You Can Thank This Classic '70s Anime For Studio Ghibli's Style
Image
Studio Ghibli is one of the most beloved animation studios of all time, foundational in the rise in popularity of anime both in Japan and internationally. Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata have been responsible for some of the best anime movies ever made, no matter what metric you use to judge that.

But as famous and popular as their work with Ghibli is, Takahata and Miyazaki's pre-Ghibli work is just as important. The duo (but particularly Takahata) had already established themselves as legends in their own right, with movies and TV shows that challenged what was thought possible at the time. They drew inspiration not just from Walt Disney's work, but also from French animation and the emerging Soviet landscape. They created something unique that continues to inspire animators (and live-action filmmakers) everywhere. I've already written about some of Miyazaki's pre-Ghibli work and how unique that work is, but there...

'It All Began With This': Studio Ghibli Reveals Rare 50-Year-Old Artwork in New My Neighbor Totoro Release
Image
In 1988, Studio Ghibli released My Neighbor Totoro -- a film that captured the heart of a generation and helped turn the studio into a household name in Japan and abroad. As a tribute to the movie's legacy, Ghibli is releasing a stunning "Image Board" collection, which includes the first Totoro concept art ever created.

Per PR Times, Iwanami Shoten's Complete Collection of Hayao Miyazaki Image Boards is a multi-volume series that collects 219 early concept and production drawings created by the titular director. Volume 3, titled Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Collection 3: My Neighbor Totoro, will be released worldwide on March 5, with Kinokuniya US handling the book's publication in North America. In addition to dozens of never-before-seen Totoro sketches and storyboards, this release contains the image that, according to Studio Ghibli President Toshio Suzuki, ultimately led to the making of My NeighborTotoro.

Anna Magnani Biopic ‘Anna’ Feting Iconic Italian Actress In Works At Italy’s Indiana Production
Image
Exclusive: A biopic devoted to legendary Italian Rome, Open City and The Rose Tattoo actress Anna Magnani is in development at Indiana Production, the Milan and Rome-based company behind Netflix’s upcoming period drama The Leopard.

Entitled Anna, the production will be directed by Alessio Cremonini (On My Skin), who is also co-writing the screenplay with actress Olivia Magnani, grand-daughter of the late actress and daughter of her only son Luca Magnani.

The feature will focus on Magnani in a pivotal period of her life between the late 1950s and early 1960s, when the actress’s son was coming of age and she was embracing a new role as a mother in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1962 drama Mamma Roma.

Filming for Anna is scheduled to begin in 2025, with casting in the early stages for the role of Magnani and the many other famous figures from Italy’s film and artistic...

Hayao Miyazaki's Pre-Studio Ghibli Movies Hint At The Master Director's Career To Come
Image
Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best animators of all time, and his work with Studio Ghibli includes some of the most beloved and acclaimed animated films in the history of the medium. The animator has helped change anime and animation so much that he refuses to permanently retire, choosing instead to deliver masterpiece after masterpiece and exploring different genres and tones, all while remaining true to his trademark themes and characters — determined heroines, magical realism, and anti-war messages. Miyazaki seems determined to continue working even if it means threatening the future of his studio after he's gone because he's yet to pick a successor.

While many people are familiar with Miyazaki's output with Studio Ghibli, not many know about his work prior to co-founding the studio with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. And yet, it is in that pre-Ghibli era that we find hints of the maestro that Miyazaki would become,...

The Boy And The Heron Is So Personal, Miyazaki Changed The Story When Tragedy Struck
Image
This article contains spoilers for "The Boy and the Heron."

As a prolific director and one of the co-founders of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki has become one of the biggest names in animation around the world, possibly the best-known name outside of Walt Disney himself. But it's easy to forget about the other names behind Studio Ghibli.

Studio Ghibli was founded by Miyazaki, fellow director Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki in 1985. By that point, the two directors had already spent 20 years working together. First, they worked on the financially disappointing yet hugely influential "The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun," as well as on Nippon Animation shows like "Heidi, Girl of the Alps," and "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother." It is a partnership that created a powerhouse in animation, and one that is at the heart of Miyazaki's latest (but no longer last) movie, "The Boy and the Heron.
