weirdness towards the end

Stars Stephen Rea, oscar nominated for Crying Game. Does a lot of vampire, underworld stuff. Heather Locklear, model and star of Dynasty, TJ Hooker. Locklear is agent Hanson, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When her meeting with some shady characters is interrupted, she is hauled in to figure out what's going on. Rea is Cypher, assassin for hire. But when she finally tracks him down, things are MUCH more complicated than they seem. Who are the good guys anyway? It's barely okay. Like a dog chasing its own tail. Gets weird towards the end. It deserved better. Directed by Greg Yaitanes, who does a LOT of television series work.

Good idea with unrealized potential

"Double Tap" asks the question: Can a beautiful deep cover FBI agent (Locklear) fall for a shadowy hitman (Rea) with scruples? This, the film's premise, has potential which is mostly lost in a morass of Hollyweird window dressing including jerky jump cuts, unnecessary blends, strange music, over acting, cheap atmospherics, etc. with little attention paid to story coherence and character development. Bottom line: "Double Tap" is little more than an fodder for those in the mood for some noirish crime drama on late night TV.

Watchable

Stephen Rea is a philosophical gardener. Because gardening doesn't pay enough, I suppose, he's also a hit man with a signature of leaving a rabbit's foot next to his victims. Heather Locklear is in some law enforcement agency, although which is never quite clear. While she's trying to track him down, he's hired to kill her, so of course they fall in love which is never consummated.

It's a mildly ridiculous script, but director Greg Yaitanes manages some nice touches, like filming Miss Locklear in her group scenes so she is tiny. The leads underact, there are a few performers who will later become notable, like Mykelti Williamson, and the 90- minutes slid by before I noticed.

An FBI agent meets up with a mysterious hitman during an undercover operation.

Double Tap was a film relegated to HBO's cheesy Friday night premieres and that's a shame because it deserved so much more. It stars Heather Locklear (!), no I did not stutter, as a FBI agent involved in a sting operation who gets caught in the middle of a hitman's grocery list, seemingly he's taking down all the drug dealers in town. Along for the ride is Kevin Gage and Mykelti Williamson from Heat and the great Peter Greene. What distinguishes this effort is its terse dialogue, vivid characterizations, and stylish camera moves (loved the score by Moby). Double Tap should be held as a model for what a B movie low on cash but high on content can do. And Premiere magazine liked Montana, ha! This is the real deal folks.

A film you'll probably not finish.

I did only because I was "in for a penny" and thought I'd give it its running time. Cliches abound and Rhea switches between Irish and American accents without him, the crew, the director, possibly his agent even noticing. Locklear takes crack which is new in her acting career, I'd assume she wasn't faking it due to her acting "skills". At 1hr 31mins it's painfully long. I wasted my time so you'll hopefully not waste yours. I'm sure this seemed a good idea by at least 10 people looking at the credits, that's about all they could afford. It was made 27 years ago now so let's let it RIP. If I have to watch it again, I'll be chatting with my undertaker during the viewing. If you've got nothing better to do, darn my socks, it'll be more rewarding, trust me.

Watchable, but somewhat generic...

Yet another movie that I had never heard about prior to sitting down to watch it. So I suppose writers Erik Saltzgaber, Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and director Greg Yaitanes had every opportunity to entertain and impress me with this 1997 crime thriller.

The writers put together a fair enough script that started out nicely and actually kept a good pace throughout the course of the movie. It was an interesting storyline, though it was a bit generic. I am not saying that it was a bad thing, but I just could have wished for a couple of twists to the storyline along the way, to thrown a curveball at the audience and thus make it less generic. But it definitely was an entertaining enough movie and watchable movie.

The cast ensemble in the movie is quite good. I have to say that I didn't believe that Heather Locklear was capable of carrying a movie such as this with her acting talent. But she proved me wrong, because she definitely carried the role and the movie quite nicely. The movie also has the likes of Mykelti Williamson, Stephen Rea, Terrence Howard, Peter Greene, Robert LaSardo and A Martinez on the cast list. So you have some familiar faces on the screen. The acting performances in "Double Tap" were good.

While "Double Tap" was watchable, I have to say that I doubt that the movie will ever grace my screen a second time. Why? Well, because there just simply wasn't enough meat on the storyline, and the generic aspect of the narrative just doesn't support more than a single viewing.

My rating of director Greg Yaitanes's 1997 movie "Double Tap" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Over stylized, self-righteous garbage

This movie is horrible. It is over stylized with ridiculous jump cuts and flashbacks. The plot is non existent and the acting is horrible. The only entertaining thing about it is Peter Greene, because he is Peter Greene.

Lawnmower man!

It doesn't sound like much. A direct-to-video flick with a generic title, starring Heather Locklear. However, Stephen Rea -not the type of actor you would expect in this kind of movie- gives a full-fledged characterization of a hit-man with a conscience and idiosyncratic habits (and I don't mean the double tap to the head of each of his victims; his other skills include gardening...). His relationship with the FBI agent played by Heather Locklear rings true. Add to this a flamboyant directorial style and a good soundtrack, and you get one of the better B movies of the year. Rating: 7.

Definitely worth watching

This film was a pleasant surprise to watch. Heather Locklear was realistic and hot as the tough FBI agent with an introspective demeanor. She shows her range, with performances from this film to the cheesy Melrose Place. However, really, do FBI agents actually look like her and Gillian Anderson? The plot was believable and fast-paced, with Stephen Rea as the methodical/conscientious/efficient thug-killer. Some of his hits were pretty imaginative. The score could have been better, as well as the supporting cast. 7 out of 10.

My new favorite movie!

Great visual production. Heather Locklear should play more roles like this - she's good. Stephen Rhea is one of my fav actors, as well. I love "hit man" movies and this one rates right up there.

Stephen Rea saved it...

One thing saved this film.. Stephen Rea's acting job. I have never seen a personallity archetype in a hollywood film, that comes close; which really made his character interesting to watch. Heather Locklear is hot... That is the only thing she has going for her. Personally she should stick to the Money Talks type roles, as she did not carry this film well. Peter Greene once again played Peter Greene, as he has done for every movie since The Mask. So, I cannot say much about him. It was fun to watch I suppose... But reiterating, the Stephen Rea performance really saved it.

Would I watch this film again? Yes.

"Mowing Helps Me Relax!"...

DOUBLE TAP features Heather Locklear in a much grittier than usual role. As FBI agent, Katherine Hanson, she finds herself up against a mysterious hitman whose signature is that of the title.

Hanson and her team must track this person, before every other criminal in town winds up dead! This gets complicated when Hanson gets a bit too close to her quarry.

This is a surprisingly effective thriller, and Ms. Locklear is far better than one might, at first, expect.

Actually, the only complaint is due to the lighting. The late 1990's ushered in the whole every-scene-must-be-dark phenomenon. This film is no exception. So, unless the characters are outside, in full sunlight, they're always cloaked in smoky, shadowy dimness! Even in the daytime! Ugh!

In spite of this, the movie is recommended...

bizarre tale of revenge

Very strange film. A former cop kills criminals with 2 shots to the head, then leaves a rabbits foot near the body. A team of FBI agents are assigned to track him down, and one of the agents becomes emotionally involved with the killer. Unusual use of cameras adds a lot to the appeal of the movie; however, the film still came off as a high end 'B' movie. Too many glaring holes took away from the story, leaving it unrealistic. Corny one liners and overdone dialogue also acted as a detraction. Still it was an interesting show; different from a lot of films in this genre.

Unexpected 1:00AM thriller

So I came back after a fulfilling Thursday night, only to sit down for one of the best movies I've seen (regardless of the budget) in quite some time. Locklear fits the role to a tee...and this is coming from a guy whose mother tortured him by watching General Hospital after baseball practice EVERY SINGLE time! Rae demonstrates a keen role that made me shiver and relate at the same time. Even the cinematography was exceptional. A little over the edge at times with the one-liners, this mind-game of a flick still let's you laugh at the dark-humored, though deeply plotted, script. If you're going to watch this, watch it for the dialogue as much as you watch it for the action...and Heather, that's a really neat tatoo... <3

A script so bad nothing could make a watchable movie from it

This is an unbelievably stupid movie. How does an idiotic farrago of a script like this ever get made into a film? Nothing any of the characters says or does is for a moment credible... and yet the piece is apparently aiming to be a "gritty, realistic crime drama". The director sort of has a stab at some meaningful creative input, and I'd guess would probably be quite likely to produce something watchable with a real script... but nothing could save this nonsense. More believable characterisations and narrative would have been produced if the actors had been restricted to mouthing "Gaga. Googoo." for the entire length of the film. I'm really sick of being expected to accept this sort of rubbish as if it were a credible effort at film-making. Not recommended to anyone... if you have low enough standards to watch this, then you should be quite happy watching any flickering image without bothering to pay admission or rental. Well ok, the score is interesting, and Heather Locklear shows signs of a performance better than might have been expected from her record... but really *nothing* could defeat such an abysmal script.
