While parked on the Old North Road in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, teenagers Steve Andrews (Steve McQueen) and his girlfriend Jane Martin (Aneta Corsaut) witness a meteorite landing. Before they can find the site, however, they come upon an old-timer (Olin Howland) with what looks like a blob of jelly on his arm. Soon, the Blob begins to grow larger until it eventually terrorizes the town.

The Blob is based on a idea by Irvine H. Millgate. The idea was made into a screenplay by American screenwriters Theodore Simonson and Kay Linaker. A sequel, Beware! The Blob (1972), followed in 1972. A remake, also titled Der Blob (1988), was released in 1988, and a second remake, The Blob (2016), is supposedly in pre-production but with no certain release date.

The address is Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460 United States. During the month of July, the theatre holds a BlobFest where its patrons have a Blob running out of the cinema to re-enact the film's scene. In the faith of the era of 1950s, vintage cars, costumes, music etc. are used to give the occasion an authentic touch.

The scene is from the silent Dementia (1955), re-released as Daughter of Horror with narration added. It is featured on the double bill marquee with Mother Riley Meets the Vampire (1952), also released as My Son, the Vampire and Vampire Over London, with Bela Lugosi. Lugosi is not in Daughter of Horror. Presumably, the marquee just didn't have enough space to fit in the second movie title.

Trichloracetic acid (TCAA) is basically acetic acid (as in vinegar) in which the three hydrogen atoms of the methyl group have been replaced by chlorine atoms. TCAA was commonly used at one time for the removal of warts.

When dropping a live powerline on it fails to stop the Blob, now so large that it enulfs the diner in which Steve, Jane, Jane's little brother Danny (Keith Almoney), the diner manager (Vincent Barbi), and a waitress are trapped, the manager grabs a fire extinguisher and attempts to put it out several fires that have started. Steve notices the Blob recoiling from the carbon dioxide (CO2), remembers how it also retreated when they hid in the walk-in refrigerator at the grocery store, and surmises that the Blob cannot stand the cold. He contacts Lt Dave (Earl Rowe) on the open telephone line with the information, and Jane's father, Principal Martin (Elbert Smith), takes Steve's friends to the high school where they are able to round up about 20 more extinguishers. They use the extinguishers first to clear the Blob away from the diner windows so that Steve, Jane, and the others can crawl out, then they contain the Blob by freezing it solid. Dave requests an Air Force Globemaster to transport the Blob to the Arctic. The final scene shows the Blob being parachuted down onto the icecap where it will remain frozen as long as the Arctic stays cold.
