In the 1970s a ‘nude biologist brandishing a cigar’ wrote a game-changing sex manual. Now, ‘Shazza’ is putting his story on the big screen

Sex positivity, polyamory, threesomes: they may not be universal practices but the extent to which they are more acceptable these days has a lot to do with a largely forgotten British polymath called Alex Comfort. In 1972, the physician, expert on molluscs and gerontologist published The Joy of Sex, the first popular book in the English language that explained and celebrated the art of making love.

A coffee table how-to guide with tasteful drawings of a naked couple in an imaginative range of sexual positions, it became a huge international bestseller and helped shift perceptions of sex some way along the procreational-recreational axis.

Michelle Meyrink isn't an A-list celebrity, but she was a low-key staple of 1980s cinema, known for her quirky charm and ability to bring eccentric characters to life. Born in Vancouver, Canada, Meyrink pursued her passion for acting at a young age, quickly making a name for herself in Hollywood (via The Biography). She began with small but memorable roles in films like The Outsiders and Valley Girl, but her big break came with the 1984 cult classic Revenge of the Nerds, where she played Judy, a lovable female nerd.

Meyrink's career continued to thrive with roles in films like Real Genius, where her portrayal of the hyperactive genius Jordan Cochran became one of her most celebrated performances. Though she left acting in the late '80s, her roles in movies like One Magic Christmas and Permanent Record showcased her versatility, leaving a lasting impression on the cinema of the decade.

Netflix kicked off their Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection initiative back in January with a 50th anniversary collection paying tribute to the movies of 1974, which notably included Larry Cohen’s horror movie It’s Alive. We were also promised collections celebrating 1984, 1994 and 2004 in the coming months, and the 1984 collection is now live.

A tender love story, Dina is a documentary that could easily be mistaken for a fiction film. Framed in long takes, often on a tripod, several choices other than its style call the film’s legitimacy into question, including a key moment which occurs in the film’s third act that leaves one wondering if directors Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini are playing fair. The film, up until that moment, is so engrossing that as manipulative as it may appear, I’m willing to forgive the choice of pulling back the curtain a bit on a moment that’s offered up with little context.

Neither of these analogies are particularly accurate but we're in the right territory - the wild region to use a more literal translation of the original title - for Mexican director Amat Escalante's polymorphously perverse fantasy The Untamed, slopping onto the Venice Lido this week. A massive asteroid or perhaps a rock-like spaceship hangs in the cold vastness of space. From here, we go to a dark sweaty place where a young woman Veronica (Simone Bucio) is having sex with a large tentacle.

THR has released an official list of the most viewed trailers of 2014. And you may be surprised to see which movie came in first. While a lot of your are probably guessing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it was actually Fifty Shades of Grey that took top honors. Annie (Cameron Diaz: The Other Woman, The Counsellor) and Jay (Jason Segel: This Is the End, The Five-Year Engagement) need to spice up their bedroom time: they’re still madly in love with each other, but their busy lives — including two rambunctious gradeschoolers — have left them just plain physically exhausted. So they decide to video themselves running through all the positions in The Joy of Sex. It works: they have a wonderful night. But a mishap with the Cloud and some iPads that they had given away as gifts — to family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances — sees the file accidentally distributed to all those other devices.

Having previously teamed up for 2011’s Bad Teacher, director Jake Kasdan reunites with Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel for R-rated comedy Sex Tape. Though it starts strong and finishes well, script flaws mean it’s unfunny for the majority of its run time, squandering the potential of a great cast and an entertaining premise.

Segel and Diaz play Jay and Annie, a married couple whose sex life has dulled in the ten years they’ve been together. With the kids out of the house, the two eventually decide to rekindle their intimacy by making a video of themselves trying out every position in ‘The Joy of Sex’. Though the gambit works, Annie and Jay soon discover that their private video has gone public.

That’s a perfectly fine setup, and the opening act is a strong one too. Crucially the film doesn’t begin, as so many others in the genre do,...

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel get themselves into a rather tricky position in Sex Tape, in more ways than one. The two bounced off each other pretty well in Bad Teacher and apparently, that was enough to convince director Jake Kasdan to throw them together again and cut loose with some cheeky nudity and a naughty premise and the end result is a flabby, largely unfunny comedy. Awkward...

Right away, the couple are seen getting up close and very personal, but those were the good old days fondly recalled by Annie (Diaz) who now writes a parenting blog between chores, sleep and sexual frustration. Her now-husband Jay (Segel) has resorted to booking appointments for possible nookie and when they do find the time, it's all friction and no sparks.

Expect lots of big laughs and raunchy sight gags… though one thing audiences shouldn’t be hoping for is something they haven’t seen before. After all, the beast with two backs is hardly an endangered species in Hollywood, and there are always plenty of steamy sex scenes heating up multiplexes. What’s a little bit less common, however, are scenes that play getting down and dirty for laughs, intentionally or otherwise.

We’re just past the Summer mid-point and the tide of rated R for “raunchy” feature films rolls on. So far, we’ve gotten a visit from Melissa McCarthy with Tammy and Seth McFarlane starring in (not just his voice like Ted) A Million Ways To Die In The West. We started early in May with the team captain of the Apatow squad, Seth Rogan in the hit Neighbors. And we’ve even had a sequel with the return of Joanh and Channing in 22 Jump Street. This new flick is unique, because it’s more of a reunion than sequel. Sex Tape gets off to a bad start and I mean a really bad start as Annie (Cameron Diaz) sits down on her mommy blog to tap out her frustrations with the lack of sex in her marriage to Jay (Jason Segel) while recounting the long, sexually charged history of their relationship. Within minutes this movie has you saying, "We get it! Now let's get on with the movie," and yet, the set up takes another 20-30 minutes before the first truly funny scene takes place. Jake Kasdan is to directing comedy what Friedrich Nietzsche is to baking apple strudel. Not much.

As with his Bad Teacher (2011), which also stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal, Kasdan takes a promising concept and lays waste to it. The highly workable concept is a simple one: a sexually active couple, Jay (Segal) and Annie (Diaz), copulate like bunnies on ecstasy until they wed. Two precocious children later, the O in orgasms has moved on to the O on Cheerios boxes. He now is a music producer, I believe, and she blogs a column entitled "Who’s Yo Mommy?" One major contender for comedy of the summer (though Neighbors may already have that one in the bag) is definitely Columbia Pictures’ upcoming Sex Tape, in which a bored married couple (Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz) decide to spice up their love life by recording themselves recreating every position in The Joy of Sex. Sony Pictures has released the first Sex Tape clip from director Jake Kasdan’s upcoming comedy, as well as a batch of new high-resolution images from the film. The pic stars Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz as a couple who, after discovering that their three-hour intimate video has accidentally been uploaded to the cloud, set out to delete the video from the iPads of their friends and family and ensure that their reputations aren’t ruined. This new clip appears to be a scene from the “inciting incident” that leads to the aforementioned sex tape, as Segel’s character is very excited about Diaz’s sexy mobile get-up. Segel also shares screenplay credit on the film with Nicholas Stoller and Kate Angelo, which is encouraging. Sony has already released three Sex Tape trailers, but for a raunchy comedy bluntly titled Sex Tape, it can't hurt to offer more dirty jokes for a red band audience. Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel play a married couple who film a sex tape to spice up their love life. Their video is accidentally uploaded to “the cloud,” which sends the couple through a series of hijinks to prevent everyone they know from seeing the video. A new UK trailer for Jake Kasdan's crime drama/heist thriller Sex Tape is now online and ... wait, what? This is supposed to be a comedy? Well that changes everything! The new trailer is startlingly short on laughs and chooses instead to focus on the heist angle of the couple who must retrieve their sexcapade from "the cloud" before all their friends and family watch it. I'm sure there are some jokes throughout the movie, and they're probably much cleverer than a dog flying off a treadmill, right?
