The ''Mullet Beach'' setting in Australia is fictional but on the island of St. Maarten there is a place called ''Mullet Bay Beach''.
According to the film's production notes, American actor Elliott Gould read the third draft of the movie's screenplay and contacted Phillip Avalon to say he was interested in playing the part of Mike McCain.
