‘Alien: Earth’ Creator Noah Hawley Shares the Chilling Reason Behind the FX Series’ New Creatures
Image
When Noah Hawley started working on what would become “Alien: Earth,” he knew it was vital to capture the shock and horror audiences first felt when they saw Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic. That’s a tall order considering the “Alien” franchise has gutted all of the Xenomorph’s surprises over the course of seven films and two crossover movies.

“I’ve managed somehow to have this niche of reinventing classic movies as television shows. If I have a skill at it, it’s in understanding what the original movie made me feel and why,” Hawley told a group of reporters in May that included TheWrap. “Seven movies later, there’s no discovery or mystery in the life cycle of this creature, so that feeling the audience has is unavailable to me, which is why I felt I had to introduce new creatures.”

“Ridley, candidly, his biggest concern for Noah and...

Saw #AlienEarth pilot here at #Sdcc. Very strange (in a good way), smart take. Thankfully, not just a rehash of the movies because of Noah Hawley and his Fargo TV series sensibility. You’ll think you won’t be keeping up with all the characters but no worry: victims,...

Severance, The Penguin and The Last of Us dominate the 2025 Emmy nominations
Image
The time has come to dive into the list of 2025 Emmy Nominations, where, as luck would have it, some of the most nominated shows are from the science fiction and fantasy genres. What may be more surprising is that HBO has beaten Netflix for the most Emmy Nominations, with a total of 142, thanks to hit shows such as The White Lotus, The Penguin and The Last of Us. That's the most nominations the network has ever received.

Speaking of The Last of Us, it joins the ranks of most nominated shows alongside Severance (Apple TV+), Black Mirror (Netflix), Andor (Disney+), What We Do In The Shadows (FX), and The Boys (Prime Video). Severance, The Penguin, The Last of Us, Andor and Black Mirror are amongst the most-nominated shows.

Tell me, truthfully, are we really that surprised? Let's get into the details, shall we?

Severance is topping the list (rightfully so...

2025 Emmy nominations by network: HBO Max leads with 142, followed by Netflix with 120

The newly rechristened HBO Max, which ceded the Emmy crown to Netflix last year, has reclaimed the title.

Fueled by a strong slate of contenders that includes The White Lotus (24 nominations), The Penguin (24 nominations), The Last of Us (17 nominations), Hacks (15 nominations), and The Pitt (13 nominations), HBO Max earned a record 142 Emmy nominations across 20 titles — a massive jump from last year's total of just 91.

Netflix's total of 120 — up from 107 last year — was spread across a deeper bench of 44 titles, including limited series Adolescence (13 nominations), Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story (11 noms), and Black Mirror (10 noms), among others.

Apple TV+ was rewarded with an impressive third-place finish, thanks to the success of its hit series Severance (27 nominations) and The Studio (23 noms), the top-performing drama and comedy, respectively.

Here is the scorecard for how the top platforms performed, along with their previous year totals:

HBO Max: 142 | 2024: 91 | 2023: 127 | 2022: 140 | 2021: 130 | 2020: 107 | 2019:...

How Solo Voices Became the Key to the Haunting Scores of ‘Adolescence’ and ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’
Image
A single human voice singing, wordlessly, can evoke a sense of humanity — or inhumanity — depending on the behavior we witness on our screens.

This was the case in two much talked-about streaming series, accomplished in very different ways but with a similar goal in mind: the music of “Adolescence,” by Aaron May and David Ridley, and of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” by the father-daughter team of Thomas and Julia Newman. Both aired on Netflix.

One of their key choices was to include the voice of Emilia Holliday, the young actress who plays Katie Leonard, the victim. “Throughout the series, we never hear her speak,...

John Landgraf’s Optimistic Forecast for Hollywood: “It’ll Still Be Here”
Image
With a collective ennui permeating the entertainment industry, it’d be understandable if many in attendance at a Thursday discussion with FX’s John Landgraf and Disney’s Eric Schrier might have been seeking at least one reason to feel optimistic. And they got it. Sort of.

Late in the Disney lot panel put on by Hollywood Radio & Television Society, the moderator, director Paris Barclay, finally turned from the topic at hand (“cultivating creative excellence”) to the one on everybody’s mind: industry shrinkage. “You’ve got to tell us [Hollywood] is going to be Ok,” Barclay jokingly implored the FX chairman.

“It’ll still be here,” Landgraf replied.

“And there’ll be a place for all of us?” Barclay countered.

“I don’t know about all of us,” he replied. “I can’t speak for everyone. Personally, my singular strategy is just keep getting better. Early in my career,...

Amid her run as one of the stars of the serial killer series Dexter, Jennifer Carpenter starred in a zombie movie released in 2008. The film, along with its sequel, can be revisited for free after recently becoming available to watch on Tubi.

Per Tubi, Quarantine and Quarantine 2: Terminal are streaming on Tubi as of March 1. Quarantine, which is a found footage horror film, is based on the original Spanish movie Rec. The movie stars Carpenter as news reporter Angela Vidal, who arrives at an apartment building to report on a strange distress call made to authorities. Unfortunately, a zombie-like virus is spreading in the building, resulting in the government to place the whole area in quarantine, effectively strapping survivors inside with the undead. Disney unveils the first Alien: Earth footage in 2025 promo video that also features Marvel, Star Wars, & more
Alien: Das unheimliche Wesen aus einer fremden Welt (1979)
The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series called Alien: Earth, from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The show began filming in Thailand last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. Filming resumed earlier this year and wrapped a few months ago – and now the first footage has been unveiled! This footage can be seen in the embed above, a video Disney+ released to celebrate five years of their streaming service and to give a preview of the shows that will be reaching Disney+ and “Hulu on Disney+” in the next year (so Alien: Earth could be described as an “FX on Hulu on Disney+” project), as Hulu is streaming in the Disney+ app for Bundle subscribers in the United States.

Of course, Alien: Earth isn’t the only show featured in this promo video.

Slow Horses Just Ended An Embarrassing 2-Year-Long Streak
Image
Slow Horses finally receives an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series after long-overlooked success. The acclaimed Apple TV+ show features a stellar cast and a gripping spy premise that captivates audiences. Despite past award wins, Slow Horses' recent Emmy recognition marks a turning point for the series' prestige.

Slow Horses is finally getting the recognition many believe it deserves - though it took an embarrassing amount of time for the powers that be to give the show its flowers. The critically acclaimed British spy thriller TV show based on the novel series Slough House by Mick Herron hit Apple TV+ in April 2022 and took off with two subsequent seasons in December 2022 and November 2023, respectively. Amid its well-to-do run, Slow Horses gained renewal for seasons 4 and 5, with the former set to premiere on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, and the latter still pending release confirmation.

Like Herron's esteemed novels, Slow Horses has continually...

2024 Emmy nominations: Netflix leads tally, FX and HBO follow
Image
From 2021 to 2023, HBO and it streaming service Max led all networks on the Emmy nominations scorecard. But this year, the paycaster had to settle for third place with 91 nominations while Netflix, which led the list in 2018 and 2020, staged a staggering comeback and reaped a leading 107 bids.

Of these, a whopping 19 were for the final season of “The Crown,” which more than tripled its 2023 showing. In all, 19 Netflix programs earned multiple notices this year, with its other double-digit contenders being “Ripley” (13) and “Baby Reindeer” (11).

FX vaulted from seventh to second place with a total of 93 nominations. The two shows that lead the overall nominations — “Shōgun” (25) and “The Bear” (23) — accounted for more than half of these.

As is to be expected nowadays, the big four traditional broadcast networks were outpaced by paycasters and streamers. They amassed a combined total of 115 nominations, which is 29 more than they received in 2023. With 38 mentions, ABC remains...

Netflix’s Bela Bajaria Lauds History Makers Sofia Vergara & ‘Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau As Streamer Celebrates Broad Emmy Nominations Haul
Image
Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.

It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.

There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.

Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

‘Griselda’s Sofia Vergara Makes History As First Latina Nominated For Lead Actress In Limited Series
Image
Sofia Vergara has earned her fifth Emmy Award nomination today for her portrayal of real-life drug queenpin Griselda Blanco in the Netflix miniseries Griselda, the first dramatic role of her career. The recognition makes Colombia-born Vergara the first Latina, born in a Latin country, nominated in the “Lead Actress in a Limited Series” category.

Latin American Anya Taylor-Joy—who won in the category for The Queen’s Gambit—was born in Miami to an Argentine father.

Vergara’s four prior Emmy nominations (2010-2013) were under the “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” category for her portrayal of Gloria Pritchett in ABC’s Modern Family.

From creators Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda and Carlo Bernard, Griselda chronicles the life of Colombian-born Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family.
