- Ku Shen Chai: Have you seen Miss Yang, the lady who lives here?
- General Shih Wen-chiao: No, I'm blind.
- Ku Shen Chai: Forgive me.
- General Shih Wen-chiao: Miss Yang and her mother are gone.
- Ku Shen Chai: Mr. Shih! She said you should run for your life too. Do you know where she went?
- General Shih Wen-chiao: No.
- Ku Shen Chai: I have to find her!
- [Shih pulls out a sword as two soldiers fly down from the sky and attack, but are quickly killed in a few brief strokes of the sword]
- Ku Shen Chai: Mr. Shih! Mr. Shih, who are you really?
- General Shih Wen-chiao: I'm not blind, that's for sure.
- Shen Chai's Mother: Why study if not to be an official?
- Ku Shen Chai: I study for the knowledge.
- Shen Chai's Mother: But you don't seem to know anything!
- Ku Shen Chai: Mother, who is she?
- Shen Chai's Mother: Our new neighbor. You scared her to death last night!
- Ku Shen Chai: She scared me too! She must be awfully brave to live there alone.
- Shen Chai's Mother: She lives here for the same reason we do: no rent!
- Yang Hui-ching: I stayed at the temple for two years. Abbot Hui-yuan taught me various martial arts. Yet even in this vast world, there's no safe place for us.
- Yang Hui-ching: [singing] A jug of wine amid the flowers, Having no company, I drink alone, Raising my cup I beckon to the moon, With my shadow we form a company of three, Alas, the moon does not drink, And my shadow merely follows along behind me, But for now I make the most of their company, Enjoying Spring while it is here, The moon sways to my song, My shadow mimics my dance, While sober we happily blend, Once drunk we go our separate ways, Let us guard forever this unfettered friendship, And rendezvous beyond the distant Milky Way.
- Ku Shen Chai: You're wanted! The Eastern Depot is after you. What do you plan to do?
- Yang Hui-ching: I won't sit around waiting to be killed.
- Yang Hui-ching: You'd better go.
- Ku Shen Chai: I can't just leave you all alone.
- Yang Hui-ching: Why not?
- Ku Shen Chai: We're practically husband and wife. We should join forces.
- Yang Hui-ching: That's all over. Don't mention it again.
- Ku Shen Chai: Then just think of me as a friend who wants to help.
- Yang Hui-ching: [laughs] This is a fight to the death. I'm afraid you overestimate your abilities.
