Dona Speir admitted in her autobiography that she was intoxicated for much of the shoot and subsequently embarrassed by her performance. Despite this, she was well liked by Andy Sidaris and his wife, producer Arlene Sidaris, who offered her the opportunity to reprise her role in the sequel, Hawaii Connection (1988). Speir partially attributes this to her decision to get clean, remaining sober for the duration of the shoot and going on to appear in five more Sidaris films. Speir also credits the Sidarises' support with her remaining sober, as they had a driver on stand-by at all times to take her to an AA meeting if she felt she might relapse.
Andy Sidaris funded this movie using profits from his previous movie Malibu Express (1985). He said in an interview that he preferred doing it that way. "I can't go through the regular process. I can't do a script, turn it over to a studio, have a reader read it, and have some kid out of college come to me and say 'That doesn't work for me.' I'm gonna kill the fucker, and I'll be in jail. It serves me well, and is cheaper, to finance my own movies."
First collaboration between writer/director Andy Sidaris and actor Rodrigo Obregón, who would appear in almost every one of Mr. Sidaris' subsequent films.
