Republic Pictures did not produce enough horror films to put together a television syndication package. As a result, once Republic completed the first run and subsequent re-releases, it was rarely seen and almost forgotten over nearly 70 years.
Republic produced this in response to the boxoffice success other studios were having with the horror genre, especially producer Val Lewton's profits with his low budget production of "Cat People" (1942) at RKO. This film even used the term "cat people" several time in the dialog.
This film was produced along "Valley of the Zombies" (1946) to create Republic's first pre-packaged horror double feature.
At the time, Republic was best known for its rousing westerns and serials. This film even includes a typical Republic fistfight and even a horse and buggy chase.
