Some Decent Elements

"Flashdance" meets "Meatballs III" or maybe it should just be called "Meatballs IV". This is my friend Wesley's all-time favorite movie, largely because he still has a thing about J.V. cheerleaders. As someone once said: "This is fine-more than fine-but as you get older you need to branch out. Whether you want to or not, society demands it".

"Gimme An F" has cinema's greatest J.V. cheerleader Mary Ann (played by Beth Miller), who looks like a sweet-faced Alicia Silverstone from before her "Clueless" days. Wesley hates Miller's other film, the horrific "Teen Wolf Too" made three years later, where she plays a fickle southern belle much like Martha Smith's character in "Animal House". Personally I admire Miller's range as the two characters could not be more different and she is convincing as both.

Anyway, Mary Ann is a naïve novice cheerleader from Moline (a member of "The Lucky Ducks" squad) who comes to Camp Beaverview for cheerleading instruction. She's befriended by Jenna (Karen Lee Kelly), the leader of the tough girl squad-appropriately named "The Demons". Jenna becomes protective of Mary Ann after her main rival takes an instant dislike to Mary Ann.

Later Mary Ann gets a crush on Tommy Hamilton, the head instructor. Tommy is spending his summer wrestling with the dilemma of having to grow up and move on, which is a problem as his only skills are teaching cheerleading and performing elaborate dance routines in the shower, for the enjoyment of viewers who get off on that sort of thing. Phoebe (Daphne Ashbrook) is Tommy's long-suffering girlfriend, she has a well-adjusted attitude and an experienced perspective. She even tolerates Tommy's flirtation with Mary Ann-trusting that Tommy will not actually take advantage of young Mary Ann.

While these four characters are solid and their relationships have a nice charm, the supporting cast is almost as weak as the material they have to work with. Which is a shame because had they brought some actual comic relief to the production it would have been a decent film. Jennifer Cooke plays Pam, a social climbing and terminally peppy instructor who is carrying on with camp's money-hungry owner Bucky. And there is another couple with a thing for the characters from "Mad Max". Since nothing is very funny you are left with only a cute semi-romance and some great dance routines.

An attempt is made to create some suspense by slowly leading up a final competition but unless this is your first movie experience the outcome is never in doubt. And there is a back-story about some Japanese businessmen Bucky wants to get money from, but it goes nowhere dramatically or comically.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Goofy, funny early-80s teen movie

A cult classic amongst my friends and I, this movie is hilarious and fun. Don't watch it too seriously, and you'll love it. The cheerleading aspect is cool to watch, and the jokes and pranks are funny. Slightly reminiscent of Porky's. And remember, "D is for Duck".

well since you asked so nicely, I'll give it to you

At Beaverview Cheerleading Camp, the goody-goody two shows Lucky Ducks cheerleading team must get in cahoots with the 'tough' bad girl cheerleading team of The Demons to beat the dastardly Falcon team who always seems to win at this camp I guess. This being a typical clichéd '80's teen (lame) sex comedy who do you think will win? But what the film lacks in originality it more than makes up for it sheer bloody awfulness. Oh and insanely bad dance numbers and the obligatory Japenese businessmen who want to buy the camp (on the condition that male cheerleader, Tommy Hamilton, stays with the camp of course). Simply awful, forgettable, and sadly has a surprising lack of nudity.

Where I saw it: HBO Comedy

My Grade: F (yup I did indeed give it to them)

I will give this an F!!!

I only wish there was a grade lower than F to give it! i scored it a 1 in the vote tally.I am grading this not even as a regular film, but as a T&A film, and this is the worst, lamest, crappiest and most awful movie i've seen.the acting, story and music are all terrible, not to mention there isn't even any nudity for the T&A connisuer.it's about a male cheerleader and the viewer is made to sit through many painful scenes of him doing cheers.avoid this piece of trash at all cost! this is the worst of bad 80's teen cinema.

Multi-racial teen offender...

Straight-laced young miss into gymnastics may have to sex-up her act in order to compete with the jiggly cheerleaders at Camp Beaver View, a summer spot for hormone-crazed kids which comes complete with a "Beaverteria". John Karlen (a decent actor) shamefully heads up an awkward cast of teenage no-names in this "Porky's"/"Flashdance"/"Footloose" hybrid--one with an overlay of summer camp hijinks which go back years in the movies, if not decades. Our heroine gets klutzy around cute guys, signaling to us that she's a virgin; meanwhile, down at the local sleaze-spot, two skinny boys dance with a trampy chick on-stage in a pantomime of ménage à trois (which is curiously accepted quite readily by the yuppie youths in the audience). Not very imaginative, and not the least bit amusing, "Gimme" must have been an embarrassment for 20th Century Fox--not to mention for the bare-breasted girls on-screen whose bodies are relentlessly exploited for the sake of the sniggering juveniles and underage peepers. NO STARS from ****

The kind of movie that gives America a bad name in film business.

This movie is too stupid for words. Even if you consider it to be a parody on movie-making, if you consider it to be completely camp, even than you're wasting your time watching it - for you've seen it a hundred times before. But maybe you are a big fan of high shrieking girl voices, you're still loving Barbie and Ken and you can stand this typical '80s electric guitar background noise... Well, than you'll have a chance.

Useful comment

This is on my TV right now... but only long enough for me to finish panning it in this comment. The previous comment let me know that this movie will not get any better, no matter how much I hope and pray. I will concur this movie is a colossal waste of my time, and would be of your time...it is not going to get any better! I can't believe this screenwriter is doing Atlas Shrugged! I hope he has improved a million-fold! I see some other credits on his resume that have had good reviews, but I'm still not convinced. If you are familiar with his work, please post something here, because I really want to see Atlas Shrugged, and would hate it if this guy turned it into the garbage that this movie turned out to be.

See it for the dance numbers!

If you are at all into the "dancey" style of cheerleading (there is some minor gymnastics involved in this movie), this movie cant be beat. It is obvious that the producers of this show wanted to show all aspects of cheerleading and really put some serious thought and money into the cheerleading numbers. The songs and routines seem to be highly original and are amazingly better than those than I have seen in actual High School/College cheerleading competitions (until the pyramid building/circus style became popular).

A broader recap: If you like to look at great looking girls who are talented, this is the movie to see. If you want some great acting and/or an interesting plot look elsewhere.

Not all that bad

Although this movie is like 18 years old, I just saw it for the first time. Honestly, I didn't think it was all that bad. I mean, sure, some of the acting was the pits, but what can we expect from a low budget 80's flick? This was just another one of those teen movies that mainly focused on sex and having fun. This movie isn't for everyone. Only those who appreciate a cheesy low budget movie need watch it. I give this movie a 7 out of 10 because really, it wasn't all that terrible!

This film is fantastic! You have to appreciate the badness.

Maybe you'd have to be a person who was born in the early 80's or late 70's, but this film is classic. So many comedic elements that are funny either because they're blatantly intended or just unintended. Any of the bad acting that occurs that have been mentioned in previous reviews is fantastic. If you're the type of person that can laugh at certain specific bad acting, timing, scripts, etc. then believe me, this is one of those movies that entails such humours. I can't believe I haven't seen this 80's flick yet. Most of them are so great, but this one tops the cake :P. I highly recommend watching it drunk when you're more likely to be more open and accepting, as the way humans should be. =D Enjoy.

One of the best 80s movies EVER

WOW! What a fantastic movie. I recently have seen this movie for the first time and I cant believe I missed it in the 80s. There is just so much that makes this movie fantastic. First of all the acting is spectacular. The range of emotion shown by these actors (who went on to become superstars) goes from happiness to love to anger to passion. Wow. The plot has you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Will she make her cartwheel at the end? OH MAN! I need to find out. The shower scene really makes this movie stand out from the crap movies of the 80s. Move over Sixteen Candles. Lastly, I found the lack of bare breasts to be refreshing. I wish more movies would including hip choreography instead of displaying bare breasts.

I give this movie a 10/10. If you ask me, when they say Gimme an F.. the F stand for Fantastic!

this is a cinematic masterpiece.

you know, these people that criticize this film for its lack of true humor, plot and skilled acting are really missing the wonder of this film. the donut smashing scene alone is enough to garner many a critical award, but honestly, the full on 80s dancing in the steamy wooden camp shower scene, replete with gawking big-haired 80s cheerleaders is enough to sit through the entire 120 minute viewing session on comedy central (alas, it hasn't been shown for years, either.) i really don't know where one can see this movie again, unless they buy it off of ebay, but its not a meatballs rip-off. its so much more than that. a guy dresses up in a viking outfit and passionately rips a weiner with his teeth for the love of god. its not even troma. is golden.

I love this movie

I saw this movie back in the 80's about a year after it came out once. Now, I think I have watched it at 2 dozen times, because I own it. I think the acting is great , especially for some of the 1st timers. I'm 47 and I was watching it last month and this 25 year old girl who lives w/ us to take care of me (I am disabled) was watching w/ me just got the biggest kick out of it. I explained in laymen's terms that it was a generic Bring It On movie plus all the sequels. She said considering how old it was ,that it was hilarious, and she could not stop laughing her ass off. I guess I watch it now once a month. I definitely give it an A +. I thought the shower scene was very inspiring for, you know who ? I thought the Demons were great. Also I have to say one of my top favorite parts was Bucky and Pam's gift. That is all I will say about that, but those that have seen it I am sure , that you know what I mean.

Dancing cheerleaders flunk out

My review was written in November 1984 after a mall screening in Boca Raton, Florida.

"Gimme an 'F'" unsuccessfully converts the once-popular cheerleaders exploitation film format ("The Cheerleaders" and "The Pom Pom GIrls" a decade or so ago) into an intended dance-oriented romp. Pic is unlikely to warrant a national release following its current regional bookings by distrib 20th Century Fox, and should play better on pay-cable.

Debuting feature director Paul Justman, who displays solid technical skills, has a meager premise to work with in Jim Hart's script. Story revolves around an annual clinic and competition for school cheerleading teams, held at Camp Beaver View, run by Bucky Berkshire, a/k/a Dr. Spirit" (John Karlen, hamming it up in the principal older-generation role). Berkshire, who is working on obtaining Japanese financial backing for a chain of boutiques, bets his top instructor Tom Hamilton (Stephen Shellen) $10,000 that he can't get the Moline Ducks squad to win over the powerhouse Fudge High Falcons. If he loses, Hamilton must work another five years for Berkshire.

Teen antics and sexcapades at the camp are extremely mild, with film erring in offering almost no nudity for its target youthful/drive-in audience. In keeping with the recent hit "Footloose", there is an interesting role reversal, in which lead Shellen dances sexily in his underwear in a shower while femme cat secretly watch voyeuristically.

Dance numbers are overproduced, with the Ducks' predictable blossoming from awkward, mousy types to sexpots on stage coming off as unbelievable. Also, the use of dance doubles for several of the lead players is obvious. Thesping is adequate in context and musical score serviceable.

Shame It's Been Deleated

A super cool movie about what it takes to be a cheerleader, amongst the bitchiness of the buisness,a total starless cast that pulls of my favourite movie of all time, shame the film was deleated 5 years ago,if you get a copy hang on to it,its a genuinine laugh a minute..

Tits jiggle and asses wiggle!

If viewing cheerleaders turns you no, then go watch a football game. You'd have none and buckleys chance of transforming "The Ducks" into a winning combination. However, filming such a movie as this would have been I guess - fascinating! Especially to be surrounded by numerous girls, which is hopefully why Mark Keyloun signed on for this idiocy. I, too, as an actor, would've done the same thing without regarding the consequences to follow afterwards. Perhaps, I may have never worked again in Hollywood, like most of this cast!

Gotta See This One!

Okay, I'm kidding, the film is a cheap "Meatballs" ripoff that's beyond bad. I had to see it because I went to junior high school with one of the female leads, a snotty actress who thought she was going to be the next Meryl Streep. This was as far as she ever got. I suspect she now thinks she did one movie too many. Hahahaha! Neener neener! That inside joke is the biggest laugh you'll get from this movie.
