New Shakespeare Movie Directed by Oscar Winner Chloé Zhao Debuts with 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
A new William Shakespeare movie directed by an Oscar winner has debuted with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Shakespeare is perhaps the most notable playwright in the English language, having penned iconic Elizabethan dramas, histories, and comedies including Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Richard III, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet.

Innumerable movies adapted from Shakespeare plays have hit the screen from the very beginning of the art form. These range from early silent movies like 1916's The Merchant of Venice to modern adaptations such as 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You(reimagining The Taming of the Shrew) and 2006's She's the Man (reimagining Twelfth Night).

However, there are...

‘Together’ Movie Ending Explained: Did Tim And Millie Become One?
Image
Together’s ending revealed that Tim and Millie, who were so unsure of each other, finally “took the plunge” and became one (quite literally). While hiking in the woods, Millie Wilson, and her “boy partner,” Tim Brassington, had fallen into the ruins of a collapsed chapel that once belonged to a cult. There, Tim had drunk from an unholy pond, which was likely touched by the conjoined demons that the cult worshipped. Later, as Tim and Millie spent the rest of the night in the cave, their legs got stuck together, suggesting that this infected water found its way to Millie as well, and now both of them had become inseparable. No matter how much they tried, or what they did, they couldn’t stay apart. The question here is: was the couple ready for such commitment? Well, let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Tim Was Afraid To Commit

Video: Lupita Nyong'o on Breaking Character During Twelfth Night Rehearsals
Image
Lupita Nyong'o is having a hard time not breaking character during rehearsals for Shakespeare in the Park's Twelfth Night. The Academy Award-winner is starring as Viola in the new production alongside Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Sandra Oh, which begins performances in August. "I don't do a lot of comedy," Nyong'o shared during a recent visit to The Tonight Show. "So being in a room and just laughing all day, I'm wondering how I'm going to keep a straight face when we're finally performing!" She went on to explain how participating in this production gave her a chance to do something "lighter," which was appealing. Twelfth Night is also her favorite Shakespeare play. "We had a VHS tape of it growing up, of some British performance, and I watched...

Stephen Colbert Claps Back at Trump’s Gloating About ‘Late Show’ Cancellation: ‘Go F— Yourself’
Image
Stephen Colbert had a succinct message to President Trump, one that involved an anatomical impossibility.

In his monologue opening Monday’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Colbert referred to Trump’s celebrating CBS’s sudden decision to axe the show. The U.S. president, in a post on Truth Social last Friday, wrote, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.”

With mock outrage, Colbert said, “How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?”

Colbert then appeared in an on-screen frame that said “Eloquence Cam” and, staring directly into the camera, affected a clipped New York accent: “Go fuck yourself.” (The f-bomb was bleeped out.) The line drew a massive roar of approval from the audience in the Ed Sullivan Theater, followed by cheers of “Stephen! Stephen! Stephen!”

In the monologue, Colbert noted that...

Star Trek's Patrick Stewart Once Played A Shakespearean Character On Tng, And You Probably Missed It
Image
The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Defector" begins with Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) watching Data (Brent Spiner) enacting a scene from William Shakespeare's "Henry V" on the holodeck. For those who missed reading "Henry V" in high school, the story follows the young, recently crowned King Henry as he gears up to invade France. The young Hal struggles to be taken seriously, as his youth was spent carousing with drunks and lowlifes (as seen in "Henry IV" parts I and II). Hal, however, proves to be an inspiring battlefield presence, giving his fellow Englishmen the encouraging speeches they need to charge into battle. The play culminates at the Battle of Agincourt, which took place in 1415.

On "Star Trek," the scene that Data performs comes from Act IV, scene I, when King Henry has disguised himself as one of his own soldiers. He aims to infiltrate his men...

Sir Ian McKellen Set To Open ‘Twelfth Night’ Adaptation With All Trans & Non-Binary Cast
Image
Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen is set to open Trans What You Will’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, starring an all-trans and nonbinary cast.

“Twelfth Night is perhaps the funniest and most moving of Shakespeare’s plays,” he said in a statement to the Trans What You Will Theater, posted on Instagram. “This is achieved through the complexity of gender and sexuality from first to last. I’m really looking forward to the impact of this latest version of the play at The Space. I hope to see you there!”

There have been mixed reviews about his role as opener, as well as the concept of an all-trans and nonbinary cast. “Nothing says ‘inclusivity’ as all the production being trans or nonbinary, right? Imagine making an ‘all straight people’ production and being proud of it,” wrote one person on X.

Under the Trans What...

15 Movies You Didn't Know Are Based On William Shakespeare Plays
Image
Think The Bard is boring? If you're one of the millions forced to slog your way through William Shakespeare's plays during high school, you may think his language is too flowery, his style is too dated (despite the fact he wrote in Modern English), and his stories are out-of-touch with our day-to-day lives. Respectfully, dear reader, you are wrong. We bet you have seen and loved a Shakespeare story without even realizing it, as his plays have inspired numerous movies.

We're not talking word-for-word adaptations, like 2015's "Macbeth" starring Michael Fassbender; or even movies that use more...shall we say... "creative license," like Joel Coen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet," or your average theatre director's revisionist steampunk-in-space version of "Cymbeline."

No, Shakespeare has inspired not just adaptations, but inspirations. "Original" movies spanning a host of genres that borrow heavily from The Bard. How heavily?...

Daniel Dae Kim becomes first Aapi Tony nominee for Lead Actor in a Play; record 7 Asian acting bids
Image
With today's announcement of the Tony Awards nominations, Daniel Dae Kim has made history as the first Aapi nominee in the Lead Actor in a Play category. Kim was recognized for his performance in the revival of Yellow Face, where he plays a satirical version of playwright David Henry Hwang. Kim's nomination is also part of a record-setting year for Asian representation at the Tonys.

Bd Wong was the first actor of Asian descent to score a Tony. Coincidentally, his 1988 win for Featured Actor in a Play came courtesy of another Hwang play, M. Butterfly. Since then, Iranian performer Arian Moayed has competed in the same category, with nominations for Bengal Tiger in the Baghdad Zoo (2011) and A Doll’s House (2023). Paul Chahidi was nominated in the same race in 2014 for Twelfth Night, then Michael Aronov won the featured prize in 2017 for Oslo.

Other past Asian nominees include Lea Salonga (Miss...

Kit Connor, Jake Gyllenhaal, Denzel Washington could make Tonys history for ‘Othello’ and ‘Romeo + Juliet’
Image
In all of Tony Awards history, there has never once been a season in which three performers have been nominated for Best Actor in a Play for Shakespearean roles. That could very well change this year, as both Othello and Romeo and Juliet were revived this season boasting three major stars: Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington in the former, and Kit Connor in the latter. If all three receive nominations, it would mark a historic first.

Othello is the rare drama that features two lead actors, as the title role (Washington) and that of his junior officer Iago (Gyllenhaal) predominate the proceedings. Indeed, Christopher Plummer was nominated in the lead category for playing Iago back in 1982. As of this writing, Gold Derby's odds predict the Othello duo to earn nominations, as Gyllenhaal and Washington currently rank second and third, respectively. Connor, who played Romeo in Sam Gold’s production of...

‘She’s the He’ Review: An Endearing Debut Takes on Coming Out While Coming of Age
Image
It doesn’t take long for the action in Siobhan McCarthy’s charming directorial debut, She’s the He, to kick off. The film, which premiered at SXSW, opens with two friends scheming to get laid before they graduate from high school. Their libidinous preoccupations, like those of the protagonists of Superbad, Booksmart and more recently Bottoms, are familiar. But unlike their predecessors, Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich) aren’t just considered losers by the vague standards of a rigidly stratified student body. Everyone also thinks they are gay and dating each other.

To change their reputation, the pair decide to come out as trans. The logic behind this plan doesn’t completely hold up, but the execution leads to an entertaining and endearing coming-of-age drama.

For the most part, She’s the He follows the beats of a typical comedic bildungsroman, but McCarthy also finds distinctive ways into the genre.

Remembering Star Trek and Star Wars actor Clive Revill, 1930-2025
Image
The great New Zealand-born actor Clive Revill has passed away at the age of 94. He died in Sherman Oaks, California, having succumbed to dementia on March 11. Revill's storied career encompassed performances on the stage, silver screen, and television, and spanned from Shakespeare to horror and Star Trek to Star Wars, and included many voice-acting credits.

Revill, who would have turned 95 on April 18, entered the Star Trek universe in 1991, when he guest starred as Sir Guy of Gisbourne in the fourth-season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Qpid.” The character seeks to marry Maid Marian/Vash (Jennifer Hetrick) and ultimately clashes with Robin Hood/Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Merry Men, a/k/a Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), Worf (Michael Dorn), Data (Brent Spiner), Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and Troi (Marina Sirtis).

This Controversial Best Picture Upset Enraged Fans, but I Agree With the Academy
Image
At 2025's 97th Academy Awards ceremony, 10 films vied to win Best Picture. However, the Oscars have not always included this many in the lineup. In fact, less than 30 years ago, there were only five nominees in the category. And the one that came away victorious in the 71st Academy Awards continues to be a controversial pick.

To some, Shakespeare in Love was an unexpected hit when it was released in 1998. Starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow (also named Best Actress), it excelled as a period drama and a fun historical reimagining. While some moviegoers continue to believe it did not earn its win, further reflection indicates that the Academy did, in fact, make the right decision.

Shakespeare in Love Faced Off Against Modern Classics Image via Miramax Films

Both critics and audiences tend to agree that Shakespeare in Love is a brilliant example of the romantic and period genres. However,...

The 15 Best Disney Channel Original Movies, Ranked
Image
For kids who grew up with the Disney Channel from the late 1990s all the way through to more recent years, Disney Channel Original Movies (or DCOMs) were a fundamental part of our childhood viewing habits, even though Disney's original television series are much more famous. Depending on how old you are, there are some that stand out as highlights more than others, but each era of the channel can claim at least a few major hits.

Is our enjoyment of these films merely the result of looking at the past through rose-colored glasses? That's certainly a part of it. But amidst the cheesy, family-friendly TV movies being churned out at a dizzying pace, every once in a while there's one that's legitimately good and can stand on its own merits. Whether they had a better-than-usual script, fun music and creative production, or young actors who already had tremendous star quality,...

Emma Stone Had a Pocketful of Sunshine in This A+ Satire Coming to Hulu

Nothing quite screams the late aughts and early 2010's like a comedy loosely related to a classic work of literature. There was She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes, which was based on the William Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. There was the absolute classic that was 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Styles and the late-great Heath Ledger, which was based on The Taming of the Shrew. In 2010, one comedy came about loosely related to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Now, Easy A starring Emma Stone, is coming to Hulu next month.

Dame Judi Dench gives an update of her deteriorating vision, says she won’t be able to attend events alone
Image
Dame Judi Dench has been very candid about her struggle to continue acting, as her vision has worsened over the last few years. She revealed back in 2012 that started to suffer from age-related macular degeneration (Amd). In 2021, the 90-year-old actress revealed at the London charity Vision Foundation that she started to have friends help her memorize lines by reading her dialogue to her so the repetition can help her remember. In 2023, Dench revealed on The Graham Norton Show that it’s become “impossible” for her to read scripts due to her condition, which is especially defeating as she prided herself on having a photographic memory.

Variety reports that Dench, who is known for her work on the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig James Bond movies, appeared on the Fearless podcast where she says she is now unable to attend events unless she has someone with her to help her around.

Judi Dench Doesn’t Mind Using Her Poor Eyesight as an Excuse to Ditch Events
Image
Dame Judi Dench opened up about the difficulties her deteriorating eyesight has caused — as well as a few cheeky positives — during a recent interview on the Fearless podcast.

The 90-year-old actress has been battling advanced macular degeneration (Amd), a condition that does not cause blindness, though it does make facial recognition and reading especially difficult. On Fearless, Dench said that in any event she goes to these days, “Somebody will always be with me,” adding with a laugh: “I have to now because I can’t see and will walk into something or fall over.

“Somebody will always be with me. I have to now because I can’t see and I will walk into something or fall over,” said the celebrated Oscar-winning star, speaking on the Fearless podcast.

Dench, 90, first revealed in 2012 that she had age-related macular degeneration (Amd), and more recently described the severity with which it had impacted her career.

Speaking on “The Graham Norton Show” in 2023, she said it had become “impossible” to learn lines because of her eyesight loss. Dench long prided herself on having a photographic memory when it comes to scripts, but that it was now something she could no longer rely on it.

“It has become impossible and because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only...

One Underseen William Zabka Movie Raises A Bewildering Karate Kid Question
Image
Thanks to his performance as Johnny Lawrence in "The Karate Kid," William "Billy" Zabka's appearance exemplifies the archetype of all 1980s movie bullies. Suppose you close your eyes and think of the type of guy who would pester the charming underdog of an '80s teen movie. In that case, he's probably a tall, beefy blonde whose parents definitely had a photo of Ronald Reagan hanging above the TV in their living room. It's not Zabka's fault that he became the blueprint for this character type, but when looking at the landscape of high school movies from the decade, it certainly seems like every casting director was looking for "a Billy Zabka type." In some instances, that meant straight-up hiring him.

Zabka's follow-up to his breakout role in "The Karate Kid" is an oft-forgotten teen comedy directed by Lisa Gottlieb called "Just One of the Guys." A loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night,...

5 Reasons You Should Watch “Mary” on Netflix if You Haven’t Already
Image
“Some are born to be great, others have greatness thrust upon them.” This line from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night feels almost tailor-made for Mary, a figure whose greatness was never a matter of choice but divine destiny. So when Netflix’s Mary was announced, the anticipation was high.

What if we told you that one of the most pivotal figures in human history has rarely been fully understood? What if, despite the countless retellings of her story, there was still a deeper layer waiting to be peeled back? That’s what Mary, Netflix’s bold attempt to explore the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, offers—at least in theory.

Some films promise an intense, soul-stirring journey, blending the richness of history with a heart-tugging story. D.J. Caruso’s film Mary attempts to deliver such an experience, plunging into the heart of one...

Emma Stone’s Organs Got Shifted While Wearing Corsets in ‘The Favourite’?
Image
Were Emma Stone’s organs shifted due to corsets? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Emma Stone learned the true meaning of “beauty is pain” on the set of The Favourite—and no, we’re not talking about acting challenges. For her role as Abigail in the 18th-century historical drama, Stone faced a corset that was anything but comfortable. It was so tight her organs, if you read that right—her organs.

Stone, appearing on The Graham Norton Show, shared that her first time wearing a corset for a role was both painful and eye-opening. “It’s historically accurate, but I couldn’t f—ing breathe,” she admitted, giving major props to the costume designer, Sandy Powell. “I would smell menthol… and it sort of made me think I was in a wide open space, then—bam—I was back to not breathing,” she laughed.

But that wasn’t even the worst of it.

Why Amanda Bynes Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
Amanda Bynes had always been a natural performer. She began acting as a child, appearing in several TV commercials, demonstratively oohing and ahhing over the Cut N' Style Barbie or snacking on Buncha Crunch to a variation of the "Addams Family" theme music. At school, she appeared in the musicals "Annie," "The Sound of Music," and "The Music Man." She was bitten by the theater bug early on.

Bynes experienced her big break in 1996 when she joined the cast of the hit sketch comedy series "All That" on Nickelodeon. She was 10. "All That" ran for a whopping 11 seasons from 1994 to 2005 and proved to be a stamping ground for up-and-coming talents, serving sort-of as a junior version of "Saturday Night Live." Keenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Jamie Lynn Spears, and Nick Cannon also broke out thanks to the popularity of "All That." Bynes was a regular cast member for the show's third through sixth seasons,...

10 Best 1980s High School Romance Movies That Still Hold Up
Image
The 1980s were full of sweet and relatable romance films set in high school, and many of them have held up over the years, making it easy to revisit their compelling tales of love. John Hughes is an undeniable force in '80s coming-of-age films, approaching them as a writer and director with a care and understanding for their subjects. Other directors joined Hughes in creating beloved '80s teen romance films that could be thoroughly enjoyed years later, including Cameron Crowe and Martha Coolidge.

The best romance films set in high school utilize social cues and adolescent feelings to provide obstacles for their main characters. The pressure to fit in with others, the insecure feelings associated with unrequited love, and social cliques that seem impossible to diffuse are all foundational concepts for teen romance films. No matter one's age, such emotions and circumstances can be understood by a wide range of audiences,...

Maggie Smith’s 12 Best Performances, from ‘Jean Brodie’ to ‘Downton Abbey’
Image
Dame Maggie Smith was many things. Hilarious and tragic. Elegant and aloof. Enchanting and deadly serious. Most will attribute their appreciation of her multiple-generation spanning career to roles in the “Harry Potter” or “Sister Act” franchises or perhaps “Downton Abbey,” which elevated her fame to a level she often spoke disdainfully of. For Smith was not an actress who was in it for the red carpets or accolades — though she received many, including two Oscars, five Baftas, four Emmys, and a Tony — but rather treated acting as a sturdy profession, one that required of her the utmost presence while on set or stage.

Beginning her career in the early 1950s, she played Viola in William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at The Oxford Playhouse, followed later by roles in “As You Like It” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at London’s famed Old Vic theater. She rose to prominence on...

Image
One of the world's most beloved and distinguished actresses, Dame Maggie Smith, has passed away at the age of 89. Smith is best known for being a core part of millennials' childhood as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the "Harry Potter" franchise -- on set, she despised the hats and is said to have had a scary reputation. Later, she earned critical acclaim as Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the wildly popular "Downton Abbey" series and its two feature films, though she grew tired of the fame it brought her.
