8 Comedy Shows To Watch If You Love Young Sheldon
Image
8 Comedy Shows To Watch If You Are A Young Sheldon Fan (Photo Credit – IMDb)

Though several TV series have featured intelligent children, not many have attained the same caliber as Young Sheldon. The show, which debuted in 2017 on CBS, was a prequel to the hugely successful sitcom The Big Bang Theory, focusing on the early years of Sheldon Cooper. It gave fans an explanation for why Sheldon evolved into the character he would play on Tbbt while also battling to maintain his continuity.

When Young Sheldon came to a close, it certainly left a void. However, there are still a lot of family comedy shows that have the same happy-go-lucky atmosphere.

The Paper Review — Domhnall Gleeson Is Tremendous In This Worthwhile Spinoff
Image
The Office (US version) is hands down one of the greatest comedic sitcoms of all time. It’s a show that I have watched well over a dozen times and has become a staple of comfort in the Valero household. In modern society, we have seen shows like Sex & the City, Full House, and Roseanne all on the list of shows that have been brought back with a fresh version of the series. While some have found success, others, like this year’s Suits reboot, Suits LA, were Doa. Enter Greg Daniels and Peacock trying to recapture the magic that Michael Scott provided with a spinoff starring Domhnall Gleeson,...

Dave Ketchum Dies: ‘Get Smart’s Agent 13, Veteran Character Actor & Writer Was 97
Image
Dave Ketchum, who played the exasperated, always-hidden Agent 13 on the beloved 1960s comedy Get Smart, has died. He was 97.

Our sister publication THR reported that Ketchum died August 10, but the family did not provide details.

Born on February 4, 1928, Ketchum toured with Uso and had a local radio show in California before getting his acting start in the early 1960s with guest roles on such TV series as The Jim Backus Show, Angel and The Real McCoys. He then landed a series-regular role on I’m Dickens — He’s Fenster, an ABC sitcom starring Marty Ingels and John Astin. It lasted one season in 1962-63.

Around that time, Ketchum released a comedy album titled The Long Playing Tongue of Dave Ketchum. Despite arriving during the Golden Age of recorded comedy, it failed to chart.

Ketchum continued to do TV guest stints before being cast to lead Camp Runamuck. He played...

David Ketchum, the goofy comic actor and prolific TV writer best known for squeezing into such stuffy spaces as vending machines, trash cans and airport lockers as Agent 13 on the fabled sitcom Get Smart, has died. He was 97.

Ketchum died Aug. 10 in a care facility in Thousand Oaks, California, his daughter Nicole Madden told The Hollywood Reporter.

Ketchum also played carpenter Mel Warshaw opposite John Astin and Marty Ingalls on the 1962-63 ABC sitcom I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster and starred as Counselor Spiffy on the 1965-66 NBC comedy Camp Runamuck.

In notable guest-star turns, he portrayed salesmen selling real estate and petroleum on The Andy Griffith Show in 1967 and was a member of a divorce club that offers great vacation rates on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970.

The Awful '80s Comedy That Keanu Reeves Headlined Before His Rise To Fame
Image
It's easy to look at Keanu Reeves' long career and surmise that the man has been on top for decades. As the star of the "John Wick" films, he cemented his standing as one of the all-time greats of Hollywood and has a long list of equally great movies on his résumé dating all the way back to the 1980s. But like any actor, Reeves has experienced ups and downs, and some of the downs have been pretty abject.

Even prior to his first appearance as the titular assassin in 2014's "John Wick," Reeves was at a real nadir career-wise. His 2010 rom-com "Henry's Crime" failed at the box office, after which Reeves took a short break from acting to produce a documentary before starring in the independent drama "Generation Um..." in 2012. That film currently bears a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn't always the best guide, but in the case of "Generation Um.

Quantum Leap Revival Moves to Netflix: Will It Find New Life?
Image
TV reboots are a natural part of the industry, and they are unlikely to ever fully go away. Classic shows that aired in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s have all cemented a place in Hollywood history, and they continue to influence productions today. Naturally, asstudios search for proven hits, they will look to reboot those classic shows that still have audiences today.

Recent years have seen several '80s shows earn reboots and revivals in the modern day. MacGyver, for instance, first premiered in 1985 and eventually earned a five-season reboot in 2015. Magnum, P.I. premiered in 1980 and was rebooted in 2018 for another five-season run.

Even animated shows have been brought back to life, including DuckTales, ThunderCats, and Voltron. Fuller House came back to life as a full revival of Full House, and The Conners and Roseanne served as sequels to 1988's Roseanne. With revivals still seeing success today, oneunderrated...

An Interior Design Expert Breaks Down Why Sitcom Sets Look Like That
Image
As an expert in interior design — and with a masters in architecture — TikToker Reeves Connelly views TV series like Modern Family and Cheers differently than the rest of us, revealing that there are, in fact, reasons for the design choices on sitcom sets.

To start, those circular kitchen tables aren’t just meant to look quirky. They serve a narrative purpose. “The tables in sitcoms are usually round because it allows the actors to sit in a semi-circle formation so no one has their back to the camera or is blocking another actor from the shot,” he explained in a video from earlier this week.

Superimposing stills from Friends and Disney Channel’s Good Luck Charlie as examples, Connelly described how a kitchen’s layout plays an equally important role. In shows like Full House and That’s So Raven, the kitchen door butts up to another room, providing an easy...

Image
Jurnee Smollett is opening up about her son’s future!

The 38-year-old Smoke actress is a former child star herself. Jurnee got her start in Hollywood on sitcoms like Full House, so she knows what it’s like to grow up in front of the cameras.

Jurnee recently spoke to People about whether or not she wants her 8-year-old son to follow in her footsteps and become an actor himself.

Keep reading to find out more…

According to Jurnee, her son already loves going to work with her and watching the monitor while she films. The actress said that her son, Hunter, is already used to being on set and knows how to be quiet and respectful while the cameras roll.

The Season Premiere of ‘King of the Hill’ Revival Will Disappoint. But the Rest of the Season Certainly Won’t
Image
Unlike Full House (three dads) or Perfect Strangers (wacky foreigner) or Dinosaurs (dinosaurs), King of the Hill has a simple premise — maybe the simplest comedy premise of the past several decades. Hank (voice of series co-creator Mike Judge) and Peggy (Kathy Najimy) raise their son Bobby (Pamela Adlon); Hank’s main social life consists of standing in the alley behind his house drinking beer with his neighbors.

But anyone who knows the show at all knows I left out extremely salient details. Hank clashes with Bobby because Hank is a determinedly “normal” man, and Bobby’s artistic pursuits — comedy, cooking — confuses and alarms his father, eliciting Hank’s refrain, “That boy ain’t right.” Hank’s neighbors include one paranoid conspiracy theorist, and one man whose lazily enunciated accent makes him nearly incomprehensible. Hank doesn’t just drink beer, he drinks Alamo. King of the Hill isn’t just a family sitcom,...

Every Tgif Sitcom Ranked by ‘90s Nostalgia Experts
Image
It’s not too hard to push the nostalgia button for someone who grew up in the ‘90s. All you need to do is mention the Power Rangers or Pearl Jam, and their eyes will light up. The same goes for these four little letters: T-g-i-f. No matter how many mozzarella sticks they scarf down from the other TGIFs, for them, those letters in that order will immediately trigger the sound of Steve. Urkel’s distinct laugh or Michelle Tanner’s “You got it, dude!”

On September 22, 1989, ABC launched a Friday primetime block of shows aimed at revitalizing one of TV’s most difficult nights to program by consolidating two hours of family-oriented comedies. It was called Tgif to trade on the familiarity of the phrase “Thank God it’s Friday,” although officially it stood for “Thank goodness it’s funny” to avoid legal issues with the Tgi Fridays restaurant chain.

‘Full House’ Creator Says This Was One of Sitcom’s Worst Episodes
Image
Apologies to Jeff Franklin, creator of the Tgif sitcom Full House, but the show aired many episodes that could compete for the series’ worst. Maybe that’s why Franklin limited it to Season Three when he picked his “controversial” entry for most horrible episode, that year’s season premiere, “Tanner’s Island.”

The premise is predictably dopey. To celebrate the anniversary of Joey and Jesse moving in with the Tanners (did they have the date written on the calendar?), Danny gifts everyone with a surprise vacation to Hawaii. That’s a helluva present! There are the usual hijinks (Joey wants to hook up with a hula dancer) before their three-hour boat tour goes awry, and the fam finds themselves stranded on a deserted island.

Yeah, it’s Gilligan’s Island, complete with coconuts falling on Joey’s head.

“It had so much potential and cost so much money,” Franklin told...

Jodie Sweetin Talks Past Addiction, Says It’s Hard to ‘Make All Your Mistakes Publicly’

Full House alum Jodie Sweetin has elaborated on her past addiction struggle, saying it was all anyone wanted to talk about after someone sold the story of her being in treatment. The Stephanie Tanner portrayer struggled with addiction in her 20s, as she said in a recent interview on Kail Lowry’s Barely Famous podcast. “And because people know who you are, it never kind of goes away from it being in the public eye,” she explained. “And also, anything that you go through because you’re in the public eye, people just want to pay attention to it, regardless of if it’s something that millions of other people are dealing with.” Despite people assuming Sweetin’s drug and alcohol use was a result of her early fame, the actor said she would have struggled with addiction issues “regardless of being on TV or not.” In the middle-class neighborhood in which Sweetin grew up,...

Joe Epperson, the three-time Emmy-nominated camera operator who had long stints on All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Full House and The Tonight Show, has died. He was 80.

Five Hopelessly Violent Sitcom Babies
Image
Pretty much everything is funnier when a baby does it.

Think about it, when’s the last time you watched a reel of adults just laughing? Or smashing a cake with abandon? Hopefully never, because such things sound obnoxious and cringe when an adult does them. But a baby explaining the plot of Star Wars? Hilarious.

The general hilariousness of babies is also why they’re frequently featured on sitcoms, either as a reliable source of “aw” moments like baby Lily from Modern Family or to deliver snarky, funny lines like Michelle Tanner in Full House (even if she’s unrealistically clever for a toddler).

But there’s yet another infant trope endemic to sitcoms: the violent baby. These babies’ cutesy moments are juxtaposed with acts of terrible violence, making for the very best — and least predictable — type of sitcom babies.

Here are five such babies who deliver laughs by inflicting pain…...

Family Matters And Full House's Crossover Was Sitcom Gold
Image
Crossover events have been a common staple in television for decades, giving viewers an opportunity to witness some of their favorite characters from different shows interacting with each other, often to hilarious effect. You can read /Film's selection of the best crossover episodes here. Usually, crossovers are often a chance for networks to promote brand synergy, and in some cases me be a ploy to get a boost in ratings. However, when handled right, with consistent writing for the characters, they can showcase the best elements of both series' trademarks.

ABC launched its Tgif primetime programming block in 1989, in which family sitcoms would air and lead into the news show "20/20." Two of the most beloved series from that programming block were "Full House" and "Family Matters." The former series first hit the air in 1987, while the latter series premiered in 1989. However, both series would cross paths in 1991 when the...

How Much Does The Home From Full House Cost?
Image
From 1987 to 1995, ABC's family sitcom "Full House" entertained audiences with its exploration into the lives of the Tanner family household led by widower Danny Tanner (Bob Saget). Danny raised his three daughters, D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) with the help of his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis (John Stamos) and best friend Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier) in his titular full house in San Francisco, CA. Throughout the series' eight-year run, the Tanner household grows larger, as does the property value of the house itself.

Over 20 years after the original series' conclusion, Netflix's "Fuller House" caught viewers up with the Tanners' lives in the 21st century, with the now-grown-up widowed mother D.J. raising her three sons with the help of her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber). Premise sure sounds familiar, huh? Well, given the timeless nature of family-related sitcoms,...

Full House Star Candace Cameron Bure Reveals What Made The Sitcom So Successful: "That's What People Related To"
Image
Full Housestar Candace Cameron Bure, who plays D.J. Tanner in the show and the sequel Fuller House, has recently spoken out about the sitcom’s huge success. Every season of Full Housefocuses on the Tanner family: children D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle, their widowed father, Danny, their uncle Jesse, and family friend Joey. Together, the group causes all manner of chaos and hilarity, and their wholesome escapades are the reason Full House is one of the most notable sitcoms of all time.

In a recent episode of the Hey Dude... The 90s Called! podcast (via EW), hosted by Christine Taylor and David Lascher, Cameron Bure acknowledges Full House’s popularity as a sitcom, and what about it made it such a success:

"Aside from it being an unconventional family... like, that's what people related to, having a mom or a dad or grandparents raising them, or aunts or uncles, like,...

“That’s just a portal”: Real Reason Full House Star Candace Cameron Bure Banned Horror Movies in Her Home
Image
Candace Cameron Bure isn’t here for haunted houses, horror flicks, or anything remotely creepy, and she’s got a strong reason why. The Full House and Hallmark Channel star recently opened up on her podcast about why she has a firm “no scary movies” rule inside her home. And no, it’s not just because she doesn’t like jump scares.

For Bure, it’s a spiritual thing. The actress, who’s been vocal about her Christian faith, explained that she believes watching horror movies can open a “portal” to negative or even demonic energy. While her family may poke fun, she’s serious about protecting her home from what she sees as dark energy and bad vibes.

Why Candace Cameron Bure believes horror films open the door to darkness…

Candace Cameron Bure may have grown up on the soundstage, but when it comes to what plays on the screen at home,...

Candace Cameron Bure suggests horror movies are “incredibly demonic” and can open a portal
Heather Langenkamp in Nightmare - Mörderische Träume (1984)
We all had those scary moments when we were kids. Whether it was the monster under the bed or the fact that we just watched A Nightmare on Elm Street so of course we were next on Freddy Krueger’s list. But that tends to fade away with maturity and plain logic. But for actress Candace Cameron Bure, even dabbling in horror movies will unleash sheer hell into your house, full or not.

Candace Cameron Bure recently said on her namesake podcast (via THR) that she takes the duty of protecting her family to the extreme. Case in point: the portal. Ok, so what constitutes a “portal” exactly? “Like if you’re watching this, or you’re playing this video game, or whatever, that’s a portal that could let stuff inside our home. I don’t even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV,...

How One Writer Hopes to Make Her Script the ‘Easiest Sell’ With a Y2K Nostalgia-Filled Table Read
Image
All her career, screenwriter Victoria Male has heard that having a great script was the most important thing she could do to give her work the best shot at getting made. That advice shifted in the midst of the pandemic and the strikes, with studios no longer willing to take bets on just any script.

“There’s … a lot of risk aversion, a lot of fear,” Male told TheWrap, pointing to words of a friend who works as a senior development executive at a U.K. production. “Now people aren’t trying to find the script that they can fight for and that will make their career — they’re just trying not to get fired.”

With a finger on the pulse of the industry, Male decided to take the odds for her feature script — a Y2K nostalgia-filled project titled “Whatever Happened to Baby J” — into her own hands by...

Candace Cameron Bure Believes Watching Scary Movies on TV Can Be 'Portal' to Something 'Demonic'
Image
Candace Cameron Bure is explaining why scary movies are banned from her house.

During a recent episode of her The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast, the 49-year-old Full House actress explained that her family will sometimes “make fun of her” whenever she talks about “spiritual things” happening in their home.

In one example, Candace said her husband Valeri Bure and their kids start “rolling their eyes” at her because she believes the TV can be a “portal” to something “demonic.”

Keep reading to find out more…“Like if you’re watching this, or you’re playing this video game, or whatever, that’s a portal that could let stuff inside our home,” Candace explained. “I don’t even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that’s just a portal.”

Candace Cameron Bure Does Not Watch Horror Movies Because She Believes They Open a Demonic ‘Portal’
Image
Former “Full House” star Candace Cameron Bure has revealed that she does not watch horror movies because she feels like they expose her, her family and her home to something “demonic.”

The actress revealed as much during this week’s episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast,” aptly titled, “Is Watching a Scary Movie Bad for Me or is That Just Fear Talking?” Joined by her son, Lev, and Pastor Jonathan Pokluda, Bure explained why she does not like to have horror movies playing in her home.

“You’re opening up a portal. Like, if you’re watching this, or you’re playing this video game, or whatever, that’s a portal that could let stuff inside our home,” she said. “I don’t even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that’s just a portal.”

Scary Movies Are Portals for Demonic Energy, According to Candace Cameron Bure
Image
I completely understand when someone says they don’t enjoy horror movies. I do, but I’m also fully aware that for plenty of people, seeing a monster cleave somebody in twain doesn’t lead to a dopamine release. If someone’s not a fan, that’s their wave, and I’m not going to act like it’s unusual. What am I going to do, call them a ‘fraidy-cat? I’m 34. I don’t have enough cartilage left in my joints to use phrases like that.

Unlike other genres, the only reasoning you really ever need to give for not liking scary movies is, well, that they scare you and you don’t like it. Which is why it’s such a strange, unforced error for the actor Candace Cameron Bure to feel the need to bring borderline psychosis into the discussion of why they’re not screening in her home.

Do not put a scary movie on the TV at Candace Cameron Bure’s house.

On a recent episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast,” the “Full House” star explained that her family will sometimes “make fun of her” whenever she talks about “spiritual things” happening in her home. One topic that makes her husband and kids start “rolling their eyes” is the TV, or as Bure calls it, “the portal.”

“Like if you’re watching this, or you’re playing this video game, or whatever, that’s a portal that could let stuff inside our home,” Bure said. “I don’t even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that’s just a portal.”

Five Ill-Conceived Sitcom Crossovers
Image
Long before Marvel was crossing over the superheroes in their films at every chance, prime-time sitcoms figured out that people love to see a character from one show appear in another. Or, at least, people like the idea of it. While some crossovers come off like Thor and Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok — an epic team-up with hilarious moments — others are more like Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy in Thor: Love and Thunder — a disappointing mess that fails to deliver on its potential.

Superheroes aside, here are the five most ill-conceived sitcom crossovers of all time…

5 ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Futurama’

The very idea of Homer Simpson sharing a few cans of Duff with Bender is inspired. Unfortunately, the Simpsons episode “Simpsorama,” which crossed over with Futurama, failed to deliver at every turn. The episode checks all the boxes for what you’d want to see these characters do together...

'He Was So Proud': Full House's Andrea Barber Recalls Bob Saget's Reaction to Surprising Fan Encounter
Image
Full Housewas so beloved that the sitcom, which ran for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995, spawned a spinoff in Netflix’s Fuller House. The latter ran for an additional five seasons and brought back nearly all the original cast, including Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber, who now host a rewatch podcast called How Rude, Tanneritos!.

Sweetin played middle daughter Stephanie Tanner in Full House, while Barber was the annoying neighbor, Kimmy Gibbler, who was also best friends with Candace Cameron Bure’s D.J. Tanner. While some would argue that the younger actors were the stars of the show, particularly Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's Michelle and siblings, the series was led by the likes of John Stamos, Dave Coulier, and the late Bob Saget. Saget passed away in 2022 at the age of 65.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Barber, in a recent podcast episode, talked about the time that her star power as Kimmy...

Peter Kwong of Big Trouble in Little China and The Golden Child has passed away at age 73
John Carpenter
We’re big fans of director John Carpenter’s 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China here on JoBlo. We’ve sung its praises with a Revisited video, named it the greatest cult film of all time, and dug into the film’s three best scenes… so we’re very sad to hear that actor Peter Kwong, who played the super-powered martial artist Rain in the Carpenter film, has passed away at the age of 73. According to Variety‘s report, Kwong died in his sleep Tuesday night.

Kwong is best remembered for playing Rain, but that was just one of almost 90 screen acting credits he racked up over the course of a career that stretched back nearly fifty years. Hailing from Sacramento, California, Kwong got his acting career started with an appearance on a 1976 episode of the TV series Visions. Among his many other credits are roles in the films Straight Time,...

Five Raunchy Comedians Who Cleaned Up Their Acts for TV
Image
Nowadays, with outlets like Netflix, Hulu and whatever HBO is called this week, comedians who tell dirty jokes can do the exact same thing on sitcoms or animated shows. But before the arrival of streaming and premium cable, a stand-up comic who predominantly worked blue had no place on TV. That is, unless they could play by network TV’s rules, which was no sure thing. The Richard Pryor Show, for example, lasted just four episodes.

There were, however, some comedians who managed to hold off on the f-bombs and make a killing on TV. Here are five of them…

1 Bob Saget Play

Who would have thought that the guy who joked about his mom being a sex worker and his wife being a seven-year-old girl would become one of the sweetest dads in TV history? Saget first shocked audiences with his wildly raunchy stand-up act, and then again by...

'I Would Watch This Show': Full House Stars Pitch 'Golden Girls-esque' Sequel Series
Image
After the original Full House series, the cast reunited for the sequel series, Fuller House. Two of the stars of both shows remain open to coming back for a third show, though fans shouldn't expect to see it happen anytime soon.

These days, series stars Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie Tanner) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler) have been co-hosting How Rude, Tanneritos!, a rewatch podcast for the show. The two recently discussed the possibility of doing a third Full House series on their podcast, and Barber hinted that she'd "never say never" to another return as Kimmy. Sweetin concurred, but her idea is to make the next show feel more like The Golden Girls by picking up with Kimmy and the Tanner women during their golden years. That also means that she wants 15 years or so before pursuing the idea.

"We need some more time. It's too soon," Sweetin said on the...

Full House Feud? Jodie Sweetin Gets Candid About Candace Cameron Bure
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

For many years as co-stars on Full House, Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure literally saw eye-to-eye.

But when it comes to certain cultural topics facing society, most notably ongoing LGBTQ+ issues and debates, the actresses most certainly are Not on the same page.

Bure, for her part, has been labeled a very rude celebrity.

She’s also made it clear she’s against gay marriage.

Simply put, Sweetin does Not share these views.

But does that mean she hates Bure? That the two are openly feuding? Not talking?

‘Full House’ Child Actors Fielded ‘Gross’ Questions About Uncle Jesse From Adult Interviewers
Image
Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, there’s a grown-ass adult asking a child if they find Uncle Jesse sexy.

There’s no questioning the fact that, out of all of the hotties and heartthrobs of 1990s television, John Stamos was in the upper echelon of family-friendliness during his time on the hit sitcom Full House. Playing the musically inclined, Elvis-obsessed, avuncular hunk Uncle Jesse, Stamos became one of those rare sex symbols who managed to maintain that perfect G-rating throughout his historic run as the subject of so many comedy lovers’ not-so-g-rated fantasies, in no small part because Uncle Jesse was so good with the girls — but not too good, not in a weird way that would give the Tanners and their friends uncomfortable ideas.

While Stamos may have been the most desired man on television to so many grown adult women and men when Full House was on the air,...
