Eddie Redmayne in First Teaser for 'Day of the Jackal' Assassin Series
Image
"Who exactly is this man?" Peacock has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for an upcoming assassin thriller series titled The Day of the Jackal, yes indeed based on the book (and British movie) of the same name. The 1973 movie is also called The Day of the Jackal, starring Edward Fox, and it's adapted from the book by Frederick Forsyth. There's a 1997 Hollywood movie called The Jackal also about an assassin, though it's not an exact adaptation. The new series is a bold, contemporary re-imagining of the beloved and respected novel and film. While remaining true to the DNA of the original, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the life of the chameleon like "anti-hero" at the heart of the story, in a high octane, cinematic, globetrotting "cat & mouse" thriller, set amidst the turbulent geo-political landscape of our time. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne stars in this series as...

Donald Sutherlands Spy Thriller Is an Overlooked Masterpiece
Image
Donald Sutherland showcased versatility in roles with his chilling performance as a ruthless Nazi spy in Eye of the Needle. The film, set during WWII, features a villain protagonist driven by icy precision and determination. Eye of the Needle, based on Ken Follett's novel, was directed by Richard Marquand, who later directed Return of the Jedi.

Donald Sutherland had an uncanny ability to slip into a wide variety of genres and roles while remaining eminently recognizable. This was especially evident when he followed his Oscar-worthy performance as a grieving father in the 1980 drama film Ordinary People with a chilling performance as a ruthless Nazi spy in the 1981 spy film Eye of the Needle.

Set in the United Kingdom during World War II, between 1940 and 1944, Eye of the Needle presents Sutherlands character, Henry Faber, as a Nazi spy who is so resolute in his quest to successfully complete his mission...

Hit Man: All the Famous Killer Easter Eggs in New Glen Powell Movie
Image
This article contains spoilers for Hit Man.

“People are disappointed when they learn that hit men don’t really exist,” explains Gary Johnson. That might be a surprising statement given that it occurs early on in a movie called Hit Man. Throughout the film, Gary (Glen Powell) dons different disguises to meet with people who want to pay him money (or video games or boats) to kill people. But then again, it’s all a ruse, a police sting operation that mild-mannered teacher Gary does as a side gig.

As Gary explains, his job is to become the type of hitman that potential criminals imagine exists, so that he can embody that look and lure them into a state of safety. As smart as Gary certainly is, he doesn’t create these identities out of nothing. Rather he’s riffing on hired killers from pop culture history, which gives Powell...

Sky Boss Says Talks Still Ongoing on Warner Content Deal, Sets Out Commissioning Strategy
Image
Dana Strong, CEO of Comcast-owned Sky Group has promised customers of the U.K. media conglomerate will continue to receive Warner Bros Discovery content on Sky platforms, saying that discussions with the studio to extend their content agreement are ongoing.

“We’ve been a partner with Warner for a very long time,” said Strong, adding that they’re “in conversation” about the future of their deal.

The deal, which primarily covers HBO content such as “Succession” and “And Just Like That,” is set to expire next year. Given the rise of studio-owned streamers, at the beginning of the multi-year output deal it seemed it would be unlikely to be renewed, with Wbd focusing on funnelling exclusive content to its own streaming offering Max.

As the rollout of Max has floundered in some territories and the general streaming landscape has shifted, studios such as Disney and, presumably, Wbd, are instead...

Sky CEO Dana Strong Explains Why She Decided to “Double Down and Go Long” on Sports
Image
Comcast-owned European pay-tv, media and telecom giant Sky has made a full-court press to lock down sports rights longer-term due to the benefits of sports content, CEO Dana Strong told a London conference on Tuesday.

During a fireside chat at Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference, she was asked about Sky’s sports strategy. “I am pretty passionate about sport,” and Sky has “extraordinary strength” in the field, she said.

About 18-24 months ago, “we really decided to double down and go long on sport,” Strong shared. That has helped build “a strategic moat” around sports, she said. “Sport matters because it is resilient,” more so than other forms of linear TV. It matters to consumers and communities, she added.

Also, “we have a very, very sophisticated monetization machine for sport,” including pay-tv and streaming, Strong also argued. “Sky likes to be culturally relevant” and be part of “moments,...

UCP Developing Horror Reboot Of ‘The Munsters’
Image
Think The Munsters, but way more grim.

UCP is developing 1313, which has been described as a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse, aka a reimagining of the classic 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters.

Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to showrun the drama. The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.

Executive producers are Beer and Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Bisu is a co-exec producer.

The last time someone tried to dust off The Munsters for the small screen was in 2017, when NBC opted to reboot the comedy with Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman and Seth Meyers. The half-hour single-camera version was going to follow members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.

The LA Screenings Are Back: Talent Returns & Slates Get International As Buyers Head For Studio Showcases
Image
As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.

There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd). “We have an abundance of titles that run the gamut of broadcast and streaming in drama and comedy. We’ll be showing the best of what Wbd stands for.

How the LA Screenings Reflect a Changing TV Landscape
Image
When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.

It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.

Image
Money Heist alum Álvaro Morte explained the reason why he won’t be reprising The Professor in any spinoffs of hit Netflix drama, including Berlin.

For nearly a decade, Morte played Sergio Marquina/ The Professor in Money Heist, who was introduced to viewers as the brains and leader of the operation. He was last seen by fans during the series finale, where he successfully managed to pull off his complicated escape plan for their Bank of Spain heist. Speaking with GamesRadar+, the Spanish actor expressed his protectiveness over The Professor, confirming that he doesn’t really see himself making a cameo in Netflix’s prequel spinoff Berlin. "I don't think that I will be part of Berlin," he said. Laurence Fox Loses “Pedophiles” Libel Case in Latest Setback for British Actor: “I Feel Utterly Bereft and Totally Hopeless”
Image
British actor Laurence Fox has lost a libel case with two men he called pedophiles on social media after they had called the My Son Hunter star a racist.

On Monday, the High Court in the U.K. deemed that Fox had defamed Simon Blake, a former LGBT charity trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, on Twitter/X in October 2020, when he called them pedophiles over an escalating row over Black History Month.

The Guardian reports that the spat on X started, when Fox said he would boycott U.K. grocery store Sainsbury’s for supporting “racial segregation and discrimination” after the company said it would establish safe spaces for Black employees during Black History Month in October 2020. Blake and Crystal, whose real name is Colin Seymour, responded to Fox’s call for a boycott by calling him racist. Fox, in turn, replied...

‘The Shepherd’ Review (Disney+)
Image
Stars: Ben Radcliffe, John Travolta, Claire Price, Scarlet Grace, Iwan Bond, Simon Wilson, Millie Kent, Steven Mackintosh | Written and Directed by Iain Softley

I don’t usually cover shorts, I always seem to have more features to review than I do time, but I had to make an exception for The Shepherd. I remembered reading Frederick Forsyth’s novella when I was growing up, and a reading of it by the late Al Maitland has been a Christmas tradition on CBC radio since 1979. So, telling myself that since The Academy considers forty minutes to be feature length I finally used the Disney+ subscription my wife got us and checked it out.

Freddie is an Raf pilot stationed in Germany who wishes he was home for the holidays. He sees his chance when a fellow pilot is injured and can’t make his scheduled flight to England. Despite only recently qualifying...

‘Poor Things’ Host Hungary Anticipates Continuing Production Boom After SAG-AFTRA Strike Settles
Image
With the resolution of the Hollywood writers strike in September, hopes were high for a return to business as usual in bustling Budapest, host to such recent high-profile productions as Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice sensation and Oscar frontrunner “Poor Things.” But the sudden breakdown in negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP in early October dampened that enthusiasm.

“We were starting to get momentum back, which was leading us to believe that we would be opening up offices on new shows in early November, on the assumption that the strike would be over by the end of October,” says Adam Goodman of Mid Atlantic Films, which is currently servicing Peacock and Sky’s spy series “The Day of the Jackal.”

Instead, a waiting game is playing out in studios and C-suites across the globe, as actors, talent reps, executives and other industry players not only try to hash out a blueprint for...

Martin Scorsese Reveals Ideal Double Features For His Movies In Annotated Companion Films List
Image
Scorsese's Letterboxd list reveals his love for cinema, featuring companion movies from a wide range of genres and time periods. The list demonstrates Scorsese's role as a scholar of film, with many obscure choices that show his depth of knowledge. The cinematic elements in Scorsese's latest epic, Killers of the Flower Moon, reflect his passion for classic works and his ability to reimagine them.

Martin Scorsese details which films are the ideal double-features for his movies in his Letterboxd list. The auteur filmmaker directed his first feature movie, Who’s That Knocking at My Door, in 1967. Since then, Scorsese created more copious iconic epics and features, including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Wolf of Wall Street, and most recently, Killers of the Flower Moon, which is currently in theaters.

Taking to Letterboxd, Scorsese reveals an annotated list of the best companion movies to his work. The list included titles across nearly a century of cinema,...

Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Martin Scorsese Joins Letterboxd, Shares List of ‘Companion Films’ to His Entire Filmography
Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Martin Scorsese now has a Letterboxd profile, and he took the opportunity to list companion films for every movie he’s ever made on the social media platform for cinephiles.

“I love the idea of putting different films together into one program. I grew up seeing double features, programs in repertory houses, evenings of avant-garde films in storefront theatres,” he wrote on his Companion Films page. “You always learn something, see something in a new light, because every movie is in conversation with every other movie. The greater difference between the pictures, the better.”

For his latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon” adapted from David Grann’s best-selling book, Scorses suggested it be paired with “The Heiress” (1949), “The Last of the Line” (1914), “The Lady of the Dugout” (1918), “Blood on the Moon” (1948), “Red River” (1948) and “Wild River” (1960).

For “Goodfellas” (1990), Scorsese listed “Ocean’s Eleven” (1960) and “Jules and Jim” (1962).

The full list contains almost 60 films.
