The film was based on the early vampire Gothic novella "Carmilla," written by Sheridan Le Fanu and published in 1871. Hammer Studios made Vampire Lover (1970) two years before based on the same novel.
The Anchor Bay release of the film is in English, also dubbed in English to clean up the Spanish accents of the actors attempting English throughout.
The film opens with a quote cited from the Greek philosopher Plato. It reads: "The good ones are those who are content to dream what the wicked actually practice."
Filmed in Galician lands in Spain, it was massacred by censorship due to its nude scenes that were cut and not seen in Spain-the full version could only be seen abroad-as well as some disturbingly murky conversations. Therefore rectification on the previous comment.
