New UCLA Theater, Film and Television Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu Faces Challenges Head-On: ‘When More Diverse Voices Are Represented, the Greater the Art.’
Image
The new dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, Celine Parreñas Shimizu, faces a lot of questions and a rough time for universities across the U.S.

The rise of AI, budget cuts at schools, a hostile presidential administration and retrenchment across the entertainment industry make this a precarious time for educators.

“It’s an unfortunate time in history when higher education is experiencing being at the crosshairs of attacks and the undermining of our mission. To me, there is no greater place on Earth than the classroom. It is where we create powerfully critical and analytic citizenry, as well as where our students not just find their voice and their vision, but they learn that they are not alone in the human enterprise of asking questions and figuring out what their contributions are,” she says with the passion of a zealot who’s well-equipped for challenges and change.

Why Henry Winkler Turned Down John Travolta's Grease Role
Image
Many actors have a sliding doors moment in their career when they pass up a choice role in a soon-to-be iconic movie. For some, it isn't a huge deal. Denzel Washington, for example, already had two Oscar nominations and one win under his belt by the time he decided he didn't want to star in David Fincher's "Se7en." Sure, he later came to regret turning away one of the defining films of the '90s, but he was already an established star and would be just fine without it. That isn't always the case when an actor hasn't quite built up the body of work to go around rejecting great parts –- just take Henry Winkler and Danny Zuko in "Grease."

Winkler was virtual unknown when he won the chance to play Fonzie on "Happy Days." Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli started out as a minor supporting character but quickly...

Tony Roberts, versatile actor and longtime Woody Allen sidekick, dies aged 85
Tony Roberts
Roberts had a long career on Broadway and in movies, and is most fondly remembered for playing Allen’s best friend in a string of successful films

Roberts had a genial stage personality perfect for musical comedy and he originated roles in such diverse Broadway musicals as How Now, Dow Jones (1967); Sugar (1972), an adaptation of the movie Some Like It Hot; and Victor/Victoria (1995), in which he co-starred with Julie Andrews when she returned to Broadway in the stage version of her popular film. Review: David Fincher’s Serial Killer Thriller ‘Se7en’ on Warner Home Video 4K Uhd
Image
By 1995, David Fincher was an acclaimed music video director whose studio-micromanaged and -mangled foray into feature filmmaking (1992’s Alien³) proved so exasperating and humiliating that he nearly swore off of making full-length movies ever again. But upon being sent a script about a serial killer who commits a series of gruesome, elaborately staged murders, Fincher found himself sufficiently intrigued to take on the project but only if New Line Cinema didn’t compromise the bleakness of the material. He got his way, and a filmmaker seemingly bound to retreat from Hollywood subsequently emerged as one of its brightest stars of the decade.

Set in an unnamed city so crime-ridden, paranoid, and rotting at the seams that it makes Batman’s Gotham look like Xanadu, Se7en would be bleak and unsettling enough even if it dealt with everyday crime. But the crimes that veteran detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and newly...

Kenny Ortega is now a name associated with some of Disneys biggest hits aimed at children and teenagers, and back in 1993, he brought the story of the Sanderson Sisters to life in Hocus Pocus. Ortega began his career as a choreographer, working in movies like Xanadu, St. Elmos Fire, and Dirty Dancing. In 1992, Ortega made his directorial debut with Newsies, a historical musical drama based on the New York City newsboys strike of 1899. For his second movie, Ortega left musicals aside and focused on a Halloween story with witches, magical books, zombies, and more.

Christian Bales 32-Year-Old Disney Movie Was A Box Office Bomb But Showed He Was Ready To Be A Star
Image
Disneys 1992 musical Newsies was a financial disaster, but the lead role of Jack Cowboy Kelly gave Christian Bale the opportunity to demonstrate that he was ready to be a movie star. At the time, Bale had been a child star in Steven Spielbergs Empire of The Sun four years prior, with Newsies being an important transition into more adult roles for Bale. Newsies is a musical about the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City, when the teens and children who sold newspapers went on strike to protest the newspaper conglomerates raising the price of a newspaper.

As the magnetic leader of the strike, Bale's Jack Kelly showcased a spectrum of emotions and a variety of skills beyond just acting, singing, and dancing. Bale displays the charm he would later bring to Little Women and the physicality that would define many of Bale's future roles. While the critical response to Newsies was mixed,...

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Soundtrack Guide - Every Song & When They Play
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episodes 1 through 8.

"Pretty Little Liars: Summer School" offers a bright summer slasher vibe with familiar characters and a new villain. Returning characters face new challenges as they navigate summer school and encounter the mysterious "Bloody Rose." The Max show's soundtrack includes popular songs like "School's Out" by Alice Cooper and "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is a stark contrast to Original Sin, with brighter tones, sunny vibes, and, of course, several pop hits that are perfect for summer break. The slasher and horror elements are still present (proven by the haunting instrumental additions to the show's score) as the five teenagers recover from their experience with "A," aka Archie Waters, and try to move on. However, a new villain named "Bloody Rose" throws a wrench into the characters' plans in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Image
Zack Snyder recently revealed the exciting possibility that fans could finally get a new Snyderverse of sorts. The former DC Extended Universe filmmaker disclosed he has been laying the groundwork for a shared Netflix universe between his space opera film, Rebel Moon, and his zombie apocalypse movie, Army of the Dead.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Snyder discussed the recently released Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. The director revealed he included an Easter egg directly tying together the aliens of Rebel Moon and the zombie plague that left the earth a charred battlefield in Army of the Dead. "Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead definitely can exist in the same universe," Snyder said. "I think I've said that, but there's a character in movie one when they go into -- I don't know if I've talked about this -- when they go into the bar, and there's a Xanadite.

Image
The Criterion Collection is known for their dedication to championing classic and contemporary movies we should all be seeing, showcasing them with exquisite transfers and film school-level special features. But when it comes to their streaming service The Criterion Channel, the catalog is a bit looser. And it got weird and worse(?) this month, as they added a 14-title retrospective of the Golden Raspberry Awards. Titled “And the Razzie Goes To…”, Criterion’s grouping compiles 14 movies that come complete with bees, turkey time and whatever the hell Tom Green was doing for the duration of Freddy Got Fingered.

Here is the full list of Razzie flicks now available on The Criterion Channel: Cruising (1980), Heaven’s Gate (1980), Xanadu (1980), Querelle (1982), Under the Cherry Moon (1986), Ishtar (1987), Cocktail (1988), Showgirls (1995), Barb Wire (1996), The Blair Witch Project (1999), Freddy Got Fingered (2001), Swept Away (2002), Gigli (2003), and The Wicker Man (2006). The Best Streaming Service Is Going To Highlight The 'Worst' Movies
Image
There is, a critic will argue, a great deal of value in finding and discussing the worst films of the year. All the films released in a given epoch are a reflection of the trends and ideas that produced them, and scoring the bottom of the barrel for the worst filmmaking, the worst ideas, and the most misguided thinking will provide a valuable analysis of where we are as a society. Worst-of lists are important and vital and should be written with enthusiasm. They also let critics blow off steam a little bit; we don't have the luxury to skip bad movies or avoid talking about the ones we hate. It's our job.

The Golden Raspberries, or the Razzies for short, however, lost sight of that value a while back. The annual Razzies announcement is usually a snarky affair that only serves to pick on the year's least popular blockbusters,...

10 Great Performances In Bad Musicals
Image
Outstanding performances can elevate even the worst musicals, like Maddie Ziegler's in "Music" and Gene Kelly's in "Xanadu." Despite critical and commercial failures, talents like Kelly Clarkson in "From Justin to Kelly" and Michelle Pfeiffer in "Grease 2" are worth watching. Cher's powerful vocals in "Burlesque" and Emmy Rossum's remarkable portrayal of Christine in "Phantom of the Opera" solidify their status as entertainment legends.

Musicals, one of the most beloved genres in Hollywood, have produced some great performances even in bad movies. Full of enchanting performances, catchy songs, and dazzling theatrics, it's easy to see why they are so popular. When done well, they can be extraordinary, but not all musicals hit the mark. Over the years, some have failed to resonate with critics and audiences. But even in less successful musicals, there can be outstanding performances by actors that make them worth watching. These performances...

Victor J. Kemper, Cinematographer on ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, ‘Husbands’ and ‘The Jerk,’ Dies at 96
Image
Victor J. Kemper, the veteran cinematographer who shot more than 50 features, including Dog Day Afternoon, Eyes of Laura Mars, The Jerk and Slap Shot, has died. He was 96.

Kemper died Monday of natural causes in Sherman Oaks, his son, Steven Kemper, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Kemper earned his inaugural D.P. credit on Husbands (1970), written and directed by John Cassavetes, then shot Elia Kazan’s final feature, The Last Tycoon (1976) and Tim Burton’s first, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985).

Kemper also did six films for director Arthur Hiller — The Tiger Makes Out (1967), The Hospital (1971), Author! Author! (1982), The Lonely Guy (1984), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) and Married to It (1991) — and three in a row for Carl Reiner: Oh God! (1977), The One and Only (1978) and The Jerk (1979).

10 "Awful" Movies With Amazing Soundtracks We Can Listen To Over & Over Again
Image
Great soundtracks from "bad" movies can become standalone hits that captivate audiences and thrive in popular culture. Some lesser-quality musicals, such as The Wiz, Xanadu, and Blue Hawaii at least feature exceptional soundtracks that endure by showcasing the talent of prolific songwriters and iconic artists. Movies like Suicide Squad, Batman Forever, and Flash Gordon may be considered "awful," but their soundtracks contain incredible earworms and musical gems.

Many movies that fall short in terms of critical acclaim or box office success at least leave enduring legacies with the exceptional soundtracks they produce. These "bad" movies paradoxically give rise to musical treasures that continue to captivate audiences long after they're dismissed as unwatchable. Featuring compositions by some of the most prolific songwriters and performed by some of the most iconic music artists of all time, these purportedly "awful" films have gifted audiences and music lovers with some incredible earworms.

While there...

Five Nights At Freddy Is Campy Horror For Kids And That's A Good Thing
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Five Nights at Freddy's."

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.

My first camp film was Tim Burton's oft-maligned alien comedy,...

Writer-director Greta Gerwig reveled in the adoration for her summertime box office and cultural phenomenon “Barbie”(nearly $1.5 billion internationally) while flanked by members of the team responsible for its music at a packed Society of Composers & Lyricists-sponsored screening and panel discussion Friday night at the Directors Guild in Hollywood, celebrating a “Barbie: The Album” soundtrack that’s primed for both Oscar and Grammy liftoff over the next four months. Gerwig, Oscar-winning composer and songwriter Mark Ronson, pop star Dua Lipa and songwriter Caroline Ailin. That soundtrack is submitted on the Grammy ballot a whopping 33 times in the various categories, from Billie Eilish to star Ryan Gosling.

On Friday, those joining moderator Tim Greiving discussed how the music all came together, with Ronson – an Academy Award winner in 2019 for “A Star is Born” – saying that it all began with a call from his music supervisor friend George Drakoulias. “He just said,...

This Parody Film Is the Most Underrated Campy ‘80s Movie
Image
When one thinks of the camp films of the 1980s - and there are many, many to choose from - what comes to mind are classics like Xanadu, Flash Gordon, and Mommie Dearest. There is one, however, that doesn't get the love it deserves. It's a sequel to the classic “so bad it’s good” film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and given the original's cutting-edge special effects, Oscar-level acting, and memorable soundtrack, one would be forgiven for being unaware – or in complete disbelief – that it spawned a sequel, let alone a franchise. Yes, a franchise: three sequels and an animated television series. It certainly would not be much of a stretch to assume that these sequels are just as bad, if not worse, than Attack, and to give them a pass as a result. To do so, however, is to miss out on its first sequel, and the most...

Mega-Producer Joel Silver Convinced Robert Downey Jr. To Deliver One Of Avengers: Endgame's Best Lines
Image
When Jon Favreau made "Iron Man" in 2008, he, like many, assumed it might be the last time audiences ever saw the character on the big screen. As such, he included a few cute in-jokes that were never really meant to be extrapolated into future movies. One was the post-credits stinger when Iron Man was approached by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) about joining a team called the Avengers Initiative. Favreau has admitted in interviews that it was meant to be nothing more than a wink to fans, and not a promise of things to come.

The other in-joke was the film's last line of dialogue. When asked if he knew anything about the mysterious armor-clad superhero that had been rocketing around the world disarming terrorists, Tony Stark winked and said out loud "I am Iron Man." In superhero comics, his secret identity would have been vital. With that single line of dialogue,...

TCM Film Festival: Final Diary - Xanadu
Image
By Christopher James

Have you ever watched a movie and realized it was instantly going to be part of your personality? Last weekend at a midnight screening of Xanadu, I thought I was merely filling a critical hole in my gay camp movie repertoire. The Olivia Newton John 1980 roller skating musical was a bomb when it first opened. Yet, through hit songs like “Magic” and “Xanadu,” the film hung around long enough to become a cult classic. Obviously the term “roller skating musical” doesn’t inspire much confidence in a film’s storytelling prowess. Xanadu isn’t a “so bad it’s good” curio piece. Instead, it’s an ambitious, messy, misunderstood masterpiece about the ebbs and flow of art and taste...

The End Of TCM Underground Is A Huge Loss
Image
If there's a basic, no-frills definition for movies, it's that they're made to be seen. Cinema is a populist medium, attempting to reach as wide an audience as possible for as long as possible.

Perhaps that's why the feeling of "discovering" a movie can be so powerfully enjoyable. It gives you the sense, however false, that you're stumbling upon a secret piece of entertainment made just for you. If you happen to discover such a movie in the wee hours of the morning, so much the better — the surreal setting only serves to make what you're watching seem that much more unreal, richer, and special.

It's that sensation that the programming block on Turner Classic Movies known as "TCM Underground" sought to capture every Friday night-turned-Saturday morning. Begun by Eric Weber in 2006 and continued by programmer Millie De Chirico starting in 2007, TCM Underground made it its business to curate some of the most obscure,...

‘I’ll Always Be an Aussie’: G’Day USA Arts Gala Hails Sam Worthington, The Kid Laroi, Miranda Kerr and Pays Tribute to Olivia Newton-John
Image
“I’ll always be an Aussie,” supermodel and entrepreneur Miranda Kerr told the crowd Saturday night at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center as she was honored along with other Australians in the entertainment industry at the 20th anniversary G’Day USA Arts Gala.

Kerr, “Avatar” star Sam Worthington and rising-star rapper The Kid Laroi were feted by the American Australian Association, a trade organization that nurtures ties between the U.S. and the southern hemisphere powerhouse. The evening also featured an emotional tribute to Olivia Newton-John, the Australian singer-actor who died in August at age 73 after a battle with breast cancer.

“Every day with Olivia was supernatural,” said Paul Hogan, the veteran Australian comedian and performer, recounting his first meeting with Newton-John at a TV taping at the Sydney Opera House in the 1980s. He also remembered his last time working with when her, when he asked her to shoot...

Stranger Sings! Titanique! What Makes Parody Musicals Popcorn Fun
Image
How do you make a crowdpleasing parody musical of pop culture? There's no one answer. At their best (or bare minimum), a solid musical parody is a popcorn box of catchy songs, jokes, and wish fulfillment. Enjoy something as bloody and racy as "Game of Thrones"? "Game of Thrones: The Musical (The Unauthorized Parody)" features tap-dancing direwolves and wordplay ("I accept your Hand job"). Like or dislike the rom-com "Love Actually"? The musical spoof "Love Actually?" ridicules the movie's purported best and worst qualities.

This year, I highlight two parody musicals different in genres: one that reimagines a romantic epic blockbuster and the other that spoofs a mega-hit sci-fi streaming show. The best of their tactics underline the revelry of spoofing intellectual properties. For those who already enjoy the source material, these are for you.

Stranger Sings!
