Having carved a solid niche in the porn world with his once-innovative first person amateur videos, John "Buttman" Stagliano ventured into the shot-on-film story feature genre just once with WILD GOOSE CHASE, a crude but entertaining sex/mystery. It's silly but worth reviving on DVD, having been lost in the transition from VHS.
Since the rest of his oeuvre is unscripted, spontaneous porn, GOOSE is not much in way of story, nominally putting detective Joey Slvera through sort-of-noirish antics in search of a mystery girl. The director's obsession with the female posterior is much in evidence, and made light of by the use of a symbolic goose popping up on-screen frequently almost in the manner of the more recent Aflac duck mascot in TV commercials. It guarantees that the viewer won't take any of this seriously.
Near the end of the film is one of the classic scenes in porn history, as Sean Michaels gets the deep throat treatment from the inimitable (and pre-breast enhancement) Jeanna Fine. Though still quite active in porn, this occurred during Sean's glory days, when he went to Germany to crank out dozens of equally classic sex scenes paired with the British diva Sarah Young.
Tech credits are unimpressive, as the film has a very ugly look to it. I suspect Stagliano's metier was (and still is) video and even though GOOSE was quite popular and even award-winning in its day, he immediately returned to his globe-hopping porn documentaries in search of the perfect rear.
