Kristin Scott Thomas is stepping behind the camera for the first time, directing My Mother’s Wedding, a film she co-wrote with her husband, John Micklethwait. Inspired by her own family’s experiences, the story centers on three sisters who return home for their mother’s third wedding.
Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, and Scarlett Johansson lead the cast, with Scott Thomas herself playing the mother, Diana Frost. Each daughter has a very different life—one is a nurse, another a Hollywood actress, and the third a Royal Navy officer.
As they gather for the big day, old wounds resurface, and the family is forced to confront their past. Unexpected wedding guests only add to the chaos.
This marks the third time Scott Thomas and Johansson have played mother and daughter on screen, following The Horse Whisperer (1998) and The Other Boleyn Girl (2008).

In 1998, Robert Redford starred in The Horse Whisperer, a Western that had the potential to be a huge hit, yet the movie's shocking ending put it at a severe disadvantage. Since the 1960s, Redford has been a significant presence in Hollywood. He quickly rose to fame after starring in films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and All the President's Men. Later, Redford pivoted towards directing, and earned several Academy Awards and nominations. Thus, by 1998, Redford was established as both an actor and director, putting The Horse Whisperer in a good place for success.
The Horse Whisperer follows a young girl named Grace who gets into a traumatic accident with her horse. Determined to heal both her daughter and the horse, Grace's mother, Annie, decides to move them to the ranch of a "horse whisperer" named Tom. Over time, Grace begins to recover while Annie and Tom grow closer.

The Western is a genre that has come to define cinema for as long as pictures have been able to move on a screen. From the classic iconography of Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy to the more modern takes on the genre, there is no denying the cultural legacy that Western movies have left on the cinematic industry. A consequence of this major influence of the genre, is that Westerns often have enormous financial backing behind them, giving them some of the biggest budgets in movie history.
Whether that's the story of a trapper abandoned by his comrades after being mauled by a bear, or a tribute to the heroic soldiers of the Battle of the Alamo, some Westerns' budgets are as large as the movies themselves. Now, a big budget is no guarantee of a good movie, or even of commercial success. Some of these big-budget Westerns were hugely...

The cast of Jurassic World Rebirth includes a wide variety of familiar faces and up-and-coming stars. The movie is the latest installment in the iconic franchise that kicked off in 1993 with the Steven Spielberg classic Jurassic Park, which was adapted from the 1990 Michael Crichton novel of the same name. It was a smash hit both critically and commercially, grossing $1.058 billion against its $63 million budget and becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year, going on to be nominated for three Oscars and winning all of them, spawning a major multimedia franchise in the process.
There are now seven movies in the Jurassic Park franchise including the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, with two trilogies apiece centering on largely distinct groups of characters, who were all brought together in the 2022 legacy sequel Dominion. Netflix’s next rom-com has arrived in the form of “A Family Affair,” and it’s directed by a veteran of on-screen love stories in Richard Lagravenese. And, according to the director, making a rom-com in 2024 is indeed different than it was when he made “P.S. I Love You” in 2007.
The movie, now streaming, centers on Zara Ford (Joey King), a 24-year-old assistant to mega-movie star Chris Cole (Zac Efron). When Chris strikes up a romantic relationship with her mom Brooke (Nicole Kidman), Zara promptly freaks out, having had a front row seat to how horrible Chris is to women over the years.
Zara actively works to separate the two, but as the story progresses, she comes around to seeing that the pair just might be good for each other.
Lagravenese has plenty of experience in the romance arena — he wrote 1995’s “The Bridges of Madison County” and 1998’s “The Horse Whisperer,...

The original title of the new romantic comedy A Family Affair was the much-edgier MotherF*&#er, and despite being very funny in terms of the basic story of an older woman who starts an affair with the younger movie-star boss of her 24-year-old daughter, it probably sets off wrong expectations for what is a smart, character-driven romcom that serves up a delicious cast with a witty script and engaging situation for all. The generic title gets more to the point as this all directly involves three people in a multi-generational coming-of-age tale for all in their search for personal happiness.
Netflix actually is using that original title in its ad line for the film, calling it “A MotherF*&#er of a Love Story,” and that says it all. Coming on the heels of Amazon’s rom-com The Idea of You — in which a fortysomething single mom (Anne Hathaway) finds unexpected...

"Three Days of the Condor" is one of the most suspenseful crime thrillers that came out of '70s cinema. The New Hollywood movement was in full effect with audiences turning to gritty, low-budget films for thrills outside of the failing studio system. Sydney Pollack was one of the foremost leaders of the cinematic era, and "Three Days of the Condor" was one of the final entries into its canon. Annie's decision to leave without saying goodbye to Tom is driven by her desire to spare him the pain of goodbye and avoid getting caught up in their relationship. The bittersweet ending of The Horse Whisperer highlights the complexity of relationships and the difficult choices that often have to be made in the real world. Before Scarlett Johansson became famous for starring in action blockbusters and Oscar-winning dramas, she played a compelling role in Home Alone 3. There isn't much that is memorable about the 1997 sequel, which follows eight-year-old Alex Pruitt (Alex D. Lintz) as he stays home from school with chickenpox and battles criminals. When compared to the original two installments starring Macaulay Culkin, Home Alone 3 didn't capture the same magic, but Johansson's appearance stands out and proves that she was already on the path to becoming an acclaimed actor.

When Brando was named the winner of the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather,” Littlefeather gave a speech on Brando’s behalf declining the honor with a mix of applause and jeers, with presenters Raquel Welch and Clint Eastwood making dismissive jokes about Brando and Littlefeather’s actions later that evening.
“You made a powerful statement that continues to remind us of the necessity of respect and the importance of human dignity,” former Academy President David Rubin wrote.

Exclusive: We hear that Amazon in a competitive situation has taken the Jennifer Lopez-produced Skydance TV series Backwards in Heels off the table.
The show will be written and directed by Oscar nominee Richard Lagravenese and follows the aspirational and timeless story about the glamourous women living at the Barbizon Hotel in post-wwii New York City.
Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina will produce under their Nuyorican Productions. Julie Goldstein is also producing.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost are producing for Skydance TV.
The Barbizon Hotel, located at 140 East 63rd St. on the Manhattan’s Upper East Side, was for several decades a female-only residential hotel for young women who came to NYC for professional opportunities. Built in 1927, the 23-story hotel was a blend of Italian Renaissance and late Gothic revival and Islamic decorative elements. No men were allowed above the ground floor, and strict dress and conduct rules were enforced.

When Denis Villeneuve developed “Dune” he turned to Eric Roth to adapt Frank Herbert’s sprawling 1965 saga. Roth had already scored five Oscar nominations for adapting books for the screen, including one win for Robert Zemeckis’ Best Picture-winner “Forrest Gump.” Roth’s other Oscar adaptations include collaborations with directors David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), Michael Mann (“The Insider”), Bradley Cooper (“A Star is Born”), and Steven Spielberg (“Munich”).
Roth was not a sci-fi aficionado who adored the Herbert novel, but he saw what Villeneuve could do with it. In a wide-ranging Zoom conversation, Roth and I talked about the agony of being rewritten and his misreading of the power of Netflix when Fincher made his groundbreaking series “House of Cards.”
We also discussed his joyous collaboration with another septuagenarian, Martin Scorsese, turning David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,...

Few actors have dominated movie screens in quite the same fashion as Scarlett Johansson, who will receive the 35th annual American Cinematheque Award on Nov. 18. The American Cinematheque will be honoring Participant Media with its inaugural Power of Cinema Award.
Able to bounce back and forth between massive worldwide blockbusters and critically acclaimed independent productions, the Oscar-nominated Johansson landed Academy consideration for 2019’s “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and has cemented herself as one of the most iconic women on the screen, making her a natural fit for the honor. Upcoming is the animated “Sing 2” in which she voices Ash, the female crested porcupine, one of the main characters of the toon.
Having done comedy, romance, action-spectacle, and nearly everything else in between, she never pigeonholed herself into one genre, opening herself up to various cinematic possibilities.

Pal Joey, the notoriously tricky Rodgers and Hart musical with a score as lovely as its lead characters are thorny, is heading back to Broadway next year in a newly revised version to be co-directed by Tony Goldwyn and Savion Glover.
Casting hasn’t been announced, but the revised Pal Joey will arrive during the 2022-2023 Broadway season with choreography by Glover, a new book by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Richard Lagravenese and additional music selected from the great Rodgers and Hart canon. Scarlett Johansson, whose long-awaited solo Marvel movie Black Widow finally hits theaters and Disney+ next month, is being feted this fall as the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. After going with a virtual presentation last year for 2020 honoree Spike Lee, the organization’s marquee event returns to normalcy, with its November 18 ceremony taking place at the Beverly Hilton where it was held last in 2019, when Charlize Theron was the recipient.
The event is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that continues its year-round programming at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. After a year-plus shutdown due to the pandemic, the Aero just reopened June 10. The Egyptian, now under the purview of Netflix, is undergoing renovations before reopening as a venue both Netflix and American Cinematheque (on the weekends) will be using for their programming.

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

While his country’s aesthetic had allowed for a softer tone, conservative tradition prevailed a half century ago to move things back to the rigid separation of gendered movement and the complete erasure of sexuality. How Aleko’s dancers perform becomes a visual metaphor for their nation. It will not be defeated. It will not show weakness. And anyone who dares to refuse giving one hundred...

The Call of the Wild plays like the kind of live-action movie Disney released in the ’60s and ’70s, then in the ’80s and ’90s under the Touchstone banner. This film, adapted from the Jack London novel of the same name, was developed as a 20th Century Fox project, before the studio got scooped up by the Mouse House.
Directed by Chris Sanders and starring Harrison Ford, the playful-yet-nostalgic tone is established early on. We meet a dog named Buck, the live-action/CGI hybrid lead of the story, as he bounds about a luxurious California home. His owner, Judge Miller, loves the pet but is tired of his hyperactive shenanigans. Buck eats up a celebratory feast because he just can’t help himself, the rascal! He appears to be a creature destined for bigger things. If those last two sentences read a bit cheesy, consider it a fair approximation of the film itself.

The Toronto International Film Festival gives, and takes away. Toronto’s notoriously friendly audiences are not to be trusted entirely — with the exception of the People’s Choice Award, which has gone to such Best Picture winners as “Chariots of Fire,” “American Beauty,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The King’s Speech,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “Green Book.”
So when TIFF audiences give a standing ovation, you have to figure out what it means. They enthusiastically applauded Netflix’s “Marriage Story” with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson on hand, which continues to build momentum from Venice to Telluride and Toronto, followed by New York, where it will play like gangbusters on its home turf. (It’s sitting at 96 on Metacritic.)
Never-nominated Johansson is duking it out in the Best Actress race with thrice-nominated Oscar-winner Renée Zellweger (“Cold Mountain”), who channels emotional wreck Judy Garland at the end of her tragic life in “Judy.
