Percival's "Why have you cut your hair?" to Lady Jean was not in the original script, but was added when Isabella Rossallini, who kept her hair in an iconic short bob for the majority of her career, was chosen for the role. The directors felt an explanation was needed for why a medieval woman would have such short hair, and the implication of the line was that Jean cut her long hair in mourning for her missing husband.
For television broadcasts on the Disney Channel, the second-to-last line of "Never Talk to Strangers" ("But if you never talk to strangers, you might never get to meet") was dubbed over to repeat the line "You should never talk to strangers".
Part of the "Cannon Movie Tales" series, nine feature films based on classic fairy tales that were produced by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus for the Cannon Group in the mid 1980s. All of the films featured well-known actors from the U.S. and U.K. and were shot on-location in Israel. Although the series was originally conceived to have sixteen films, production stopped at nine when Rumpelstiltskin (1987) flopped at the box office, and the remaining films were sent directly to video. Despite their commercial failure, the Movie Tales garnered a cult following after the Disney Channel began airing them as "Storybook Cinema" in 1988. The nine films in the series are: Der Froschkönig (1986), Dornröschen (1987), Des Kaisers neue Kleider (1987), Rumpelstilzchen (1987), Schneewittchen (1987), Die Schöne und das Biest (1987), Hänsel und Gretel (1987), Der gestiefelte Kater (1988), and Rotkäppchen (1987).
