Frontier Outpost

Charles Starrett, with the inept help of Smiley Burnette, rescues stolen government gold from some bad guys near an abandoned fort. But when he tries to deliver it to its intended destination, he's arrested. There's an communique from the abandoned post saying he stole the gold. Neither has that fort ever been out of communications. Fortunately he's the Durango Kid, able to pull a second, black horse out of nowhere. With Burnette to distract the audience with his comic songs, Starrett will figure out what happened, restore the gold and arrest the bad guys.

The writing on the Durango Kid B westerns is still up to snuff -- although that horse is never explained -- but even director Ray Nazarro can't do much with a shrinking budget that kept the series solvent for Columbia. There's one exciting chase at the end, and I enjoyed Burnette's song about food.

Federal agent Steve Lawton -alias the Durango Kid- works undercover with his assistant, Smiley Burnette, to track down an outlaw gang that is raiding government gold shipments bound for Fort Navajo.

Frontier Outpost has its fair share of intrigue, duplicitous characters and a deserted fort is a back drop for most of the time. It's another action-packed Durango Kid - it's simple yet fun. Smiley Burnette does what he does best -act like a buffoon. His hollering can be annoying at times. Ends with a lively finale. Formula stuff but done with energy. Not many songs - the plot is too busy to accommodate Smiley's warbling.
