When Gary Levin departed Variety to serve as USA Today’s top TV reporter in early 1998, “Touched by an Angel” was still airing on CBS.
“The X-Files” was a hot property for Fox. “Suddenly Susan” anchored Mondays for NBC. “Boy Meets World” was halfway through its run on ABC. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was ascending on the WB and “Moesha” was an anchor for Upn.
After 28 years at USA Today, Levin is drawing the curtain on his full-time journalism career, stepping down as television editor.
The television industry was light years removed from today’s sprawling, global pay-tv marketplace at the time Levin arrived at USA Today’s New York office. Which means he was perfectly positioned at what was then the nation’s most-read newspaper to chronicle the wild ride of business, content and technological innovation that have vastly expanded television.

This article contains spoilers for 2025's "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
When "I Know What You Did Last Summer" debuted in 1997, it was met with a mixed reception by critics, but brought in a Billy Blue-sized boatload of cash at the box office. A $17 million shooting budget nabbed $125.3 million before enjoying a sizable chunk of change thanks to the still-booming home video rental market. A sequel was inevitable, and just over a year later, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" hit theaters. Although boasting a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes isn't something to write home about, it was still a financial success.
Unfortunately, the sequel's less-than-stellar reception didn't help launch the series into a formidable franchise. The direct-to-video sequel "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" arrived nearly a decade after the party was over, and the Prime Video series adaptation from 2021 was canceled after just one season.

Mara Brock Akil’s “Forever” is a story both timeless and of the moment. A skillful update of the 1975 Judy Blume novel of the same name chronicling two teens experiencing first love, the series stars Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. as two Black student athletes in 2018 Los Angeles as they romance each other while dealing with the pressures of their very different parents. Swoony and evocative, it’s a rare show that centers the experiences of Black teens — and Akil herself was touched by the response from those who saw themselves in the characters.
“I’ve been floored by the response to ‘Forever,’ the recognition, the notes, the posts, the tears, so many people around the world told me that they have felt seen in ways they have never before, that they didn’t know how hungry they were until they were fed,” Akil said at the 2025 IndieWire Honors...

The Friday before the new Netflix adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel Forever was set to release, its creator Mara Brock Akil was power-walking through New York City for exercise. The Los Angeles resident was in town doing a round of press to support the show, and, in a full-circle moment, found herself on the campus of NYU, a college her lead character, Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.), considers when gaming out his future in Episode Seven. The moment forced Brock Akil to pause and reflect in the midst of crunch time.

In the fast-paced environment of television production, there isn’t always a chance for co-workers to express their appreciation for one another. It’s also not often that kind of acknowledgement is advocated for, but for her recent episode of “What No One Tells You,” “Forever” showrunner Mara Brock Akil shared that a simple “thank you” goes a long way in forming a connection.
During her interview, Akil reflected on her first job in Hollywood working as a production assistant on “The Sinbad Show” in the early 1990s. It was there she first met the man who would become her mentor and give her many of her first writing jobs in the industry, Ralph Farquhar. At the time, he was working with another writer/producer, Michael J. Weithorn, who would go on to create “South Central” with Farquar. Akil desperately wanted to be part of this show and found her...

“It’s not personal.”
How many times have you heard this before knowing full well that everything in life, no matter how hard you spin it, is personal? We are all, quite literally, persons after all (though at times it may be questionable). And yet, for the sake of our own sanity and the need to work with others, we accept it, compartmentalize, and move on. But what if there was another way?
Speaking to IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking for the latest episode of “What No One Tells You,” TV creator Mara Brock Akil offered valuable insight on how to manage what may seem like rejection, but could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. It’s all about perspective, so keep reading to learn how to shape your own.

At first glance, those familiar with author Judy Blume won’t recognize the Netflix series “Forever” named after her classic 1975 novel. Instead of tracking the book’s romance of Michael and Katherine, two young white teens, Mara Brock Akil’s adaptation moves the action to 2018 and builds a world around Keisha and Justin, two Black teens in Los Angeles, as they experience the universal rush of their first love.
Early in her career, “Girlfriends” and “Being Mary Jane” creator Brock Akil matured as a writer and producer working on singer Brandy’s teen sitcom “Moesha.” As with that memorable series, rising star Lovie Simone, whose credits include “Greenleaf,” “Selah and the Spades” and “Manhunt,” fits perfectly in the role of Keisha. This eight-episode deep dive into navigating first love and maturing into adulthood isn’t just a young woman’s coming of age story, however. Michael Cooper Jr., who co-starred...

Award-winning writer-producer Mara Brock Akil opens up about discussing her Netflix adaptation of Forever... with original author Judy Blume.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Akil recalled being inspired to bring Forever to the small screen by her experience as a mother, much in the same way that Blume wrote the original novel for her daughter. Akil recalled, "Judy and I talked about this. In the '70s, parents—especially white parents—were like, 'They're safe in the world. A lot of activity is coming from the new I Know What You Did Last Summer film. The sequel/reboot to the 90s horror franchise showed a new trailer to the attendees at this year’s CinemaCon, which means the official trailer release should be stalking right around the corner. Additionally, some enticing new images from the film has just been released, which shows off the new cast along with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles from the first two movies.
There is also a question about whether Julie’s college roommate, who was portrayed by R&b singer Brandy Norwood, would also make a return. According to Deadline, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is teasing that it is a possibility. The director of the new film recently spoke with People and was asked about it. She simply replied, “You’ll have to go see the movie.

Issa Rae is working to spotlight the history of Black television with her upcoming HBO docuseries “Seen & Heard,” which she discussed at length in a keynote conversation at SXSW.
The moderator, Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley, described the first episode of “Seen & Heard” as focusing on how studios in the past “used Black audiences” and then “abandoned them as soon as it was convenient.” Rae said she wanted to dive into that history because “it sounds like a conspiracy” on the surface, but producing the documentary proved to her just how that trend had played out.

You might have heard someone say that in the history of television and the history of particular networks,” Rae said. “But to have the actual creators, showrunners and writers chronicle the history of that is undeniable. Captain America: Brave New Worlddirector Julius Onah explains the film's seemingly out of place special thanks during its end credits.
Speaking to People, Onah opened up about the special thanks offered to Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer, who does not appear in Captain America: Brave New World. "I'm such a fan of hers, and when the conversation was being had about this film, she put in some kind words for me with Kevin Feige and had spoken to [Anthony] Mackie as well. James McTeigue made an explosive directorial debut with the critically acclaimed V for Vendetta in 2005, and has since added five more movies to his resume. His last cinematic project was Breaking In, a home invasion thriller starring Gabrielle Union, released in 2018. Despite receiving mixed reviews initially, the movie managed to cultivate a modest fan following, thanks largely to Union’s powerful performance. Breaking In has recently become a free streaming hit, ranking #4 on Freevee.
Breaking In centers around Shaun Russell (Union), a mother who travels with her two children to her late father Isaac’s secluded mansion, with high-tech security features. She must make the final arrangements to sell the estate.
But their trip takes a dangerous turn when four criminals break into the house looking for $4 million that Isaac put in a safe. They also take the children hostage and lock Shaun outside the house. The twist on the...

For most of his career, Ray J aka William Ray Norwood Jr. was referred to as "Brandy's little brother." To be fair, his sister Brandy was at one time one of the biggest stars in the world. Not only was Brandy one of the biggest music stars of the 90s, but she also had a hit television show Moesha and starred in countless theaters and made-for-tv movies. Brandy was truly one of America's teen sensations. She even had a namesake Barbie doll in stores across the country. Brandy's fame was always accompanied by her family, with her mother Sonja Norwood as her manager and little brother Ray J as an extra on her television shows and an escort on countless red carpets. In any other family, Ray J would've been the highlight because he starred in several shows himself, at eight years old, securing a main role in the short-lived...

Remember those celebrities who seemed to be everywhere you looked? The ones who graced every magazine cover, starred in the biggest shows, and dominated entertainment news? The entertainment industry is known for its unpredictable nature, where fame can be as fleeting as a shooting star. For every Tom Cruise or Jennifer Aniston who has maintained their A-list status for decades, there are countless others who fade from the spotlight.

The reasons for these disappearing acts are as varied as the stars themselves – some make conscious decisions to step away for a quieter life, others struggle with personal challenges, and some simply find new passions away from the cameras.

The currently untitled project will span the life and career of the 45-year-old musician and actress who came to fame as a young teenager. “This memoir is more than a book,” Brandy wrote on Instagram. “It’s a reflection of resilience, hope, and rediscovering myself beyond the fame, the music and the spotlight.”
The book, which Brandy described as being “one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life,” will be released by Hanover Square Press.

Writer, showrunner, and director Felicia D. Henderson has signed with Independent Artist Group (Iag), Variety has learned exclusively. She continues to be repped by Yorn Levine Barnes.
Henderson was most recently showrunner and executive producer on the Netflix series “First Kill,” which followed the budding romantic relationship between two teen girls — one a vampire and the other a vampire hunter.
Henderson began her entertainment career in the NBC management training program. Her desire to be part of the creative side of the industry led to her applying to and being accepted into the Warner Bros. Writers’ Workshop. From there, she landed jobs on shows like “Family Matters,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” “Sister Sister,” and “Moesha.”
Henderson then went on to develop the Showtime series “Soul Food,” which was based on George Tillman Jr.’s film of the same name. The show ran for four seasons and won multiple NAACP Image Awards.

In a world where movie sequels, prequels, reboots and legacy sequels are the norm, audiences may be surprised that a lot of their favorite films have actually been turned into TV shows that they've never heard of. Some of these missed the mark so completely that they have faded into obscurity.
Television shows like High Fidelity, 10 Things I Hate About You, Cobra Kai and What We Do in the Shadows are all perfect examples of television shows that absolutely lived up to the reputation of the original. Unfortunately, television isnt always so on point. There are many shows that fall flat for fans, and many more that almost threatened the reputation of the original.

A24s successful Rotten Tomatoes streak ended with The Front Room, which, at the same time, continues a disastrous 26-year streak for its lead actress. Thanks to its variety of movies, A24 has become one of the leading studios in the horror genre, bringing movies like Hereditary, The Witch, Talk to Me, and more. Thanks to these and more hits, A24 is now synonymous with high quality in horror movies, but its great Rotten Tomatoes streak has now ended with its most recent horror movie, The Front Room.

Brandy has returned to the horror genre with the movie The Front Room, which only makes me even more eager for her possible return to a popular horror franchise. Brandy has built a successful career in both music and acting, with her acting debut being the 1993 TV series Thea. However, Brandys big acting break happened three years later in the TV series Moesha, where she played the title character. In 1997, she made her big screen debut in Cinderella, where she played the title princess, alongside Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother.
The following year, Brandy expanded her acting career to the horror genre with I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, where she played Karla Wilson, Julies (Jennifer Love Hewitt) best friend. Since then, Brandy has balanced her music and acting careers, appearing in different TV shows and a couple of movies. Brandy recently played Cinderella again in Descendants: The Rise of Red...

"The Love Boat" holds a fascinating place in pop culture history. While most of the shows with reruns playing in heavy rotation today were in some way groundbreaking upon their initial release, "The Love Boat" is a novelty the likes of which modern TV rarely – if ever – tries to emulate. An anthology-like rom-com set aboard a cruise ship, "The Love Boat" featured a revolving door of guest stars and little connective tissue to speak of aside from the cast playing the crew aboard the ship.

You never knew exactly what you would get when "The Twilight Zone" began. The series — produced and largely written by celebrated Emmy-winning writer Rod Serling — was a loose collection of fantastical tales. Some were supernatural, some were science fiction. Some were comedies, and some were scary as hell.
It should come as little surprise that the "scary as hell" episodes are among the most memorable installments of the series. William Shatner's desperate screaming that there's a man on the wing of the plane in "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" was instantly iconic, and repeatedly remade. Agnes Moorehead silently fighting off an invading force of tiny homicidal aliens in "The Invaders" was strange and shocking, and seemingly set the stage for future "tiny monster" horror movies like "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "Gremlins."
But perhaps no "Twilight Zone" episode is more overwhelmingly terrifying than the one about a little kid with godlike powers.
