1997's RocketMan starring comedian Harland Williams was a bit of a wild card. It was produced at a time in the 1990s when Disney was remaking and making its classics (and even some from other studios). 101 Dalmatians (1996) gave birth to not one, but two more films in the franchise and introduced the world to Glenn Close's take on Cruella de Vil. 1997 would also see a successful remake of Flubber starring Robin Williams. Not to mention the ever-popular remake of The Parent Trap that would follow in 1998, showcasing the talents of a young Lindsay Lohan.

Way back in 1986, when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was still in development, the original casting sheets called for actresses to play a 15-year-old character named Leslie Crusher, the daughter of Dr. Beverly Crusher. "Her remarkable mind and photographic memory," the character rundown read, "make it seem not unlikely for her to become, at 15, a Starfleet acting-ensign. Otherwise, she is a normal teenager." As casting and development continued, however, Leslie was transformed into a teenage boy named Wesley, and more closely modeled after Gene Roddenberry's own 15-year-old self (Roddenberry's middle name is Wesley).
Wesley wasn't widely liked by Trekkies, as he seemed too much like a brown-noser. He was too eager to please the adults in his life, too well-behaved, and definitely too smart. Fans point to the instances wherein a teenage boy, working with the best and brightest in Starfleet, managed to be the only one to solve a massively difficult space conundrum.

Quick LinksWhy Disney's Tall Tale is an Underrated GemHow Tall Tale Represents Some of Disney's Best WorkWhy Disney Needs to Return to Classic American Folklore
Without fanfare or much acknowledgment, 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Disney's underrated western fantasy, Tall Tale. The 1990s were a distinctive time for Disney films, caught between traditional values and a desire for modern appeal. This era produced a bizarre mix of movies alongside fairy tale classics like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast were odd entries such as George of the Jungle and Flubber. Tall Tale fell into the latter category, a neglected attempt to modernize classic American folklore once beloved by Walt Disney himself. As it reaches its 30th anniversary, its legacy invites a deeper look at what it reveals about Disney's relationship with Americana, the legacy of its characters, and why it deserves to be remembered.

Robin Williams had a long-established Hollywood career, and became known for a variety of movies, including Dead Poets Society and Patch Adams. Some of his most celebrated roles are from comedies (The Birdcage and Mrs. Doubtfire), and his knack for humor, along with a charismatic personality, made him beloved by many. Other films, whether blockbusters and/or critical hits, have included The Fisher King, Jumanji, Night at the Museum, and Disney’s Aladdin, where Williams famously portrayed Genie, a character now immortalized in popular culture.
Williams starred in many more projects, some underperforming, including Father’s Day and Death to Smoochy, the latter only generating $8 million. Still, he is often considered among the best parts of any movie he was in, and Williams' film legacy remains strong as audiences continue to enjoy his work across all genres. When it comes to science fiction, for example, he appeared in Flubber, A.

Fans on Facebook have been speculating on what a hypothetical Flubber 2 would starring Adam Sandler would look like, leading to a concept poster making the rounds.
The poster seems to be referring to the 1997 Flubber movie starring Robin Williams, but that was not the only time the story of a professor and his "flying rubber" was told on screen.
Disney released the first Flubber movie, The Absent-Minded Professor starring Fred MacMurray, in 1961, and a sequel, Son of Flubber, in 1963. 1988 saw a remake of the original movie, also called The Absent-Minded Professor, this time starring Harry Anderson (and available to watch on YouTube).

Bedknobs and Broomsticks deserves a modern remake to enhance its engaging story with updated visuals. The Blob, a sci-fi classic, could benefit from modern special effects to create a more terrifying Blob. Air Force One's iconic crash scene could be improved with modern CGI for a more realistic impact.
Special effects have developed and changed over the years, and some great movie titles deserve to be remade for the modern world with a fresh and updated look. The first movie that used special effects was Alfred Clark's 1895 reenactment of the beheading of Mary, Queen of Scots, and since then, the world of cinema has progressed an incredible amount. Disney has come a long way since the days of Steamboat Willie and the Studio’s first major feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since its start, Disney has grown into a massively successful production company, arguably the biggest. Each decade of Disney offered something different and brought countless classics to life on the big screen. In the ‘40s, it was Dumbo and Pinnochio. In the ‘50s, it was Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. The ‘60s brought the live-action classic Mary Poppins, followed by The Aristocats and Robin Hood in the 1970s. While the ‘80s brought greats like The Little Mermaid and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Netflix's Chupa may not be the most eye-catching movie to subscribers scrolling through the streaming service, but it's worth a watch. The film does an engaging job of recreating the feel of kids' movies from the '90s. Aside from providing nostalgia for older viewers and portraying a decent representation of Mexican culture, the work embodies the spirit of the family-friendly friendship movies that were all the rage back then. In short, through its plot and treatment of the titular character, Chupa encompasses the best qualities of the era's style regarding family entertainment.
For starters, the '90s had a knack for taking supernatural, mythical and outrageous animals or creatures and turning them into the cutest mascots that could easily be converted into a franchise or merchandise. It was an act of rebellion. That’s how Steve “Spaz” Williams saw it in the early ‘90s, and that’s how he reflects on it even more clearly now. The choice to not-so-subtly sneak the moving image of a computer generated Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton into Kathleen Kennedy’s line of vision was something he was warned not to do; something that was out-of-bounds since Steven Spielberg’s then developing Jurassic Park was already committed to relying almost exclusively on stop motion animation and animatronics. It was something that never should’ve happened.
And yet, when Kennedy, a producer on Jurassic Park, toured Ilm studios alongside Frank Marshall, there it was “in the background” on one of Spaz’s computer screens: a fully digital T. Rex walking with a fluidity hitherto unseen in giant monster movies. The industry would never be the same.

The film follows Steve “Spaz” Williams, the revolutionary and rebellious visual effects designer behind “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “Jurassic Park,” “The Mask,” and so forth, to build out
“I had it all,” Williams laments in the film’s opening voiceover, clumsily calling up the wide variety of films that open with the similarly toned (and now meme’d to death) “you’re probably wondering how I got here?” query. The framing is cliche, setting up an unnecessary narrative artificiality to what’s clearly a real heartache. But once Leberecht throws the narrative back into his engaging subject’s hands to recount his turbulent life, from childhood to his time at Lucasfilm...

“My friend of many decades, Tommy Kirk, was found dead last night,” wrote Petersen, who has long been an advocate for child actors through his organization A Minor Consideration. “Tommy was intensely private. The Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter Award is going to the Smith family this year, honoring Will Smith and his family for their "longstanding contributions to the world." Following Williams' death in 2014, his children Zak, Zelda, and Cody have been working with Glenn Close and Change to Mind, a non-profit working to end the stigma surrounding mental illness. Every year, they've given the Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter Award to "an individual in entertainment we feel embodies the best sparks of Dad, still living and bringing joy."
In a video posted to Smith's YouTube account, Zak Williams can be seen speaking about the award, revealing the group's decision to honor Will Smith and his family this year. "As family that gets asked about the word legacy a lot, we decided that this year that we'd like to honor one that was being built with kindness, unity, and love right in front of us,...

Prop Store's auctions are always a treat for genre fans, because they're able to offer some of the very best props and costumes. It measures a massive 11 feet in length and originally had systems for lighting and CO2 effects.

HollywoodIn #WatchWithTNM, we look back at this film about Kevin, a boy who wishes one night that he never has to see his family again.Nikhita VenugopalYears ago, when I was definitely old enough to know better, I woke up on an airplane still sitting on the tarmac and found that I was alone. My parents were almost certainly sitting next to me when I fell asleep, but now, the two seats next to me were empty. For about two minutes, I grappled with the only possible answer to my situation: They had left me. Turns out they hadn’t left me, and had just moved a few rows away to some empty seats. But for a few minutes, I got to imagine what I would do if I was totally and completely alone. In theory, it’s every kid’s dream to be left alone. No one to tell you what to do,...

Sam Lloyd, an actor best known for portraying lawyer Ted Buckland on “Scrubs,” died on Thursday of complications from lung cancer, his agent confirmed to Variety. He was 56.
In January 2019, Lloyd was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and cancer, which eventually spread to his lungs, jaw, liver and spine. He received the diagnosis just weeks after his wife, Vanessa, gave birth to their first child.
Over the course of his three-decade career in television and film, Lloyd also held roles on shows like “Desperate Housewives,” “Seinfeld,” “Modern Family,” “The West Wing,” “Cougar Town,” “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Shameless,” as well as films “Flubber” and “Galaxy Quest.”
Lloyd was also a talented musician. He sang in a cappella group The Blanks – which made several appearances on “Scrubs” as The Worthless Peons – and played bass guitar in The Butties, a Beatles tribute band. Lloyd had also been slated to direct a country rock musical,...

Disney bucked box office tradition this year, opting for the first time since 2014 not to release a movie the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
But that doesn’t mean the studio won’t still gobble up the competition around Turkey Day. Disney unveiled “Frozen 2,” which debuted to a stellar $130 million in North America, a week earlier than the traditional holiday release. It’s a strategic move that Lionsgate and Warner Bros. previously deployed with “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” two of the highest-grossing Thanksgiving releases ever.
Like those offerings, “Frozen 2” should power an impressive sophomore outing during a time when young kids are out of school and parents are off from work.
“Hunger Games: Catching Fire” still holds the record for the biggest Thanksgiving haul for its second weekend in theaters, when it generated $109 million between Wednesday and Sunday in 2013. But since then, Disney has slowly...

The 1990s were an interesting time for the film industry. The decade brought movie fans lots of unforgettable films, and many of them were movies that the whole family could enjoy.
Related: 10 Things In Disney Movies We Didn’t Understand As Kids
Toy Story is a great example of this because it is one of the best kids’ movies of that decade. Another great movie that came out during that time was the film Flubber, which is actually a remake of a movie that was called The Absent Minded Professor, which was released in the early 1960’s.
This decade was full of fun kids’ movies that are already considered classics these days. Here are some of them.

For the 12th time in recorded Thanksgiving box office history (since 1982), Disney will own the holiday stretch again as their sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet looks to hit a five-day of $70M, a number far exceeding the previous five-day of 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph even though it launched on a three-day weekend during the first weekend of November clearly a Fss of $49M, Friday through Tuesday of $56.7M. Disney sees Ralph Breaks the Internet in the high $60Ms range.
Fandango reports that Ralph Breaks the Internet is outpacing the advance ticket sales of Disney’s previous two Thanksgiving launches at this point in time, Coco ($72.9M)and Moana ($82M), and of course Wreck-It Ralph. For Disney, as usual, the weekend is a slam dunk. The first Wreck-It Ralph was Oscar-nominated for best animated film and grossed $189.4M stateside, $471.2M Ww.

Sony's Venom trailer has seen some pretty funny fan edits over the past few months, but the latest mashup with 1997's Flubber is taking things to a whole new level of hilarity. Robin Williams and Tom Hardy merge the symbiote with Flubber, taking the drama and terror out and replacing it with fun. However, it certainly makes Flubber look like a dark and sinister movie in comparison. There's a lot going on in this new mashup and it truly needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.
Separate from each other, Robin Williams and Tom Hardy play characters who discover a brand-new mischievous substance that seems to have a mind of its own, which leads to some pretty funny encounters in this Venom and Flubber remake. Hardy's Eddie Brock getting taken over by Flubber is certainly a lot more tame that the symbiote, though it already looks like the...

John Hughes was, by his own admission, a very ordinary, non-exceptional kid. He didn’t even have a particularly noteworthy high school life, which is somewhat ironic given how effortlessly he managed to convey it in his film work.
He may not have been the kid he portrayed in his movies, but he related to them and wanted to show the world they weren’t as bad as other films routinely made them out to be. One of Hughes’ defining characteristics was his ability to see teenagers not as kids or as young adults, but as people. This, in turn, ensured that his films connected with a sizeable audience.
But Hughes wasn’t just about love triangles, prom nights and cliques – he was so multi-layered and moved away from the teen films that brought him so much success, writing side-splitting comedies and romantic dramas, replacing the teens with twenty somethings and families.

It was August 11, 2014. The theater was full with an advance screening of The Giver starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. The red carpet event was live-streamed prior to the showing as stars from the film flooded in and entered the New York City party while we, in Knoxville, Tenn., gazed at the screen.
I checked my phone for the time and came across a message on the screen.
“Actor Robin Williams found dead at his home. He was 63.”
A friend put it best when he said that hearing the news of Williams’s passing surprised him with grief.
It did the same for me.
Now, to this point, Robin Williams was just another face (or voice) on the screen to me. An actor who had given life to Genie in Aladdin, the main character of Flubber, and was Mrs. Doubtfire. Nothing of note, but fun most of the time.

A life-long fan of Robin Williams has scored a viral hit with his impersonations of the late actor.
Jamie Costa - a young actor with a resemblance to Williams - has passed 2 million hits in just four days on YouTube.
In the video, he channels Williams's performances in films like Flubber, Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning, Vietnam.
Costa wrote underneath the video: "My tribute to the man whose spark ignited my passion. Rip Robin Williams."
He also performs a scene from Good Will Hunting, the film which earned Williams an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Costa isn't just a Williams impressionist, and has posted videos of himself impersonating Indiana Jones, Owen Wilson and Matthew McConaughey.
It recently emerged that Williams made plans to restrict the use of his image after his death.

Robin Williams died in August, but his spirit is very much alive in the heart of actor Jamie Costa, who is garnering online acclaim for nailing spot-on impersonations of 18 characters Williams played over the course of his career. The South Carolina-based performer not only sounds just like Williams as he channels Peter Pan from “Hook,” Euphegenia Doubtfire from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and Professor Philip Brainard from “Flubber” (to name a few), he looks just like the late actor, from the hair to the facial expressions. Costa’s YouTube video “Never Had a Friend Like Him” has attracted over 1.3 million views since being published.

It is something of a tragedy that the last role anyone gets to see of Robin Williams is in the inferior Night At The Museum sequel that has just hit cinemas (he’s actually in Terry Jones’ Absolutely Anything but in a vocal performance only next year), but it’s not entirely unfitting. The actor and comedian was a brilliant talent, not only as a stand-up but also as a genuine straight actor, and his career was typified by some serious highs; unfortunately, it was also blighted by some terrible lows, painting a picture of contradiction that was ultimately the most bewildered reaction to his suicide.
Because sanctifying departed heroes is foolish, it remains important to look at Williams’ career as a whole: the greatest tragedy of his professional life was not that he wasn’t offered the opportunity to truly show his ability, it was that...
