In the first movie, the actors did more of their own stunts. In this film, more doubles were used. Some actors even had multiple doubles:

Robin Shou (Liu Kang): Doubled by Theo Kypri, Tony Jaa and Ray Park. James Remar (Rayden): Doubled by Mark Caso and Ray Park. J.J. Perry (Cyrax): Doubled by Mark Caso and Buster Reeves. J.J. Perry (Scorpion): Doubled by Theo Kypri. Keith Cooke (Subzero): Doubled by Theo Kypri. Talisa Soto (Mileena): Doubled by Dana Hee. Sandra Hess (Sonya): Doubled by Nikke Berwick. Red Williams (Jax): Doubled by Tyrone Wiggins.

In the British version four fighting sequences are slightly censored missing out breaking necks and other fight moves.

While some didn't return due to scheduling conflicts with other projects, the only cast member to not return due to not liking the script was Linden Ashby (played Johnny Cage in the first film). A wise choice.

Bridgette Wilson (Sonya Blade) was scheduled to film "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Christopher Lambert (Rayden) ended up doing "Beowulf."

Yes, except it completely alters the ending of the first film. But Shao Kahn forcing his way into Earth Realm is the same.
