.

Deneuve’s long rapport with the Lido harks back to 1967, when Buñuel’s “Belle de Jour” — in which she played a bourgeoise Paris housewife who seeks erotic liberation through part-time work in a brothel — won the Golden Lion. Deneuve then won the Venice Volpi Cup for best actress for her role in Nicole Garcia’s “Place Vendôme” in 1998, and presided over the fest’s jury in 2006.

One day earlier, Aniston and Theroux coordinated in head-to-toe black ensembles at the launch dinner...

Hot off her acclaimed turn as a Polish woman struggling to survive in America in James Gray’s period drama The Immigrant, French actress Marion Cotillard is set delve right back into another period romance, this time with auteur Nicole Garcia. The film, titled Mal De Pierres, sounds like another potential awards contender for Cotillard.

It’s based on the best-selling novel by Milena Agus, which has been translated into more than 15 languages since its publication in 2007.

Alian Attal will produce the film, which Garcia co-wrote with her usual partner Jacques Fieschi, for independent film company Les Productions du Tresor. In a statement, Attal said:

Richard Robbins obituary
Composer who scored nearly every Merchant Ivory film from The Europeans onwards and was an integral part of the brand

The Guinness Book of Records notes that the 44-year collaboration between the Indian producer Ismail Merchant and the American director James Ivory was the longest in the history of cinema. They might equally have added the screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who joined the duo from the start. And a member of Merchant Ivory Productions for almost as long was the composer Richard Robbins, who has died after suffering from Parkinson's disease, aged 71.

The Ivory-Robbins working partnership, which lasted over three decades, outdid in longevity such celebrated director-composer unions as Federico Fellini-Nino Rota, Michelangelo Antonioni-Giovanni Fusco and Alfred Hitchcock-Bernard Herrmann. Robbins scored nearly every Merchant Ivory production from The Europeans (1979) onwards, and was an integral part of the film company's brand.

The reason for the...

Jacques Tati and French film comedy
Jacques Tati was a master of burlesque. Emilie Bickerton on a French revolutionary

If you told Jacques Tati that his flight was delayed, he'd say terrific – and settle down to watch what he considered "the best movie of the year": people passing by. Observation gave the director all the material he needed for the four films he made over three decades. Tati liked to call himself "the Don Quixote of cinema", which captures his combination of idealism, imagination and generosity. Monsieur Hulot, his charming, self-effacing but out-of-synch comic creation, is the character with whom he is most often, and fondly, associated. But Tati's work cannot be reduced to the man with the too-short trousers. His films – from the early burlesque of Jour de fête in 1949 to the highly stylised modernism of Play Time in 1967 – might not have an intellectual message, but they are delightful witnesses to the second half...
