One night on Independence Day in 1978, 12-year old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) goes to pick up his little brat brother Jeff (Albie Whitaker) from his friends house which David walks alone through the woods. After Jeff startles David by jumping out of a bush and runs off leaving David alone, David falls into a ravine and is knocked unconscious. David wakes up, but David is horrified to find that 8 years have passed and he hasn't aged and he mysteriously vanished. David gets brought to NASA and NASA scientist Dr. Faraday (Howard Hesseman) suspects David's mysterious disappearance and why he hasn't aged 8 years could be linked to a extra terrestrial spacecraft NASA has captured. But, the NASA scientists cannot enter the spacecraft and they think David could be the one who can open the spaceship and allow them to go aboard. Tested by the NASA scientists, David's brain is connected to a computer in an attempt to help David remember what happened that night and David's brain begins downloading and displaying on the computer monitors a star chart revealing the location of the spacecraft's distant planet of origin Phalon. The following day, David sneaks out of his room and enters the extra terrestrial spacecraft and David meets the ship's sentient computer Max (Voice of Paul Reubens). David discovers Max abducted him and that the spacecraft has time travel abilities, but Max did not return back him to his own time and accidentally dropped him off in 1986 and crashed the ship. After scanning David's brain for the star chart so the ship can return home, David pilots the spacecraft out of NASA and escapes. Instead of traveling to Phalon, David decides to travel home to his family and is not aware NASA is tracking him and believing David is coming home, Dr. Faraday confines David's family to their house and sets out to intercept the spacecraft.
