Researcher James Lee Wong is on the scene as archaeologist Dr. John Benton, recently returned from an expedition in China where a valuable ancient scroll was recovered, is murdered while giving a lecture on the expedition.

Southern University Archeology professor John Benton has just returned with his team from an expedition in Mongolia. One team member, Mason, the co-pilot, did not return as he went missing and is presumed dead. Benton is presenting his findings in a public forum, those findings which he purports would be of great significance to the Chinese government and the security of the Chinese people. Halfway through his presentation before he gets to the importance of his findings, Benton collapses. While the collapse was initially thought to be due to exhaustion, he shortly thereafter dies from what is eventually discovered to be from being poisoned. SFPD Captain Bill Street with Homicide leads the investigation. The primary suspects are anyone who went on the expedition, Benton's secretary Win Len, and one of Benton's students, researcher James Lee Wong as he shows an inordinate interest in the case. Street begins instead to trust Wong as they investigate together.—Huggo

In the middle of a pictorial lecture on his recent expedition to the Mongolian Desert, Dr. John Benton the famous explorer, drinks from the water bottle on his lecture table, collapses and dies. His last words "Eternal Fire" are the only clue Chinese researcher Jimmy Wong and Captain Street of the police department have to work on. Win Lee, Benton's secretary, reveals the doctor's dying words refer to a scroll which tells the location of rich oil deposits.
