When John and Red first approach Marie's apartment, Red says "Maybe Vanning's inside." However, they would not have known him by that name at this point. They knew him only by his real name, Rayburn. Earlier, in the car, they asked him what name he was going by now, but he didn't answer. They were calling him Rayburn then. They also had looked at his wallet but said he was smart, carrying no identification. Therefore, they wouldn't have known him as Vanning yet. They'd never heard that name.

When John and Red's car is shown going off the road, there is no guardrail. When James and Doc drive up to the accident site, there is a wooden guardrail (broken where the car hit it) extending a long way in both directions. Also, the car shown going off the road is a 1956 Ford Customline, but the wreck at the bottom of the hillside is a 1950 or 1951 DeSoto.

When Ben is surveilling Vanning's apartment at 4 a.m., there are sheer curtains on the windows as seen from outside and inside the apartment. However, in the shot through the binoculars, the curtains have disappeared.

In the scene where Vanning is carrying two suitcases across the street, there is a police officer directing traffic in the background. When the scene switches to a long shot, the traffic cop has suddenly moved to the other side of the intersection and Vanning is in a different crosswalk at the intersection (E. 6th St. and S. Los Angeles St.).

When John and Red take Vanning for a ride at night, they pass several of the same locations twice, including a Desmond's Department Store. Also, when the shots switch from the back seat to Red driving the speed of the car suddenly changes. Finally, they are driving a long time on a busy commercial street in Los Angeles, but never have to stop for a red light.

The shack is missing windows, has holes in the roof, and the door is damaged, but the inside of the shack is dry with no signs of snow or water infiltration at all.

When John and Red take Vanning on a ride out to the oil field, when their car comes to a stop, the filter used for the day-for-night shots is plainly visible across the top half of the picture.

At the camp, when James Vanning sees the speeding car, he says, "It's going to go over!" even though the car is basically going down a straight road in a fairly straight line (no evidence of driving crazy enough to go off the road). Immediately afterward, the car brakes and swerves hard to the right and drives off the road - something no one could have anticipated until it happened.
