Attempting to lose weight, Chief Roy goes on a crash diet that makes him more irascible than ever. During one of his arrests he's accused of police brutality, so he must defend his actions.
Roy enjoys spending time with old friend and fishing buddy Bill Peterson, but doesn't react well when Bill announces that he's gay. Roy is suddenly uncomfortable in his presence, but when he hears others making fun, he decides to do the right thing.
After he receives a $45,000 insurance check, Sergeant Baker is advised to invest in property. He proceeds to purchase a house next door to Jasper, in a white neighborhood.
Chief Mobey and Sergeant Baker apply for the same better-paying position in a neighboring county. The situation understandably leads to a rivalry between the two men.
Chief Roy feels liberated when he finally separates from his wife. Feeling like he is overdue for some fun, he becomes a swinging single, to his staff's consternation.
