Ann archer and the child actor playing Willie have done an amazing job of portraying beautifully the deep bonds of a mother and child and the tremendous sacrifice made by a loving mother for not further damaging her child yet staying true to her integral self. In fact contrary to an earlier review, she comes across as a self sacrificing mother who puts her child first. It has to be accepted the need for individuals to work is not only the necessity of earning but also to feel fulfilled. And in this movie she is seen to be trying to maintain being a mother and bringing up her child with right values and being consciously try to see that the child is adjusting to the trauma of divorce with least damage. She was the constant for the first two years after the divorce. Amazing movie and looks like it is still the reality.... I would give it 8.

Anne Archer plays a divorced woman who lives in the politically correct world where her son's father exists only as a source of child-support payments. When the father, effectively portrayed by John Heard, tries to live up to his responsibilities as a parent, she reacts with jealousy and fear instead of compromise. The parents inability to communicate with each other like adults leads to a custody hearing, with predictable results. The film tries hard to portray the mother sympathetically, but the selfishness of her actions makes it very hard to empathize with her. Although it is certainly not the message the filmmakers intended, hopefully some parents might watch this movie and realize that their children are more than just extensions of themselves.
