Clarissa (1991)

Zitate

Clarissa

Ändern
  • Lovelace: If you marry Soames I swear you will become the youngest and prettiest widow in the county.
  • Clarissa: I cannot admire a man with no morals.
  • Anna: Clarry, men put on their morals as we put on our stays!
  • Clarissa: I could have loved him.
  • Lovelace: I will see her.
  • Belford: Then you'll have to kill me first.
  • Clarissa: Do not be sad. I am not sad. Rejoice with me that all my worldly troubles are so near an end.
  • Lovelace: Her grandmother came to me, begged me to be merciful.
  • Belford: And you agreed?
  • Lovelace: Word of a gentleman, Jack.
  • [refusing Lovelace's marriage proposal]
  • Clarissa: I would not bind myself in covenant with you for a thousand, thousand worlds.
  • Lovelace: [after he has raped Clarissa] I love you.
  • Clarissa: Some new strategem?
  • Lovelace: Believe me.
  • Clarissa: Again? Like I believed Captain Tomlinson and Lady Betty? How you all must have laughed. Such a witty masquerade.
  • Uncle Anthony: [talking about Lovelace] Heir to a peerage, a fine paternal estate, two unmarried aunts. Mark that.
  • James: And an army of whores and bastards. Mark that.
  • Clarissa: I have always heard that you prefer not to confine your pleasure to more than one lady entirely.
  • [after Clarissa has fled from home, her family are trying to find her. Her brother goes to see her best friend]
  • Anna: Even if I knew where she was, which I don't, my mother has forbidden me to write.
  • James: Surely you do not mean to frustrate any hopes we have of a reconciliation?
  • Anna: On whose terms?
  • James: [to Anna's mother] Is it a daughter's place to bandy terms?
  • Anna: Or a brother's to impose them? If my friend wishes to be reconciled, I'm sure she remembers your address.
  • Lovelace: Where is she?
  • Dorcas: It's not my fault.
  • Belford: Bob. Stop now. Before you do something you regret.
  • Anna: Now mother, what workman throws away a sharp tool because it may prick his finger.
  • Bella: You know the rules. No letters.
  • Clarissa: Not even to Anna?
  • Bella: Your go-between to Lovelace?
  • Clarissa: [writing to Anna] You once told me adversity was my shining time, and so I think it is.
  • Clarissa: Dig a hole deep enough to conceal this unhappy body for I fear that those who would not stir to protect me living will move heaven and earth to defend me dead.
  • Clarissa: I should as soon die here as anywhere.
  • Lovelace: Spare us a shilling squire, spare us a shilling for an old soldier.
  • Clarissa: You tell me that my uncle, a man I never knew to lie, now requires me to pretend I am already married?
  • Clarissa: Look at me sir, not at him.
  • Tomlinson: Has she gone? Thank God for that, I can get out of this fancy dress.
  • Clarissa: My soul is above you, man. Do not urge me to tell you how much I know my soul is above you.
  • Deb: My soul is above you. But my body...
  • Mrs. Sinclair: What on earth took him so long?
  • Mrs. Sinclair: I've never heard such a-doings in all my life. Such a chicken of a gentleman and a tiger of a lady.
  • Mrs. Sinclair: She can use her airs and graces to satisfy some of our young gentlemen.
  • Sally: She's not getting any comfort from me. She's one of us now.
  • Clarissa: Kindness, Bella, would suit you better.
  • Sally: [reading from one of Clarissa's stolen letters] Look carefully to the seals of my letters.
  • Sally: Muslin? I wanted silk, Miss Lyons, with ruffles here and here.
  • Lovelace: No other man will have you now.
  • [showing a letter from Clarissa]
  • Lovelace: Mine, Jack, Mine!
  • [Reading the letter]
  • Belford: Hmm. It's more like a sermon than a billet-doux.
  • Mrs Harlowe: Clarry, a woman must know when to bend or else she will surely break.
  • James: Pinch your cheeks, Bella. Your face must be your fortune now.
  • Anna: How cruel of you to rob Bella of the only lover she ever had.
  • Clarissa: Me? It wasn't me. She refused him.
  • [discussing the possible return of Clarissa]
  • James: No! If she ever enters these doors, I shall leave.
  • Mr Harlowe: Then leave. The child has suffered enough.
  • Clarissa: Was Lovelace here?
  • Belford: He's gone now.
  • Clarissa: Can he never leave me in peace? Will he pursue me to the grave?
  • [Talking about Lovelace]
  • Anna: Don't you like him at all? Not even a teeny bit? He's so handsome.
  • Clarissa: So wild!
  • Anna: So vain!
  • Belford: I know these promising ladies, you see, all sauce and no stuffing. 50 guineas on it she flies the nest.
  • The real Lady Betty: Impersonate me with your strumpets!
  • [after Lovelace has raped Clarissa]
  • Clarissa: What further evils are reserved for me? I find I am your prisoner.
  • Lovelace: I trust you slept well.
  • Clarissa: I did not sleep.
  • Lovelace: Scribbling? Is that wise? Letters can be traced.
  • Clarissa: As you should know.
  • Lovelace: I hope at least you used an alias.
  • Clarissa: I leave all such subterfuge to you.
  • [Grandfather Harlowe has died and left the entire estate and wealth to his younger granddaughter, Clarissa]
  • Bella: Imagine! Leaving all the family paintings to her, just because she used to tickle with him! And wipe and clean with her own dainty fingers.
  • James: [taking Bella's hand] Dainty? Whose fingers could be daintier than these?
  • Bella: He might just as well have left them to the maid.
  • [as Clarissa is dying in prison, her coffin is brought into her cell]
  • Doctor: What shocking sight is this?
  • Clarissa: Why shocking? Are we shocked in church to see the monuments of our ancestors with whom we hope one day to rest in peace?
  • Mrs Howe: Mr Hickman is very patient, but no man will wait forever.
  • Bella: Don't Mr Lovelace say you have fine eyes?
  • Clarissa: Is that what he told you?
  • Lovelace: Oh she may threaten, she may weep, she may rave 'Oh you traitor! Oh you fiend!' but little by little she comes to like her little cage.
  • Lovelace: Well done Jack, you have avenged her well. One man cannot have every woman worth having... Clarissa let this redeem my soul.
  • Anna: Men are all such nasty schoolboys.
