Z do Caixo (Jos Mojica Marins), known as Coffin Joe to the Anglo-speaking world, is the top hap-hatted, amoral ghoul just as famous as Freddy Krueger or Jason Vorhees but you've probably never heard of him. New horror movies are headed to Shudder next month, including horror anthology Satanic Hispanics and tense Australian horror movie You’ll Never Find Me. And that doesn’t even touch on the repertory additions, including rare ’90s gem Ghostwatch.

Look for Satanic Hispanics to arrive on Shudder on March 8. The horror movie assembles five tales of terror from Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), and Demian Rugna (When Evil Lurks, Terrified) unite in the first all-Latino horror anthology.

An isolated man living at the back of a desolate caravan park is visited by a desperate young woman seeking shelter from a violent storm in You’ll Never Find Me. As the savage storm worsens, these solitary souls begin to feel threatened – but who should really be afraid? Find out on March 22.

Writer, director, and actor José Mojica Marins singlehandedly inaugurated Brazilian horror cinema in 1964 when he released At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. This surprisingly gruesome gothic concoction introduced unsuspecting audiences to the indelible figure of Coffin Joe, a nefarious undertaker with a black top hat and cape, uncannily long fingernails, and a bloodthirsty life philosophy that’s part Friedrich Nietzsche, part Marquis de Sade. Over the next four decades, Coffin Joe would not only headline his own official trilogy but also turn up as a sometimes secondary character in numerous other films and TV shows, ultimately achieving the status of a national icon often called “the Brazilian Freddy Krueger.”

Brazilian horror legend José Mojica Marins passed away in 2020, and a few months ago Arrow Video announced that they’re honoring the memory of “The Master” by bringing ten of his films to Blu-ray in a limited edition collector’s set that’s packed with special features! The original street date for the set, which is called Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe, was in November, but it has since moved to January 15th. Copies can be pre-ordered through the Arrow Video website. Copies are also available through Amazon, Zavvi, and hmv in the UK and DiabolikDVD, Grindhouse Video, and Zavvi in North America. Considered by many to be “Brazil’s Freddy Krueger,” the horror icon known as Coffin Joe was played by the late José Mojica Marins, who wrote, directed and starred in a series of outrageous movies from 1964 to 2008. They’re collected together for an Arrow Video Blu-ray set that was announced earlier this year, fittingly titled Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe.

The 6-disc Blu-ray set will be available on Blu-ray and available to stream on Arrow from January 15, 2024, and you can exclusively watch the official trailer down below!

As a fan of extreme horror - both in tone and gross-outs - I have been keeping a close eye on The Profane Exhibit. The anthology of extreme horror will include segments directed by a collection of internationally renown filmmakers like Sergio Stivaletti (Dellamorte Dellamore), Coffin Joe (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), and Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) who returns to horror after over twenty years. 

Each segment will be introduced by a different person, known collectively as the Gentlemen (regardless of gender), storytellers from important moments in horror history. Previously announced Gentlemen include Bai Ling (The Crow, Dumplings) and Tony Todd (Candyman). Joining that list are Laurence Harvey and Christina Lindberg.

2012 was a banner year for horror-themed music, and a hell-ton of amazing visuals to accompany it. So much of it, in fact, that I decided to devote an entire article to my favorite creepy music videos of the year. This list (which is alphabetical and not necessarily in order of preference) runs the spectrum from dark comedy and satire to loving twists on classic horror flicks... along with a few entries that defy all description, a couple that might give you nightmares, and one in particular that will shock all but the most jaded gore fiends and send just about everyone else screaming into the night. Amanda Palmer: “Killing Type” Known to gothic rock fans as the singer for the Dresden Dolls (and to everyone else as Mrs. Neil Gaiman), Palmer holds nothing back when it comes to expressing herself.

Acclaimed UK garage-funk-rock combo The Heavy (whom you probably remember from their runaway hit single “How You Like Me Now?”) decided to pay tribute to old-school horror in their new music video for “Can't Play Dead,” the latest single from their third full-length album The Glorious Dead. Using surreal stop-motion techniques reminiscent of the Brothers Quay with a touch of Tim Burton's macabre mischief, director Jason Willis created an homage to a half-dozen horror films, including Ed Wood's Plan Nine from Outer Space, the silent classic Nosferatu, the original Phantasm and even the Brazilian cult classic At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul. The clip depicts a creepy sorceress using voodoo dolls, magic potions and other occult goodies to raise a surprisingly well-dressed corpse while the band's skeletal alter-egos rock out from beyond the grave (and back again). More than halfway through October now, and it's high time for a followup to the first "Scary Monsters" roundup of the year, the one that pointed to several ongoing month-long cinephilic celebrations of Halloween. Before taking a look at a few recent and upcoming releases, let's begin with a list, namely, Glenn Kenny's at MSN Movies, the "50 Scariest Movies of All Time." At Some Came Running, Glenn kicks himself for forgetting to include Erle C Kenton's Island of Lost Souls (1932) with Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi: "In my defense, I've long held that it's not a real 'greatest' list unless it complains at least one completely bone-headed and inexcusable omission, and the omission of Souls, I would say, constitutes a particularly distinguished instance of such." It doesn't matter if you're a black swan or a white swan; we're sure you're going to want to bring home the dementedness that is Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

Since Scream 4 is coming out in theaters shortly, it is only appropriate that the Scream trilogy is being re-released in glorious Blu-ray. Bring home the franchise created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson that gave the horror genre a booster shot back in the mid 1990s. A trio from the original cast -- Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette -- will be gracing the big screens with a whole new cast soon enough.

Dread Central learned today that the final film in the Coffin Joe trilogy, The Embodiment of Evil, will be hitting home video here in the States on March 8th instead of the originally announced Fenruary date which has already come and gone.

The film is directed by and stars Portuguese filmmaker José Mojica Marins and is the third film in the Coffin Joe trilogy, following At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964) and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967).

The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements will include:

While most of the world had its eyes on Beijing and the Olympics this past week, DC's intrepid reporters Butane, Syxx, Foy, Uc, and yours truly have been scouring the globe for genre news and views to send your way. Although I'm not following the Games much myself, I thought for this August 9-15, 2008, Weekly Wrap-Up, I'd join the fray and employ an international theme focusing on projects outside the good ol' Us of A.

Considering this is also the week that brought news of a possible Bigfoot being found, it makes sense to start with a nature-run-amok item. Coming soon from Korea is Chaw, about a man-eating, mutant boar with a bad attitude. The producers are promising some realistic, frightening effects despite the creature being mostly CG, and we'll see how they do. Rogue managed to use CG successfully; hopefully Chaw will too.
