Any self-respecting fan of the Hallmark Channel’s many romance movies should be familiar with actor Andrew Walker. Perhaps you saw him woo a movie starlet in Date With Love. Or maybe he warmed your heart in Love on Ice. Or you were swept away by him in Bridal Wave. Or you watched him find A Bride for Christmas. Needless to say, Walker has starred in a lot of romantic tales for the network. But this December, you’ll have to tune into a different channel to watch the Hallmark mainstay’s latest love story.

Michael Haneke received worldwide acclaim and two Oscar nominations for his tragic romance “Amour,” the mesmerizing tale of an elderly couple facing the inevitable specter of death. Though downbeat in the Haneke fashion, “Amour” also registered as the Austrian filmmaker’s most emotionally accessible work. His followup, “Happy End,” found a more mixed response — and yet, for serious Haneke devotees, it should hit all the right buttons. Still, Haneke remains such a singular director that, 30 years into his career, he continues to challenge even his greatest devotees.
For those among us, “Happy End” delivers one of the most enjoyably twisted movies of Haneke’s career. The story of a dysfunctional bourgeois family where self-loathing and suicidal thoughts loom large, it’s a profoundly cynical work so incisive that it renewed a once-familiar element in Haneke’s career trajectory: divisiveness. Following the filmmaker’s back-to-back Palme d’Or wins for “Amour” and “The White Ribbon,...

Lea Michele has certainly had a busy year.
The actress and singer, 31, released her second studio album Places, went on a full U.S. tour and shot an entire season of her new TV show The Mayor. She also found love with her longtime friend and Ayr clothing company president Zandy Reich.
So when does the Glee alum get to stop and take a breath? Michele tells People exclusively she’s able to “reset” when she can “step outside” of it all.

Early reviews are in, and the consensus seems to be that The Punisher, Marvel’s latest Netflix series, is doing more things right than not. Another way to put that would be, “Oh, phew, this is nothing like Iron Fist.” (Sorry, Danny—you were better in The Defenders, but your solo series is still the low-tide mark of…

To attempt the simplest possible synopsis of Amit Dutta’s new film The Unknown Craftsman, let’s call it a rumination on first principles for spirit-attuned architecture. Fair enough, also, to say it enlarges the scope of Dutta’s work, if we allow the even more simplifying synopses of his previous features, 2010’s Nainsukh and 2013’s The Seventh Walk, as experimental biopics of Indian painters—famed practitioners, respectively, of 18th-century figuration and contemporary abstraction. Of course this all is grossly reductive, but it gets us closer to the big picture of Dutta’s specialty, the art of creative deliberation. Having surveyed the alluring series of Dutta films on view at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley last month, let’s also go ahead and describe the lot of them as dreamlike—not in the red-flag sense of willful inscrutability, but rather for their affinity with the concentrated ambiance of subconscious thought.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Winston Churchill film Darkest Hour and it makes sure to point out that the story will include Churchill's involvement with Dunkirk. As you know, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk was a big hit, and this film will partly tell a different point of view of that story. Another way the marketing team tries to give this film a connection to Nolan's film is with the music. The trailer features the same type of intense clicking sounds that we heard in the Dunkirk trailers.
Churchill is played by Gary Oldman in the Joe Wright-directed film and it looks like he gives one hell of a great performance! There's a good chance that he'll end up getting an Oscar nomination for this.

How does Demi Lovato work out? With a well-prepped gym bag and whole lot of confidence. The 24-year-old singer opened up to Self about what that looks like. She told the magazine in a recent video, "I've run into guys that I've liked at the gym, and it doesn't matter if I'm sweaty or not," she said. "They'll like me for who I am, and if not then they can suck it." And considering she has a new single out called "Sorry Not Sorry," this awesome attitude makes sense. Demi wants people to relate to her tunes emotionally. They may not necessarily be workout songs, but she writes them to get out of her own head. Another way she's been taking...

Sometimes, when you’re documenting history, you still have to make your own moments.

Some of the most satisfying moments in the new HBO docuseries, “The Defiant Ones” — an expansive, four-part history of the last four decades of popular music, premiering Sunday night on HBO — are candid ones. Interview subjects occasionally tinker away on a keyboard or wander around a living room. Stevie Nicks plunks out a tune on a baby grand. Eminem strolls right onto set and starts dishing. As Hughes described in a recent interview with IndieWire, those moments were part of the plan from the beginning.

Adam West, the actor best known for his role as Batman in the 1960s television series, has died at the age of 88 from a battle with leukemia late on Friday night. West's family shared a statement with Variety to confirm the news. The family offered this to fans.
"Our dad always saw himself as the Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans' lives. He was and will always be our hero."
For many, Adam West was their introduction to the world of Batman, and for some, he was the only Batman that mattered. One of West's many talents as an actor was not taking himself too seriously. He could keep a straight face through the most absurd moments, while keeping the fun going on the campy 60's television show. He could surf with the joker, dance with Catwoman while doing the "Batusi," campaigning for mayor of Gotham alongside the Penguin,...

Box OfficeNot everyone needs to jump into a blockbuster.
You could say that Free Fire is a box office flop, but I wouldn’t. The first Ben Wheatley movie to hit American suburbs in its opening weekend is an achievement of exposure in spite of what it actually grossed. Sure, its estimated $1m debut is only a third of what Variety claimed it was on track to make, and for a movie reportedly budgeted somewhere between $7m and $10m, that’s a low start. Its per-screen average is not even in the four digits. But, hey, it’s Wheatley’s biggest opening yet, and that’s the right track.
At a time when many decent smalltime filmmakers are being snatched up for ginormous projects immediately after receiving some indie-sized acclaim, it’s great to see guys like Wheatley and Nacho Vigalondo take gradual steps upward. Vigalondo’s latest, the $15m-budgeted monster movie Colossal has also grossed just...

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, with the release of T2 Trainspotting, we’re looking at the trademark style and calling signs of Danny Boyle as director.
After almost deciding to become a priest early in his teens, Boyle instead found something else that sparked his interest; drama. He studied English and drama in college, and upon graduating worked for several theatre companies. Eventually, he began to direct productions, something he still does to this day between film projects. Ben Wheatley has been one of my favorite indie filmmakers over the last few years, with his consistently stellar and thought-provoking work on projects like Kill List, A Field in England, High-Rise, his contribution to The ABCs of Death anthology, as well as Sightseers, his dark comedy that’s one of my very favorite movies from the last five years. So from the get-go, once I heard about Free Fire, and the talent that Wheatley would be working with on his explosive actioner, I was admittedly 110% on board, sight unseen.
And, thankfully, Wheatley’s satirical send-up of society’s obsession with guns lived up to my lofty expectations (and then some), as he takes the one of the things we love most about action movies—the shootout scene—and stretches it into a hilariously violent character piece that’s as relentlessly paced as it is relentlessly funny.

For Kirstie Alley, the holidays used to be synonymous with overindulging — but this year she didn’t fall back into old habits.

Emma Stone's favorite place for sushi in Los Angeles is a no-frills spot in a Sunset Boulevard strip mall, tucked alongside a laser hair-removal clinic and a FedEx store. It's here, having barely taken a seat, that she starts telling me about her hiatal hernia. "I can't have spicy foods," Stone says. The issue, it turns out, is that part of her stomach protrudes "into my esophagus," which sounds gnarly but is actually pretty manageable, increased chances of acid reflux notwithstanding. "I was born with it," Stone notes cheerfully.

If you’ve had enough of the “ugly sweater” themed holiday party and are looking for something a bit more sophisticated to wear this season, Today contributor and founder of TheLVGuide.com, Lilliana Vasquez, has some pro advice.
“I am a fan of sparkle like nobody’s business,” she tells People at the Dress for Success, ‘Women Helping Women’ breakfast in New York City on Wednesday – but for the holiday season she says to “skip the sequins and go for a beautiful embroidery,” adding, “there are so many ways to incorporate sparkle and shine in a really sophisticated way that...

Bethenny Frankel is opening up about life after divorce and the lessons other women can learn from her own contentious split.
The Real Housewives of New York star sat down with Et's Jennifer Peros at her New York City apartment on Tuesday to discuss B Strong -- a crisis intervention initiative for women she has launched in partnership with the international non-profit, Dress For Success -- but she also dished on moving forward after her tumultuous divorce from ex-husband Jason Hoppy.
"The situation that I've been in and continue to be in is really challenging and it was unexpected," Frankel admitted. However, her own emotional struggle is allowing her to expose a truth about gender relations in this age.
"I think that society is confused by women in power and with money, and I think that men have to get used to that," she said. "I think that it's empowering to be self-sufficient. I think that...

There was no new episode of Empire just before Thanksgiving, but needless to say, the show keeps giving me a lot for which to be thankful.
Cookie's colorful, curve-hugging wardrobe, Hakeem's absurdly immature life choices, Lucious' almost comical ruthlessness, Angelo's existence: for these and so many more things, I am thankful.
Yes, Empire continues to deliver drama as delicious and decadent as your grandma's pecan pie, and Empire Season 3 Episode 7 was a prime example of it at it's best. Why was it so good? Even more than Empire normally does, "What We May Be" focused on family.
The effect one's family has on one's identity – for better or for worse – loomed large, from Cookie being forced to face her painful memories of her father, to Shyne insisting that Nessa is far more at home in their old neighborhood than with Andre, to Freda Gatz putting her beef with the Lyon...

Michelle Obama has the best chance among Democrats to win the 2020 presidential election, according to gambling site Bovada. The current First Lady is listed at 12/1 to win, but three Republicans are ahead of her. They include President-elect Donald Trump, the favorite at 2/1, but also Vice President-elect Mike Pence and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who both have 10-to-1 odds. Another way to read that: Bovada thinks its more likely that Pence or Ryan will run as the Republican nominee and win than that Michelle Obama will take the office. The odds don’t go into detail about why Trump wouldn’t seek re-election.

At the “Adam Ruins Everything Election Special” taping earlier this month in Los Angeles, even the warmup jokes had their eyes on politics. As standup comedian Jared Logan primed both the audience and the sound technicians for the ensuing show, he invited the audience to test laugh: “Imagine if Tim Kaine just told a joke.”
After 19 episodes of the truTV show already under their belts, Tuesday night’s special represents the most ambitious “Adam Ruins Everything” project yet: an hour-long examination (and in most cases, refutation) of some of the most commonly held refrains of this election cycle.

We chat to Edward Zwick, director of Jack Reacher 2, about modern cinema, the erosion of mid-budget cinema and more...
Tom Cruise returns this week as Jack Reacher, the ex-military badass from Lee Child’s popular series of novels. The first Jack Reacher was a great throwback to classic 90s action movies, that felt like a return to an era before superheroes and CGI overloads dominated blockbusters, and Tom Cruise running away from things and punching people was all we needed. And the sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back thankfully keeps that tradition.
Stepping into the director’s chair this time is Ed Zwick (replacing Christopher McQuarrie, who moved over to the Mission Impossible franchise). Zwick is the sort of Hollywood journeyman who’s name on a film is alway a good sign. He’s made movies like Courage Under Fire, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond,...

Laura Poitras isn’t waiting for traditional media to tell the stories that will change the world. One year after co-founding Field of Vision, the visual journalism unit of First Look Media, Poitras and co-founders Aj Schnack and Charlotte Cook are doubling down on their efforts to commission original works of nonfiction that address global events.

While Poitras will be leaving The Intercept, the journalism outfit co-founded by Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill, to focus on expanding Field of Vision, her day-to-day work of commissioning films and short form work will not change, and the two organizations will continue their collaboration on nonfiction storytelling. Truth be told, I had approximately zero experience with the Legend of Heroes franchise prior to being assigned The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II. I’m not even particularly familiar with the output of developer Nihon Falcom, outside the Ys franchise, and that I think I owned Faxanadu at some point. Normally, this is the type of assignment I would gracefully decline, but I decided to stick around this time. The Jrpg franchise comes highly recommended, including from our own Jowi Meli, and lack of familiarity shouldn’t automatically rule me out of reviewing something.
Thankfully, for newcomers such as myself, Nihon Falcom included an overview of the first Trails of Cold Steel, so I at least had a broad idea of the plot. Trails of Cold Steel II picks up shortly after the events of the previous entry, with Rean Schwarzer awakening up from a month long coma.

Monsters, journeys across stormy seas, and a quest for a storied suit of armor make stop-motion pic Kubo and the Two Strings an action-adventure — but at the heart of this samurai epic is the moving and intimate tale of a family. In a fantastical world inspired by ancient Japan, young Kubo cares for his sick mother on the outskirts of their village, where he entertains villagers with his magically-moving origami shows. Then one day, he’s whisked off on a quest to find the magical armor that belonged to his late father, a great samurai warrior. “Kubo is basically a proxy for me,” director Travis Knight told press visiting Laika, the animation studio behind Kubo and Coraline, in June. “He’s a storyteller, he’s an animator, really, when you think about it.” Another way Kubo channels the director: his connection to his mother. “When I was a kid, my...

In my most recent post to this column (of Francois Truffaut’s Stolen Kisses), I mentioned that I would skip the next film on my chronological list, Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell, because I had already podcasted about it not that long ago. But I changed my mind. That decision was partially driven by a mistaken assumption on my part that the next title on my list, namely Orson Welles’ The Immortal Story, was about to get a new release from Criterion the following Tuesday. Actually, that disc won’t hit the market for another couple of weeks, not until August 30, which is too long for me to just let this column sit idle. The reason that I thought that The Immortal Story‘s Blu-ray debut was imminent was because I’ve seen pictures of review copies in circulation and Criterion started yapping about Orson Welles in The Current earlier this month,...

A fast and fervorous guide beyond the basics.
Justin Lin, like his old UCLA classmate Joe Russo, is a member of the modern generation of Hollywood directors who make us really enjoy franchise filmmaking. Enough to get excited for the Fast and Furious movies after they’d seemed driven into a dead end and now to find a new hope in Star Trek with his satisfying takeover of that series. He soon may have us even caring about Space Jam.
The Taiwan-born Lin has also been an important voice for Asian-American representation, both on screen and off. He broke out with a great indie, Better Luck Tomorrow, and went on to become a valuable asset as a studio player, for both the industry and the fans. We honor his talent and his output below by sharing advice and guidance gleaned from statements he’s made through his career.

As a wise woman once said: "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." What holds true in HBO's hit fantasy series also resonates in Washington D.C. politics, of course, where the field of contenders has narrowed from a ridiculous many to a powerful few. And like the drama's many battles for the Iron Throne, election year campaigning can be a real bastard. The possibility of contested tickets mean the Democratic and Republican conventions run the risk of getting nasty,...

Every E3 is filled with surprises of all sorts. Sometimes a game shows up that you didn’t expect. Or perhaps a game is detailed in a way you didn’t expect (coming out soon, or has added features for example). Another way surprises shock fans at E3 is by simply being that, a surprise. This E3 was no different and we got a few surprises that came out of nowhere that shocked quite a lot of fans.

I didn’t catch wind of Quake appearing at E3 until it was just about to begin, then bam Quake appears. Bethesda showed off a quick teaser and that was about it. However the teaser had other teasers in it with hints of Wolfenstein making a return.
This announcement would have gone higher up on my list if we had any content to go with it.

As concern over the spread of the Zika virus in the United States grows, scientists are now warning of the possibility the virus may be transmitted not only by vaginal sex, but also by oral sex and even kissing. The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a study Thursday that "support the hypothesis of sexual transmission (either oral or vaginal) of Zikv." "We cannot rule out the possibility that transmission occurred not through semen but through other biologic fluids, such as pre-ejaculate secretions or saliva exchanged through deep kissing," the scientists concluded. With public health officials warning that mosquitos carrying the Zika virus could infect Americans as early as next month, preventing mosquito bites at home should be at the top of every summer to-do list. So how can you protect yourself and your family? According to new research from Consumer Reports, most "natural" bug sprays won't effectively ward off the mosquitos that carry the virus known to cause birth defects. Although products derived from oils might smell better, they don’t last nearly as long as synthetic chemical-based repellants like picaridin and Deet. Update: J.J. Abrams has since gone on to clarify the statement he made to EW, saying:
“What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.”
This can be interpreted in a couple ways. In one instance, what he seems to be saying is that Rey hasn't met them yet. So perhaps it is someone we have seen, but it's not someone Rey has met. Another way to view it is that the character didn't show up in the film at all. Either way, this seems to rule out Han, Luke, and Leia as potential parents.
