Roku’s Streaming Platform ‘Howdy’ Is Here: The First 5 Shows You Should Binge
Image
The world of streaming never stops surprising viewers. Just when it feels like every option has already been tried and tested, another one quietly slips in with something fresh. Roku has now entered the ring with a new service called Howdy. At first glance, it might look like another low-key platform, but it’s already grabbing attention for one reason—affordability.

For just $2.99 a month, Howdy hands over a catalog filled with hundreds of movies and TV shows, all completely ad-free. That makes it a smooth alternative to the usual free but ad-heavy picks like Tubi or the Roku Channel. And while plenty of streaming services throw around endless titles, Howdy’s library hides some gems that are worth pressing play on right away. Here are five of the most bingeable shows now sitting on its shelf.

This Classic Chuck Connors Series On Prime Video Is A Must-Watch For Western Fans
Image
Westerns are having another moment in the sun lately, and you can see evidence of it all over the various streaming services people use the most. Titles like "Gunsmoke" are cracking the Nielsen Top 10 rankings decades after they went off the air, and viewers are more tapped into the genre than they've been in years. But, there's an underrated Western series that people might have missed in their quest to find the next "Bonanza" or "Yellowstone" out there. If you love cowboy tales, you need to check out "The Rifleman" starring Chuck Connors over on Prime Video, as it's an essential show for the genre on TV, and it doesn't get as much love as its slightly more popular contemporaries.

Chuck Connors is the name at the top of the marquee for "The Rifleman," and he played Lucas McCain for five seasons on ABC starting in 1958. His character was a Union American Civil War veteran,...

Outstanding Sci-Fi, Western, Procedural or Action Series? Maybe It’s Time to Bring Back the Genre Emmys
Image
I’ll say it upfront: We don’t need more Emmy categories. Between the two Creative Arts Emmy Awards and the Primetime ceremony, there are already 123 awards set to be handed out next month. And that’s just from the L.A.-based TV Academy; New York’s NATAS passes out hundreds more in daytime, children’s & family, news, sports and more. And then there are the local Emmy chapters all over the country, handing out trophies as well.

We live in Peak Emmy times. So take this all with a grain of salt: I do wonder if the 1950s Academy was onto something when it recognized certain scripted genres.

Back during the original Golden Age of Television — generally considered the mid-to-late 1950s — the then-infant medium fielded so many series (and on just three networks!) that the Emmys for scripted series were not just divided into comedy and drama. In...

Michael Madsen’s Accusation Against Estranged Wife Before His Death: How Did His 26-Year-Old Son Die?
Image
Michael Madsen, who died of cardiac arrest on July 3 in Malibu at age 67, probably spent his final months entangled in a painful web of loss, regret, and deeply personal accusations. Just months before his death, the Reservoir Dogs star filed for divorce from his wife of 28 years, accusing her in 2024 of having “driven” their 26-year-old son to s*icide due to “neglect, drinking, and alcoholism”. According to People’s report, the accusations were contained in a court document later contradicted by Madsen himself.

Madsen’s son, Hudson, a U.S. Army sergeant who served in Afghanistan, reportedly took his own life in Hawaii on January 25, 2022. The actor later recanted the claim publicly on Instagram, stating, “She had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to our son.” Yet the damage, personal and emotional, had already been done. Madsen’s death leaves behind six kids, three fractured marriages, and a grieving family still haunted by unanswered questions.

10 Best Western Series Streaming Right Now
Image
More than 60 years after shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke aired on television, westerns and neo-westerns are once again popular amongst audiences. But, with so many options now available on TV and online, it may be difficult to choose which series to watch.

Today’s best westerns (not to be confused with the hotel chain) capture the feel of early entries in the genre while staying relevant by incorporating modern dialogue and sociopolitical topics. This has allowed the genre to reach a wider variety of viewers than it might have otherwise done in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Wynonna Earp Brings Supernatural Elements to the Western Genre 2016-2021, Streaming on Netflix

Far from taking a traditional western approach, Wynonna Earp focuses on a descendant of lawman Wyatt Earp as she faces supernatural foes in her hometown of Purgatory. Another key character is the notorious Doc Holliday, who is played by Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon.

Reboot For “The Gunfighter”
20th Century Studios will finance a live-action remake of director Henry King’s 1950 ‘Old West’ feature “The Gunfighter”, for producer Ethan Hawke, paving the way for a resurgence in ‘gun’ movies, including reboots of “Gunsmoke” and “The Rifleman”:

“…in ‘The Gunfighter’ (1950), starring actor Gregory Peck, a young, reckless cowboy named ‘Eddie’ deliberately provokes an argument with notorious gunfighter ‘Jimmy Ringo’, who is widely known as the fastest draw in the West, making him the perpetual target of every young gunslinger eager to become famous as ‘the man who shot Ringo’.

“When Eddie draws his pistol, Ringo has no choice but to kill him. Eddie's three brothers seek revenge and pursue Ringo as he leaves town.

“Ringo ambushes and disarms them, then drives off their horses. He tells them to walk back to town; instead, they obtain fresh horses from a nearby stable and resume their pursuit…”

Where Was Gilligan's Island Filmed? Every Major Location, Revealed
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Enterprising fans of Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" have figured out more or less where the "Island" might be in the Pacific Ocean. Using Hawai'i as a starting point, and including known information about the make and model of the S.S. Minnow, certain viewers on Reddit have tried to calculate how far such a boat could have drifted during a three-hour tour. Some have even incorporated known tropical storm wind speeds and the fastest a non-operational ship could have drifted in the Pacific to locate Gilligan's desert isle. One calculation puts the island about two-thirds of the way to Midway Island from Hawai'i. Those calculations, however, are based on a lot of unspoken assumptions.

Much easier to figure out are the locations of the "Gilligan's Island," as complete records exist on the show's high-profile production. Most of "Gilligan's Island...

Chuck Connors' 10 Best Western Movies & TV Shows
Image
Chuck Connors was a well-known figure in Hollywood, celebrated for his commanding presence, rugged appearance, and ability to portray some of the greatest Western characters with strong moral values. Although he received recognition in various genres, he was most famous for his work in some of the best Western TV shows and films of his era. His expertise in portraying intricate characters, often torn between the concepts of violence and justice, set him apart in Western narratives that typically revolved around themes of loyalty and survival.

One of Connors' most memorable roles was playing Lucas McCain in The Rifleman, where he portrayed a widowed rancher and sharpshooter. His extensive work in the Western genre included a wide range of characters, from cowboys and soldiers to reformed outlaws seeking redemption. Whether dominating the screen in action-packed plots or embodying plucky protagonists dealing with personal struggles, Connors brought a sense of seriousness and integrity to his performances,...

This Chuck Connors Western Show Is The Perfect Replacement For The Rifleman
Image
The Rifleman may be Chuck Connors' claim to fame and his greatest contribution to the genre, but it's not the only Western show he made that's worth watching. In addition to his very successful, five-season stint as Lucas McCain in the hit ABC series, Connors starred in a different Western show titled Branded. Of course, it never achieved the reputation of The Rifleman.

Though Chuck Connors appeared in some memorable Western movies like The Big Country, he was never recognized as an A-list actor or a headline attraction in feature films. Rather, Connors was known mostly for his TV work, specifically his role in The Rifleman. The Riflleman's status as one of the most popular Western shows of the late 1950s and early 1960s helped make Connors a household name at the time. Unfortunately, it didn't have the lengthy run achieved by other classic Western TV shows, such as Gunsmoke or Bonanza.

Leave It To Beaver Cast: Which Actors Are Still Alive
Image
Leave It to Beaver was a groundbreaking sitcom from the 1950s, setting the stage for future family-friendly series. Key cast members, like Jerry Mathers (Beaver) and Tony Dow (Wally), found continued success in TV after the show. Some cast members, like Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell), struggled with typecasting but later found success in other shows.

Remembered as one of the seminal sitcoms from the early days of television, the Leave It to Beaver cast had a massive impact on popular culture. The show aired for six seasons starting in 1957, and it became a cultural touchstone for the late-'50 and early-'60s. Though incredibly simplistic compared to modern sitcoms, Leave It to Beaver blazed the trail for the genre and was often imitated in the ensuing decades. A true syndication hit, the series found its greatest popularity when it began to play in syndication.

Leave It to Beaver chronicled the adolescent life of its titular character,...

The Radio Announcer On Gilligan's Island Is A Familiar Face For Star Trek Fans
Image
In the "Star Trek" episode "Spectre of the Gun", the U.S.S. Enterprise attempts to make contact with a xenophobic species of psychics called the Melkotians. When Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew beam to the surface, they are instantly told by a Melkotian that they are trespassing and will be punished. The Melkotian teleports them, bizarrely, to an abstract Old West village where the buildings have no walls. This is an extrapolation of Tombstone, Arizona. Kirk and company find themselves standing in for specific fighters at the notorious Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and are clearly expected to face off against Wyatt Earp (Ron Soble), Morgan Earp (Rex Holman), and Virgil Earp (William Maxwell).

Luckily, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) discovers that the laws of physics in this bizarre Old West mindscape don't operate the same as in real life, leading him to conclude that it's all an illusion.

This Hit Western Show Was Actually a Spin-Off
Image
There have been plenty of hit TV shows that have either been direct spin-offs of already existing characters or have had backdoor pilots air as lone stories in anthology series the latter being true for the hit '50s and '60s Western series The Rifleman, a spin-off of Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre. And while The Rifleman wasn't exactly Bonanza or Gunsmoke, it was a hit program that stood on its own amid the Western film and TV boom of its day and age.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999): Gone But Not Forgotten
Raumschiff Enterprise (1966)
I love Star Trek. It’s one of the most unique fandoms since it features multiple different properties in the same universe. Don’t get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but something about Star Trek that raises it to another level. There are so many shows that are unique in their own way. You have Star Trek T.O.S, Star Trek The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Picard.

The point is that there is something for everyone. Fans are a little bit less toxic than other fandoms. My theory is that because there are so many shows there is at least one show that everyone can agree is good. So if someone were to, let’s say, hate Prodigy,...

The Mannequins in This PG-Rated Horror Movie Will Traumatize You
Image
In the late 1970s, horror's slasher boom started thanks to big hits like Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974 and John Carpenter's Halloween in 1978. The fad really took off in the 80s with Friday the 13th and its infinite clones, but stuck in the middle was a little horror movie from 1979 called Tourist Trap. Starring The Rifleman's Chuck Connors and Tanya Roberts from Charlie's Angels, Tourist Trap looks like just another slasher on the surface with yet another plot about a creepy guy in a mask killing young women. It only takes five minutes into the runtime, however, to discover that this slasher isn't one at all. Instead, it is a truly frightening horror film that includes telekinesis and the creepiest mannequins you'll ever discover. And it did it all with a PG rating.

How A '50s Western Series Laid The Groundwork For Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Image
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" isn't quite like any other "Star Trek" show, and when it debuted in 1993, it was quite the departure from both the original series and "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Instead of following intrepid explorers on starships trekking across the galaxy, "Deep Space Nine" followed the stories of the people who lived on board the space station Deep Space Nine (DS9) — civilians, Bajoran militia, and Starfleet officers alike. Showrunner Rick Berman was in charge of taking the "Star Trek" universe in a new direction following the success of "The Next Generation," but he ended up looking to a rather old television series for inspiration.

In an interview with StarTrek.com, Berman explained the inspiration behind "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and revealed that he and writer/producer Michael Piller got their biggest idea from a classic 1950s Western. That's pretty great given the fact that "Star Trek...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Leave It To Beaver
Image
Few TV shows define the early days of the medium like "Leave it to Beaver." Over six decades after it began airing, the idyllic family sitcom isn't just synonymous with 1950s television, but 1950s America as a whole. While its white picket fence dreams have never been reflective of the real world, the show still functions as a gentle comedic escape from reality for many a classic TV fan.

As one of the oldest culturally significant TV shows still in syndication, it's impossible to watch "Leave It To Beaver" without wondering what became of the cheerful bunch of actors populating its sunny suburban world. Unfortunately, the considerable passage of time means that most of the actors involved in the series have died, but there are still three main actors — all of them former child stars — who are carving out paths for themselves in a post-"Leave it to Beaver" world.

10 Classic Old Western TV Shows That Still Hold Up Today
Image
Many classic Western TV shows, such as Alias Smith and Jones, Wagon Train, and Rawhide, still entertain audiences today. These shows offer an engaging and enlightening portrayal of the Old West while remaining entertaining. The characters and storylines of shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke have made them iconic and enduring favorites.

Many classic Western TV shows still hold up when watched today. While the genre hit its peak on the small screen many decades ago, it has stood strong over the years, with shows such as Justified, Yellowstone, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves bringing it back into the spotlight. Looking back, though, some of the most iconic Westerns were the original shows that popularized the genre on television. The heart and humor they injected into the oftentimes harsh Old West setting drew audiences in and kept them there for many seasons.

Westerns can have a tough time holding up, as...

Hogan played Pfc Kirby on 111 episodes of the long-running drama opposite Rick Jason, Vic Morrow and Pierre Jalbert. Robert Altman directed many episodes of the show, which was on the air from 1962-1967. It was not unfamiliar terrain: Hogan had been a staff sergeant in Japan during the Korean War.

10 Best Western TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Westerns have been a popular genre on American television for decades, with some shows standing out for their quality and lasting impact. Modern Westerns are adding their own twist to the classic genre, with increased drama and stakes while maintaining the Old West feel. Shows like The Rifleman, The Wild Wild West, Godless, Westworld, Gunsmoke, Deadwood, Bonanza, Yellowstone, Wanted Dead or Alive, and Justified deserve recognition for their timeless appeal and unique storytelling.

The Western genre has long been a staple of American television, but some Westerns rank much more highly than others in terms of quality and staying power. Shows following the lives of cowboys, ranchers, bounty hunters, and cattle drivers have entertained viewers for decades and show no signs of slowing down. The Old West is an era that is fascinating to watch shows about, as it feels far removed from the present. Although there are issues to...

Whatever Happened to ‘The Rifleman’ Remake?
Image
The Western genre has evolved over time as filmmakers find new ways to approach these classic stories. Westerns have been popular ever since the 1930s, but in recent years, they’ve been particularly popular on television. Western-centric shows like Yellowstone, Westworld, Justified, and Deadwood, among others, have shown that there are still stories worth telling about the Wild West; it just takes a talented group of storytellers to find a way to modernize the material. Given the popularity of television Westerns in recent years, a reboot of the classic gunslinger adventure serial The Rifleman seems like it would be a perfect way to capitalize on the craze. However, a proposed reboot of The Rifleman is one of the many projects that have yet to emerge from development hell.

Production Designer Jack Fisk Is Picky — but ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Was an Easy Yes
Image
No production designer has created more iconic, gorgeous outdoor imagery than Jack Fisk, whose 50-year filmography is filled with classics — “Days of Heaven,” “The Tree of Life,” “Mulholland Drive,” “There Will Be Blood,” and “The Revenant” represent just a fraction of his output. Yet according to Fisk, a “well-designed” film is not his goal. “I always lean more toward a documentary style,” he told IndieWire. “I love the idea of telling a story that will not only sell popcorn, but give you information.”

Fisk’s latest project, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” provided just that kind of opportunity, with director Martin Scorsese telling the true story behind a series of murders committed in the Osage Nation in the 1920s after oil was discovered on tribal land. “Marty really wanted to tell it from the Osage point of view,” Fisk said. “He wanted it to be truthful and fair, and that...

Now That Everyone Has a Fast Channel, Here’s How You Can in 6 Easy Steps
Image
This is what a gold rush looks like: With channels dedicated completely to “Heartland,” “The Rifleman,” and individual “Big Brother” 24/7 camera feeds, there are approximately 1,683 unique, free, ad-supported streaming television channels in the U.S. as of September 15, according to Stream Metrics. According to us, that’s a few too many. But we got here so quickly because ad revenue is more lucrative than subscriptions — and because creating a Fast channel is, well, fast.

Frequency, a company dedicated to the care and feeding of Fast channels, recently launched 50 channels for a customer on a major distributor. CEO Blair Harrison wouldn’t name the companies, citing confidentiality agreements, but told IndieWire that completing all 50 took “about a month,” with most of that time going to the contracts. Barring legal complications, he said, his company can stand up a Fast channel in about a week.

A second source from a major Fast...

Deep Space Nine Made Star Trek a 'Real' Franchise
Image
Star Trek defied the odds with a successful reboot in The Next Generation, but Deep Space Nine made it a franchise. DS9 was unlike any show before it, and it pushed the possibilities of what a Star Trek series could be. There were problems, but in spite of them, Deep Space Nine is seen as a high-point for Star Trek storytelling.

When franchise creator Gene Roddenberry resurrected his spacefaring series 20 years after the initial pilot debuted, he defied the odds. However, it was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the third series set in this universe, that made it a "real" franchise. The fourth series in the universe, DS9 didn't just prove The Next Generation wasn't a fluke -- it showed that Star Trek had a future beyond the starship Enterprise.

The show also continued a trend among the fanbase, whereby a new installment was heavily criticized and not appreciated until many years after its debut.

Only One John Carpenter Movie Ever Won An Oscar (And You've Probably Never Heard Of It)
Image
John Carpenter may not be a real-life carpenter, but he sure has built himself a legacy. It's just one made of movies, not wooden sticks.

Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. "Halloween" may not have invented the slasher genre, but it defined it. "The Thing" may not have invented gory monster effects, but it raised the bar and few films have even nudged it in the decades that followed. "Big Trouble in Little China" is one of the most subversive films of the 1980s, tearing down the whole "badass" genre of cinema by placing a musclebound white American hero in the center stage and then revealing him to be nothing more than a comic relief sidekick in a story about Chinese mythology that he's too damned ignorant to comprehend. And We could go on.

The Masks' Director Made Twilight Zone History In More Ways Than One
Image
In the fifth season episode of "The Twilight Zone," called "The Masks", an elderly millionaire named Jason Foster (Robert Keith) has gathered his daughter, her husband, and their two adult children for a Mardi Gras gathering. Jason, attended by his doctor (Willis Bouchey), is dying. He expects he'll be dead by morning. Jason also hates his daughter and her family. He sees Emily (Virginia Gregg) as spineless, her husband Wilfred (Milton Seltzer) as greedy, her son Wilfred, Jr. (Alan Sues) as dumb and oafish, and her daughter Paula (Brooke Hayward) as vain and shallow.

At dinner, the family members all feign politeness, but the audience trusts Jason when he says they are all terrible people who are only interested in inheriting his fortune. After dinner, Jason calls the quartet into the drawing room for a Mardi Gras game. The patriarch has commissioned five expressive, full-face masks that he and his family are to wear.

James Coburn Knew That Less Was More With His Magnificent Seven Role
Image
At this point, it would be hard not to know the story of "The Magnificent Seven," even if you've never seen the original 1960 Western classic. Of course, that's in large part due to the fact that the film itself was a remake of another classic, "Seven Samurai."

It's a story that's been told time and again, decade after decade: a small town is in trouble, being threatened by villains, and the townsfolk need to recruit hardened fighters to help them defend their land. Enter a group of misfit hired guns who protect the village, while at the same time helping the villagers learn how to protect themselves. You've seen the story repeated in "A Bug's Life," and "The Three Amigos," and even in an episode of "The Mandalorian."

But when it comes to Americanized versions of "Seven Samurai," it's hard to argue that anyone has done it better than director...
