My review was written in April 1989 after watching the movie on Forum video cassette.
Despite the exotic locale in India, "Bloodstone" is a pedestrian, uninvolving adventure pic that's understandably been released direct-to-video in the U. S. Pic was filmed prior to director Dwight Little's successful "Halloween 4". Stilted screenplay by Curt Allen and producer Nico Mastorakis concerns a huge, cursed ruby that's stolen by Jack Kehler for baddie Christopher Neame.
Brett Stimely is an ex-cop on his honeymoon with Anna Nicholas, a textile heiress, who becomes involved inthe chasing around action when Kehler secrets the stolen gem in Anna's tennis bag. Protagonists and their problems are dwarfed by scenic, remote locations including an impressive climax on a footbridge across roaring rapids.
Hero Stimely is stymied by dubbing of his dialog while co-star Nicholas looks nice but makes little impression in a stock role. Ditto transparent bad guy Neame, while the decision to cast Charlie Brill as the stumbling Indian police inspector is completely out-of-date and destroys credibility.
Tech credits are okay.

Sorry for the pun, but its true that Bloodstone is one of those forgotten films of the 80's. Most people who saw it in the theater then have forgotten they did and the movie disappeared from theaters never to be heard from again, that is until now. I, for one, was one of the people that forgot about this film. For years my memory of the film layed dormat, then one day I saw it on the shelf at one of our local DVD store. I was totally surprised to see it, so I picked it up. This DVD release by Image/Omega Entertainent is a beautiful release. Widescreen, digitally remastered, with plenty of special features. I was impressed. As for the movie, it brought back great memories. The story is your average adventure affair, much like Indiana Jones, Romancing The Stone, & Firewalker, but it does have many comical moments. The best part of the film is the police chief that speaks with a funny back of the throat voice. I found myself mimicking this voice for days after I saw the movie. The film was a pleasure with its adventure, off-the-wall humor, and exotic locations. If you like adventure films, give this lost gem a try, you shouldn't be disappointed. And for those of you who saw the movie, and can't remember...refresh your memory.
Bloodstone is an action-adventure film directed by Dwight H. Little. The film stars Brett Stimely, Rajinikanth, Anna Nicholas, Charlie Brill and Christopher Neame.
A small-time thief slips a priceless jewel into the bag of American newlyweds travelling to India. The couple and their streetwise cabbie are followed by some thugs, who then abduct the wife.
The only reason to watch this film is probably Rajnikant who is considered as one of the biggest superstar in the South Indian film industry. Watching him acting in the western film is a superb feeling. The film has an average plot a predictable and stereotyped execution and equally predictable climax.
Acting in the film is decent and apart from Rajnikant who was as impressive as always is probably the main highlight of the film.
The only reason I found to watch this stereotyped predictable film is Rajnikant.

Blood stone is one of the most awful English films to have been released. The trailer was featured for many months in theatres since it was rajni's 1st English film.
It was distributed & released with great fanfare by noted film director T.Rajendar. The film however bombed badly. It ran for hardly 2 weeks.
The reason is simple - amateurish plot, weak narration & poor performances. The hero is Sylvester Stallone's brother & his sidekick is rajini. The film was shot in India & featured many Indian junior artists.
Please do not waste time/money watching it - even on DVD.

Saw this movie when i was about 8, at the time it felt like a Grade A movie but refreshing my memory now it's a C Class movie at it's best!.. although RAJINI was amazing in it the movie had a childish treasure hunt story line able to be thought up at a coffee break. Even at that time coping with the horrible acting of the "Americans"(namely Brett Stimely and Anna Nicholas the main cast) Rajini still stood out and gave the movie a comical twist despite his co-stars in bloodstone. overall the story, the acting( except Rajini(I'm a fan thus there's a possible bias)), casting was just horrible. Would recommend for a Rajini fan but not for a movie fan.

- WissenswertesBecause his English did not turn out to be clear enough, Rajnikanth ended up re-looping his own dialogue with the help of a dialogue coach.

Sandy McVey: Are you saying you've been on the wrong side of the law?
Shyam Sabu: Mr. McVey, the law has been on the wrong side of me.
