Complete Disaster!

I thought this show was very good. When I saw the first season, I was somewhat iffy about where it was going. The next season they added the beautiful Lauren Velez, and I think it was then that the show took off. I became a New York Undercover addict! I even enjoyed the episodes in which they brought in Detective Macnamara, played by Jonathan LaPaglia. The next thing I know, New York Undercover just went down hill due to the killing off of the characters Torres and Macnamara. I thought for sure that the season after Macnamara was introduced, that it would get better just as the show always seemed to do at the start of every new season. Well, Mr. Wolf handed fans a HUGE disappointment. I agree with the person who stated that this show could have survived at least two or three more seasons had they kept the Eddie Torres character. Dick Wolf should have seen disaster on the rise. Viewers were used to seeing Torres and Williams. You can't kill off one of the lead characters and expect to have a chance at good ratings. Not only did they kill off Torres and Macnamara, but they killed the spirit of the show. Tommy Ford as Lt. Barker looked more like a pimp than a cop. And who were these other rejects? Even Lt. Cooper left the show. I think fans only watched the very FIRST episode of the last season because they wanted to know if in fact Torres' character was really dead. Once they found out, that was it. Dick Wolf has learned his lesson I'm sure. When you've got a good thing, keep it the way it is. Nobody likes drastic changes to something that they're used to. He's learning that with Law & Order.

A great show which will be missed

This was one of those unique shows that should have acquired more praise. While white-dominated cop shows seem to be the norm, this show broke new ground with a diverse cast and minority related issues. Sadly, the whiteness of Hollywood was far too much to overcome in regards to the shelf life of this show. Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo were especially excellent in this series, demonstrating their talent as they were constantly torn between race, culture and the police force. I especially felt the opening montages to the show provided quite a trademark within the series, using no words and only the pulsating beats of contemporary hip-hop and R&B artists to tell the story in a neo-silent film fashion. Whenever I can catch this show at 1 a.m. (and this is only on the weekends), I am rarely disappointed.

This show is amazing

I am currently streaming NYU on Peacock and this show is EXCELLENT. I'm not sure who or why they inexplicably destroyed this show by killing Det. Torres and adding McNamara, and then axing Lt. Cooper. It appears that it intentionally harsh...they way they killed off Torres. I only watched like 2 episodes of season 4., and I guess everybody else agreed that season 4 was awful since there are only 13 episodes 😂. I've read that this show was the number one show in Black & Hispanic households and I believe it! The show had action, strained relationships, a dysfunctional family...it has it all. I don't think a reboot could recapture this magic.

Really loved this show 👍

Great to finally see this on Prime. If they finally reboot this series for streaming or tv it has to be the original main characters, otherwise it simply won't work. Season 4 proved that. Fans aren't going to care about continuity. The cast chemistry made it worthwhile. The stories reflected what still face today in our communities. Lastly, the time period was captured vividly, bringing back memories of New York City I wish still existed.

Fantastic show until season 4

Show ruined in 4th season. Recently watched on Prime and the shows vibe drastically changed direction in the 4th season. I believe this was why in was canceled. Despite the last episode of season 3 being awesome and the first episode of season 4 action packed it lost it's appeal. It was if someone wanted it to be less ethnic and more main stream suburbia. The shows core was rooted in urban music, social economic hurdles, cultural differences, and complex dynamics of relationships encompassing the aforementioned. There are uncomfortable subjects and points of view in the series, but nothing outside the realm of reality. There were plenty of cop shows during that time depicting other ethnic and none ethnic groups. Why mess up a good thing....but the network did and the show never recovered. The show during it's time was a great starting point for exposing up and coming talent to a larger audience. So many actors and actresses show up in the episodes which makes it fun and interesting to watch. In the end, I'd still watch NYU knowing what I know. Kind of like life; you know you're going to get old if you life long enough and you know it'll suck, but you enjoy it as long as you can anyway.

Why aren't main Malik Yoba and Michael Delorenzo listed as main cast members?

I loved this show, but what's going on with the folks at IMDb.com not listing the two main characters on the cast listing on the main page? Well, if they won't I will... Everybody watched the show to see Malik Yoba and and Michael DeLorenzo who played the Black and Puerto Rican detectives. Also, I think Michael Michelle played Malik Yoba's love interest on the show... plus there was a Puerto Rican female detective who was dating Michael Delorenzo's character on the show. That's who people watched for, not the unrecognizable names that is listed under the cast for the show. Also, there were plenty of guest stars that were on the show... I think Mary J. Blige, Tyra Banks, Terrence Howard, Diana Krall as jazz singer... where are those folks listed?

New York Undercover

Real life stories about crime in New York. Casting was good and the writing was good in this tv series. Two TV shows I can think of that are good TV shows this show and The Keenan & Kel Show and I would say both shows were good TV shows.

They don't make them good like this anymore

If you grew up in the 90s or remember anything about 90s television, then shows like "90210","The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" or "Melrose Place" might come to mind. Unfortunately for many avid t.v. watchers, "New York Undercover" might not be one of them. Premiering on Fox 5 in 1994, Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo star as two lead detectives working out of the fourth precinct in Harlem. Together, they tackle all kinds of crime on the cold, mean streets of New York from rape, robbery, drugs, murder, etc. In addition, Nina Moreno played by the beautiful Lauren Velez who joins the cast in season two is wonderful as the tough, yet sympathetic cop. As is Johnathan Lapaglia who also joins the cast in season three. Patti D'arbanville is fantastic as the no nonsense Leutenant Cooper. As you watch each of these characters courageously go out into the wild, gritty streets to fight crime and take down bad guys, you are also getting to know them on a personal level. The myriad of situations they face in their own lives is so intense that you are able to feel how they feel and sympathize with them on many levels. The greatest thing about these characters is that they're so dedicated to their jobs, that they take home all of what they face on a daily basis. They will go through hell and back to protect the inn cent and make the streets of New York that much safer and that is part of what makes these characters so lovable. Aside from the urban New York scenery, the series contains great dialogue, exceptional acting, strong character development, and not to mention, memorable guest stars. Many of the musical guests that appear at the end of the show add to the show's urban setting. Sadly, the series went downhill after the end of season three and by the last episode of season four, the show went off the air. This saddens me for this was such a wonderful show. Although I never watched it as a kid, I had the pleasure of watching it in syndication twenty years later. It is definitely a show that will be missed.

Great show until Season 4

This show wasn't an award winner but it was real and edgy. It had an urban feel which was for rare cop shows during the 90's. The 1st-3rd season was the best but after Torres was killed it just became generic. I'm 28 years old and I watched a couple of episodes when it was on Fox in the mid 90's. I didn't know what I was watching but the episodes were interesting.

I like on Saturday mornings

Yes indeed. I totally enjoyed this series when it originally was on the tv screen. So to see it on a Saturday morning was alright with me. Continue to show on Saturday mornings. Better here than on Fridays with just 2 episodes showing. I am sure there are others who will agree. Seeing some young actors that are still acting today.

The music took me back to a better time and place, when music made you want to get up and shake your groove thing.

Please edit and delete this added paragraph, was just words to get it to submit. Better short than alot of yada yada yada just to get this review to submit.

Best crime drama series show ever made.

When me and my brother and sisters first heard about this tremendous crime drama series, we have been watching this show for many years when it previously aired on TV One, Centric, VH1 and BET. Many episodes have gunfight scenes and duel combat fist fight scenes were very much good and so tremendous! We also enjoyed the episode where two dogs fight each other in front of an audience, before that, the boy was walking his dog in the street sidewalk, ran away after he let go, went downstairs to attack a serial killer man with a knife several times before leaving him dead, and the dog reunite with the pet owner was very good, and the fact that the pit Bull saved that boy's life was very inspiring. The driving shooting scenes and robbery scenes was so awesome! This is way cooler than Law & Order, but of course we are all Law & Order fans because we just chose this way better! This is the best crime drama series ever made!

The Best Police Drama Of The 90's!!

This series was without a doubt, the best police drama made in the 90's. It was action packed, contemporary, well written, cutting edge material. The show evolved around the characters of J.C.Williams & Eddie Torres who were so connected with the gritty streets of N.Y.C., it made them naturals for the undercover work that they were assigned. Lt. Cooper was perfect as the no nonsense commander of the unit who gave them just enough flexibility to get the job done. The story lines read out of the newspaper of the day and every week, they would have whoever was the top current musical artist perform at "Natalie's", so the show stay current with the times.

The show went south when the stars tried to pull a "Friends" and demand higher salaries and wanted their contracts renegotiated. The producers responded by killing off Torres and replacing Cooper. It was a shame, because the show was a hit. After DeLorenzo & D'Arbanville left the show, it only lasted one more season, and it was not as good as the first three seasons. I'm not sure if it is on DVD, but if it is, it's worth the price.

New York Undercover Was Way Ahead Of Its Time

New York Undercover is one of those shows that paved the way for many and I can see where some shows got their inspiration from. For its time it did so much that can't be done today. Due to today's political climate, you won't get a show where the cast is this diverse and there is varying episode plots focused on different issues in society. Also, every episode through Seasons 1-3 featured special musical guests which is the best part of the show. I've watched the Unsung Hollywood episode on New York Undercover and it pretty much summarized what they went through to make this show. It was very successful among minorities, but it didn't catch on too much with the mainstream audience. Being able to do 4 seasons without the support from the mainstream is an amazing accomplishment. I know Season 4 wasn't highly acclaimed as the previous seasons but it's not as bad as people say. The last few episodes of Season 4 get better but there wasn't enough momentum to air the rest of the season due to cancellation. There have been attempts to make a revival of the show but it's best left at what they were able to accomplish. This show is a reminder of what could've been if they supported shows like this as much as they support shows like Friends and Seinfeld. We will never get another show like this and if we ever do, it's because we have gotten past the point of people caring about skin color.

I MISS THIS SHOW........

I miss this show so much! It was great until the crew almost completely changed. As soon as Eddie Torres was killed, the show went down hill.

The music was AMAZING, too! I would give anything to have it all on DVD.

It had a real cool "urban" feel to it, and these guys dealt with some real-life issues in their day-to-day drama. It became personal for them on many episodes.

What a great idea for a show this was!

Farewell NYU!!!!!!!

TORRES (MIKE DELORENZO) MADE THAT SHOW COMPLETE!

Peace

Ah, Dick, we hardly knew ye...

Dick Wolf struck gold in this 90s drama centering around the personal and professional lives of two New York cops. Realistic, gritty, clever, and so hip it was almost ahead of its own time, New York Undercover did for inner city minorities what the Cosby show did for middle class minorities in the 80s and 90s: It depicted strong non-stereotypical characters living through reality.

Guest stars, particularly musical guest stars, were the punch-line to almost every episode; the smooth buttercream frosting on the cake. And Natalie's was the perfect place to showcase all the talent. Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Notorious B.I.G.--on any given night anyone could be at Natalie's--and you sure didn't want to miss it. In fact, the way the characters flocked to Natalie's provided a fun parallel for the way we all flocked each week to the show. Smiles on our faces, ready to be entertained, wondering what was in store tonight. And who could forget Ice T's non-musical stint as the deliciously criminal Danny-Up? I never have, and probably never will, see a television villain more believable and more entertaining than this one, and the story line he brought to the show was a masterpiece.

It was hard to see the show go. Possibly even harder, though, was that last season after Detective Torres was killed off and they tried to revamp the show into something else. New characters, new focuses, a new feel. It had lost its spark, its magic. The lights were dimming, the music had stopped. It was time to go. I like to imagine the season before that as having been the last one. Watching Eddie die, seeing J.C.'s face, knowing what it all meant. Those were the characters we loved and the ones we would miss because we knew them. Dick Wolf, you did something right, and thanks for that. It WAS hard to see the show go. But it's just like leaving the club: it was a wonderful night and you're tired, but that last song is still in your head. And you can't stop singing it.

Am I ever sad

My show is gone to re-runs to never be returned. This was the excitement of television on Thursday nights along with the shows that came on before it. The story lines were believable, the cast really bonded, and the music (the bomb) set the mood. Natalies' became a forefront for artists of all genre to show their stuff. The clothes were hip, the acting was excellent (until season 4, that is) and the blend made you come back for more. USA is threading the re-runs to pieces by chopping off scenes to make the hour. Cheap shots to Femme thing and their so called movies make/made watching the re-runs unbearable. I miss those days when 'Lou' was hollering at anybody who moved, Michael was confused per usual with the girls and Malik and Chantel or Sandy was going head to head about something. Adding Lauren to the cast was sketchy at first and then she worked in very well. As for Lapaglia, well, leave it alone. He tried, he had a job for a minute. The ever increasingly new faces (some came back as other characters) was well played in to work right along the toe-to-toe cast of old. Boy do I miss this show. Boy do I wish I had taped them, I would have something to treasure. Dick Wolf you truly messed up a good thing just for ratings and little black boxes sakes.

The best detective show of all time.

At the beginning it was only detectives JC Williams (Malik Yoba) and Eddie Torres (Michael Delorenzo). In that first season it showed the viewers that it was the first black and hispanic cop show on the history of television. Which also gave the viewers, how we see urban crimes today. The first season played all the latest R&B and urban style of music we listened to. The fashions these cops wore the urban community can relate to and the hip language they spoke. JC Williams played by Malik Yoba was a tough New York cop who had no patients for law-breakers. He is also the father of a ten year old son (G),who he has a hard time raising because of the long hours trying to crack down on a case, and his son becoming an adolescenes. It was difficult for JC because he has a finacee he has to spend quality time with, and had to juggle his personal time around his work hours. As for Eddie Torres played by Michael Delorenzo he had issues of his own like someday owning his father's nightclub (Natalie's)and dealing with his father's drug problem. Their work is overseen by the no nonsense Lt.Virginia Cooper. The second season introduce a new member to the detective duo (Nina Moreno) and she was Eddie Torres partnered while JC was recovering from a near fatal incident. The beginning of that season JC became bitter and more aggressive towards criminals, and his partner (Torres) took notice of that and tries to tell him to lightened up some (due to the fatal homicide of his finacee to which JC felt helpless and knowing the killer is still walking the streets). At the end of the "Brotherhood" episode there was a dramatic seen where Torres and JC fight and Torres letting him know that he is still with him, after JC told him he is still mourning the pain of his murdered fiancee. The second season ended with the new detective Nina Moreno (Laura Velez) as Eddie Torres love interest. By the third season the show became more diverse by adding a third cast member name Tommy Mcnamera (Jonathan Lapglia who is Italian). Mcnamera became Nina's partner till she froze up at gunpoint when a criminal who had Mcnamera's life in his hands. Sadly the third season ended with Torres and Mcnamera being killed off by a couple of bank-robbers. There leaving JC and Moreno transferring to a special unit which the show now suitable to a wall street-like audience. At the end it sucked, but in the beginning the show was interesting.
