Catweazle (1970)

FAQ

Catweazle

FAQ

Nobody seems to know for certain why this was done, not even Bayldon, Richard Carpenter and certainly not Robin Davies (Carrot) who, after filming his final scenes for the first series, never heard back from the producers again.

One theory put forward by Carpenter was that LWT were trying to sell the show to an American Network and were trying to make changes to make it more appealing to them. They thought that having a more stereotyped British mansion house setting and all the trappings complete with a posh family might help it hence why so many changes were made. Another theory that Bayldon thought plausible was that the Carrot character and the farm setting was dropped in order to find a role for Gary Warren who had just finished filming the film 'The Railway Children' before series 2 of Catweazle went into production. The producers may have seen a rough cut of that film and realised it was probably going to be a massive hit (it was released theatrically the month before series 2 of Catweazle aired) and so wanted to capitalise on it's success by casting one of the actors.

It should be noted that a third series was discussed with Carpenter which would have picked up where Series 2 left off and had Catweazle find himself reunited with Carrot. However Bayldon felt the quality of the scripts were on the wane during series 2 and wanted to end the show on a high, and Carpenter agreed with him saying he had run out of ideas so the idea was eventually dropped.
