FAQ

No, it was released in the theatre. It was never an ABC Movie-of-the-Week as some people claim.

The plot is generally the same. However, the Kinsolving place is a big house on the river rather than a country estate. In the book, the action takes place in Ohio and the surrounding area is flooded, thereby trapping everyone in the house rather than a blizzard. Kenny is a drug runner in the book rather than a rapist as in the movie.

Some of the dialogue is taken directly from the book, however.

The house is in Duluth, MN. All of the interior and exterior scenes were filmed at Glensheen Mansion, an estate built by mining magnate Chester Congdon between 1905 and 1908, which sits on Lake Superior. The scene in which Francesca is walking up to the house is actually the lake-facing side of the house. It is a terrace that runs the length of the house and leads down to gardens in the lawn below. None of the interiors or exteriors are sets.

Today, the house appears as it did in the film. Chester Congdon's estate stipulated that his children be allowed to live in Glensheen as long as they wanted, at which point it would be donated to the University of Minnesota Duluth, which today continues to maintain and operate it as a museum. The furniture you see in the film, with the exception of various plot-specific props, are all still in the home. It can be toured by the public and the film is even discussed briefly on the tour.

Yes. Given better plowing techniques, it's more difficult to be snowed in to this extent nowadays. But, in rural Minnesota, the weather can get very bad in the winter.

Very probably. But there is very little information on the film.

Her son, Sean Astin, was born in February 1971. She probably wasn't pregnant as the filming was completed while the mansion's resident, Elisabeth Congdon, wintered in Tucson, Arizona from Christmas through Easter, so the filming likely took place in January 1972 for its October release.

But, she had obviously gotten some experience in preparing for the role.
