The new anime adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo's classic manga Cat's Eye premieres next month, bringing with it memorable characters from decades past. Two new voice actors have joined the cast, one of whom will be voicing a character who never appeared in the original anime adaptation! Counterprogramming during the holidays has led to some odd moments in horror history. For instance, it was in 1991, and a week before Christmas, when USA Network aired Strays. There on an otherwise average Wednesday in mid-December, the cable channel unleashed its killer kitty flick. So not only was the latest World Premiere Movie—USA’s way of saying “made for TV”—a welcome break in the scheduled festivities, it was a surprise gift for fans of Animal Horror.

Directed by John McPherson and written by Shaun Cassidy—yes, that Shaun Cassidy—Strays centers on a city-to-country family that is dangerously close to becoming human scratching posts. The cast included Timothy Busfield, who was fresh off the series thirtysomething, and Kathleen Quinlan, who had led another USA horror telefilm called Trapped. Disney+ will premiere its anime adaptation Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation on October 29.

The anime series follows a high school student named Yuken who is whisked away to a world of magic. He must steer clear of danger and work with his classmates to try and return home.

The adaptation is based on a popular Disney IP mobile game that first launched in Japan in 2020, created by Aniplex and Walt Disney Japan.

The game has been downloaded over 4.8M times in Japan, with manga and novel adaptations, alongside several consumer products.

Disney+ has ordered “Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation,” marking the streamer’s latest push into Japanese animation with a series based on the blockbuster mobile gaming property.

In the “Twisted-Wonderland” universe, the seven villainous figures have been transformed into revered historical legends known as the Great Seven. Each villain’s legacy led to the establishment of a specific dormitory at Night Raven College, creating distinct magical communities within the academy. Students are sorted into these houses based on their personalities and magical aptitudes.

The anime centers on a Tokyo high schooler named Yuken Enma who gets whisked into a magical realm populated by characters inspired by classic Disney baddies. The fictional Night Raven College serves as a training ground for aspiring sorcerers, with dormitories themed around villainous icons like the Queen of Hearts, Scar, Ursula, Jafar, the Evil Queen, Hades and Maleficent.

Being Stephen King sounds like a dream come true. While you're off writing your next hit novel, ten other adaptations of your work are being developed for film and television. "The Life of Chuck," "The Long Walk" and "The Running Man" will all hit theaters this year alone, with the "It" spin-off series "Welcome to Derry" set for an HBO release in the back half. Although it shouldn't come as a shock to learn that there's even more King news on the horizon, the title involved comes with its own set of implications.

According to Puck's "What I'm Hearing" newsletter from writer (and "The Studio" star) Matthew Belloni, King has taken steps to place the rights of "The Shawshank Redemption" back into his personal library:

"Stephen King's lawyers have notified Warner Bros. that he will be terminating the copyright license for 'The Shawshank Redemption,' one of my favorite movies.

June arrives this weekend, which means a new slate of library additions is set to arrive on your favorite streaming services. Hulu, HBO Max, Netflix, Peacock, Paramount+, Shudder, and Tubi have announced their June 2025 lineup, so we’re compiling them all into a handy horror guide for your watchlists.

Of note, Hulu is embracing the Aliens and Predator franchises in a big way, especially with the arrival of the animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers. Peacock goes all in on the Jurassic World franchise just ahead of Jurassic World Rebirth, which will be released in theaters in July. The streamer also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jaws with a film collection dedicated to the franchise.

Two years after the movie adaptation of Stephen King’sCujo was released, the acclaimed author teamed up with the film's director, Lewis Teague, for the 1985 horror thriller Cat's Eye. The movie will be available to stream for free on Tubi from June 1.

Much like another King adaptation, the George A. Romero-directed Creepshow, Cat's Eye is based on three of the author's short stories, namely, Quitters Inc, The Ledge and General. The film plays out like an anthology and follows a cat as it makes its way to a smoker's clinic, a penthouse ledge, and a young girl's room. The movie currently holds a 68% critic score and a 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first story focuses on Dick Morrison (James Woods) as he tries to quit smoking and seeks the help of a service with ties to the mob that threatens his family if he decides to take up the habit again.

Tubi, Fox’s free streaming service, has announced its list of June titles. The Tubi June 2025 slate features new Tubi Originals, TV series, and numerous action, art house, Black cinema, comedy, documentary, drama, horror, kids and family, sci-fi and fantasy, thriller, and Western titles.

Two things were hot in 1980s horror: formulaic slashers and Stephen King. The mega success of Brian De Palma’s Carrie in 1976 followed by Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece The Shining, turned the unpolished Maine writer into a household name and left studios clamoring to secure rights to his next terrifying tale. By 1985, the trend was in full swing with multiple adaptations filling theaters and more rushing their way into production. After the success of his 1983 adaptation of Cujo, director Lewis Teague took inspiration from another household pet with the 1985 film Cat’s Eye. This anthology film sees King adapt two of his own stories from the 1978 collection Night Shift while penning an original story to tie them together. Starring the Firestarter herself, Drew Barrymore, the film is an 80s curio filled with maniacal mobsters, mythical creatures, and an intrepid cat determined to save the day.

If you are the parent of a curious child whose reading level is well above their age, and, most importantly, seems to be seriously into horror, you're going to want to introduce them to the literature of Stephen King earlier than might feel responsible. If they can handle mainstream screamfests like "Poltergeist," "Alien," and "The Omen" (1976), they are ready to begin their lifelong journey through King's oeuvre. And he is so accessible as a storyteller in terms of vocabulary that much of what might seem beyond a burgeoning reader's ken is surprisingly graspable. The content can be a bit much, but King's edgiest works are unlikely to appeal to kids in the first place. They're not going to get a whole lot out of "Gerald's Game." They will want to read "Pet Sematary."

Stephen King superfans, especially those who have read the books in the "Dark Tower" series (currently being adapted by Mike Flanagan), will be able to tell you that many of the author's stories interconnect in unexpected ways. For instance: in the original novel of King's "It," Dick Halloran from "The Shining" appears and interacts with one of the story's child protagonists. There is a scene in "Wizard and Glass," the fourth "Dark Tower" novel, where the characters visit the plague-ridden reality of King's "The Stand." The character of Father Callahan from "Salem's Lot" becomes one of the main characters of the "Dark Tower" series. There are also several King stories that take place in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. There are many other connections that a deep-cut King reader could add to this list.

The 1980s werewolf movie Silver Bullet was panned as a complete howler by many critics on its release, but fans of the cult classic werewolf movie starring Gary Busey and Corey Haim from the mind of Stephen King can now stream the movie for free. The horror film from 1985 is now part of Tubi's extensive library of scary movies, although the scares in this one are admittedly few and far between. However, that doesn't mean Silver Buller isn't worth a rewatch.

Other horror titles arriving on Tubi include four Insidious movies, both Grindhouse movies by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, the zombie feature starring Brad Pitt, World War Z, and the "alligators act like sharks" movie, Crawl, among others. However, if you're in for a Stephen King marathon, Tubi also offers adaptations like Children of the Corn, two Carrie movies, the author's directorial effort Maximum Overdrive, and Creepshow 2.

With the release of Oz Perkins' The Monkey, based on Stephen King's short story by the same name from the 1985 collection Skeleton Crew, there's just bound to be a resurgence of interest in the lesser-known adaptions of the writer's works. Cat's Eye, which came out the same year Skeleton Crew was published, is one such project that could certainly be revisited. In the lists of many of King's screen adaptations, this film, directed by Lewis Teague, wouldn't ever appear at the top as "the best of the best" — because it isn't. Be that as it may, it is still a very enjoyable outing, especially looking back at the film now, after myriads of not-so-great screen versions that didn't really manage to capture King's trademark tone right. It definitely works to Cat's Eye's advantage that, in this case, Stephen King actually got on with writing the screenplay himself.

As one of the most popular and acclaimed American writers, Stephen King has crafted many novels that hook readers into different worlds with great characters, intricate prose and imaginative settings. At the same time, among the countless authors whose works have been adapted into films, Stephen King has had huge success with several of his novels being turned into movies. However, despite a variety of the author’s books given the cinematic treatment, not every motion picture best reflects the novel’s intent.

With the television landscape heightening and expanding storytelling in a way that film never could, Stephen King’s material is a perfect resource to turn into an episodic format. Given the author’s history of writing long and detailed narratives, a series can elevate a Stephen King novel and excite fans with every new episode. Smile 2 director Parker Finn said they prioritized building a believable persona for the film's main protagonist. The sequel is bigger and bolder with a pop superstar as the demon curse's new focus. Smile 2 follows pop sensation Skye Riley's (played by Naomi Scott) rehabilitation and recovery after a life-changing event; the fictional character appears on The Drew Barrymore Show to reflect on her recovery and to announce her comeback concert. Finn told Entertainment Weekly that Barrymore's cameo validated Skye Riley's celebrity status.

"We had only sort of pulled back the corner of the rug to peek under," Finn told GamesRadar+. The new poster showcases dripping blood formed in the shape of a smile. Also highlighted is the tagline, which reads, "It's the last thing you'll ever see." The movie will hit theaters on Oct. 18, but for now, horror fans can take a look at the Smile 2 poster and trailer below. In the trailer, horror fans will be treated to a surprise appearance from Drew Barrymore, who's playing herself on her talk show. Barrymore famously played one of the first Ghostface victims in the original Scream, and she also starred in the Stephen King adaptations Firestarter and Cat's Eye, forever making her a legend of the genre.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.

Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. Monkey Punch's Lupin III manga continues to expand its universe with a newly-announced kabuki stage play that will run at the Shinbashi Enbujo theater in Tokyo this December.

According to Anime News Network, the stage play's original story will depict Lupin and his cohorts in the Japanese Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600), the same era of the original Goemon Ishikawa. While the Goemon most fans are familiar with is his 13th descendant, this play will be an opportunity for fans to see the main cast interact with the fabled original, who remains a mythological hero in Japan.

The play will star Ainosuke Kataoka as Lupin III, Matsuya Onoe as Goemon Ishikawa, Saburō Ichikawa as Daisuke Jigen, Emiya Ichikawa as Fujiko Mine and Chūsha Ihchikawa as Inspector Zenigata. The franchise has had stage plays before, but not of the kabuki variety.

The upcoming anime film City Hunter: Angel Dust will not only feature the eponymous sweeper Ryo Saeba, but also several surprise guest appearances. The cameos include anime characters from other well-known franchises, as well as vocal performances by Japanese celebrities. With such guest stars, Sunrise seems intent on getting people to see City Hunter in time for the original anime's 35-year anniversary.

The movie is a follow-up to 2019's City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes, which already had a surprise cameo by the Kisugi sisters from the anime Cat's Eye, another creation by City Hunter's writer, Tsukasa Hojo. Angel Dust, however, looks to be doubling down on its strategy with even more familiar faces and voices.

Cujo will be released on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on October 24 via Kino Lorber. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the 1983 horror film has been newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative with Dolby Vision/Hdr.

Based on Stephen King’s 1981 novel, Lewis Teague directs from a script by Barbara Turner (Pollock) and Don Carlos Dunaway. Dee Wallace, Daniel Hugh-Kelly, Danny Pintauro, Ed Lauter, and Christopher Stone star.

Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining, though diverging from the novel, captured the mounting tension and dread of the story and deserved more recognition. Kathy Bates' performance in Dolores Claiborne showcased her talent and should've earned her another Best Actress award, while Ian McKellen's work in Apt Pupil was chilling and deserving of a Best Actor nomination.

In a career so far spanning 50 years, Stephen King has published 65 novels (with a 66th imminent) and more than 200 short stories. His books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, and have been regularly snapped up for film and TV adaptation. As a brand name, King is almost as prolific on screen as in print, with at least 60 movies (not even including the eight sequels to Children Of The Corn) and 50 shows to date, with more always incoming.

Cinematically, however, while some of the author’s adaptations are clear-eyed classics, the King association has not always been a guarantee of quality. In the early days, the gold rush to mine his back catalogue yielded more turkeys than treasure. So, with Rob Savage out this week (based on a 1973 short story in King’s _Night Shift collection), Empire have put together a list of the 15 greatest big-screen versions of the legendary scribe’s stories.

Silver Bullet is a 1985 horror movie starring Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Corey Haim, and Megan Follows. The plot concerns a werewolf stalking the streets of Tarker's Mills when the moon is getting big and bright. The script for the film was written by Stephen King, adapting one of his own stories — the 1984 novella Cycle of the Werewolf.

An excellent movie tie-in consists of Cycle of the Werewolf, the Silver Bullet script, stills from the movie, and a new forward by the author. If you're a fan of King and/or are interested in how films are made, then we at MovieWeb highly recommend it. The only problem is the cost, which is a little pricey. Even getting it secondhand is usually at least $60 or $70.

Rodolphe Belmer, the former CEO of Canal+ Group, who recently took the helm of France’s leading commercial channel TF1, said the company looks to forge deeper ties with streaming services, including Netflix, to team on premium content.

Belmer, who was part of Netflix’s administration board from 2018 to 2022, explained TF1 is facing a dearth of U.S. content available for its primetime slots. “U.S. series are less and less available because of the vertical integration of big U.S. production companies and networks, so we have to replace the bulk of these programs,” said Belmer, who recently succeeded to Gilles Pelisson as CEO and chairman of TF1.

The French executive pointed out these U.S. shows are not easy to replace because they pulled some of the highest ratings on primetime TF1 and were “very profitable because the costs to acquire them were largely below the advertising revenues they generated.

Universal’s Cocaine Bear from director Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels) arrives in theaters this Friday, February 24, 2023.

How do the various Stephen King Movie Franchises rank alongside each other? Since his first novel Carrie was turned into an unforgettable supernatural thriller by Brian De Palma, rarely a year has gone by that didn't have a Stephen King movie or TV series. A rush to adapt King's work in the '80s led to a real mixed bag in terms of quality; for every Christine or Stand By Me, there was a Maximum Overdrive or Silver Bullet.

In the decades since, the ratio has only slightly improved. King's movies are still a must for horror fans, however, and his work appears to be as popular as it ever was. One thing King isn't a particular fan of is sequels to movies based on his work where he didn't have a hand in the story. That might explain why there are relatively few examples, as only a select few have spawned follow-ups.

One of the very best Stephen King adaptations is tearing into 4K Ultra HD, with Kino Lorber announcing that director Lewis Teague’s Cujo is one of their next 4K Uhd upgrades.

The company is teasing a “brand new Hdr Dolby Vision master.”

Dee Wallace, Ed Lauter, Daniel Hugh Kelly, and Danny Pintauro star in Cujo, which was released in theaters in 1983. Yes, that means Cujo is turning 40 Years Old this year.

Halloween is fast approaching, so horror fans are no doubt in the middle of month-long marathons of all their favorite movies to get them in the mood. One of the great traditions in the horror genre is that of the horror anthology, ranging from classics like Creepshow to the upcoming V/H/S/99.

While there now seems to be at least one horror anthology released every year, the subgenre has a long history in Hollywood and beyond, with filmmakers the world over putting their stamp on it. For fans looking for the cinematic equivalent of a collection of short horror stories, one can look at Rotten Tomatoes to see which ones earned the most critical praise.

Cat's Eye (1985): 69

In addition to his numerous novels, Stephen King is also famous for his short stories, and this adaptation of his Night Shift collection was one of the first to bring them to the screen.

Idris Elba is poised to fight for survival against a ravenous lion when Beast roars into theaters this weekend. And Steven Spielberg’s shark classic, Jaws, swims back into theaters next month with a first-ever IMAX and Real 3D re-release. Both films send the clear message that this summer belongs to pissed-off animals on the attack.

This week’s streaming picks celebrate the summer subgenre with five titles that center around predators from the animal kingdom, some real and some a bit farfetched. All bring the teeth, claws, scales, and attitude to deliver summer thrills.

Young Justice: Phantoms Season 4 Episode 24

It’s not possible for the Young Justice: Phantoms team to be reading what’s published on this little ol’ site and responding to it in almost real time. The lead time on animation is usually massive: what we see on HBO Max was probably written a year or more ago. That said, it certainly feels like the writers were thinking the same thing I was after last week: holy cats there’s a lot left to do.

And this week they started crossing stuff off their list.
