In one scene, Nasty Canasta is reading a Grave Diggers joke book by Burke and Hare. Burke and Hare were notorious murderers in Scotland in the early 1800s who murdered people and sold the bodies to a surgeon, who then used the bodies for anatomical study.
Canasta is an actual card game. It is attributed to some bridge players in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939. The game was developed as a shorter version of bridge and soon reached the U.S., where it is still played.
For reasons unknown, layout artist Maurice Noble covered the walls of Nasty Canasta's house with pages taken from the New Yorker magazine, which are visible throughout the entire scene. One source identified one portion from the April 19, 1947 issue, page 87. This the beginning of a short story, "A Case of Congestion," by Evelyn Eaton.
Daffy's little red wagon was a staple plaything of the era. One of the most popular models was the Radio Flyer, which still transports kids of all ages in 2023.
At one point during Daffy and Canasta's fight, Canasta hits him so hard that Porky's shirt turns purple for a frame or two.
