Tom Cruise originally agreed to provide the voice for Captain Planet. He recorded 6 episodes then backed out for unknown reasons. When David Coburn was recast as Captain Planet, he re-recorded Tom Cruise's episodes.
Each Planeteer comes from a different continent, subtly hinting at the need for people of all nations to work together to care for the planet. Australia and Antarctica are the only continents from which there is not a Planeteer with a ring granting a specific power, and Antarctica has no permanent inhabitants, and therefore no one to give a ring.
Martin Sheen admits to being astonished, and at the same time amused, whenever fans recognize him as the voice of evildoer "Sly Sludge".
Production of this show began prior to the fall of the Soviet Union. In the opening credits to the first several episodes, it is stated that Linka is from the Soviet Union. Later, the opening sequence was dubbed over to say "Eastern Europe" to stay as politically correct as possible.
