Originally announced in the end credits of Dr. Goldfuß und seine Biki-Maschine (1965) under the title "The Girl in the Glass Bikini," this effort was initially rejected by AIP, which added new footage featuring Boris Karloff and Susan Hart in a separate subplot involving Hiram Stokely, billed as 'The Corpse.' This is also apparent in Hart's bikini-clad ghost being superimposed into scenes featuring the original actors. The final release took place in April 1966, bringing the studio's popular Beach Party series to a close after just under three years.
Originally, this film was to star Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. However, Avalon wanted to appear in more serious roles and Funicello wanted to spend more time with her family.
This is the only "Beach Party" film that doesn't take place on a beach.
Buster Keaton was originally cast in the role of Chicken Feather and had played a similar character in a previous "Beach Party" entry, Pyjama-Party (1964), but died in February 1966. He was replaced by Benny Rubin. Bobbie Shaw Chance was also set to work with Keaton again, as she had before in Beach Blanket Bingo (1965).
J. Sinister Hulk appears in a monster costume during the film; it is the same costume seen in the AIP-TV production The Eye Creatures (1967) shot in Texas by writer-producer-director Larry Buchanan. There were other props from previous AIP releases in this film, as well as the spoof Dr. Goldfuß und seine Biki-Maschine (1965), which also featured the bikini-clad Susan Hart in a rare leading role.
