A Song to Remember is a fictionalized biopic about the life of Polish pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin [1810-1849] (played by Cornel Wilde).
The screenplay for the movie was written by American screenwriter Sidney Buchman, adapted from a story by Austrian film-maker Ernst Marischka.
Professor Elsner (Paul Muni) relays to Chopin the message from Constantia (Nina Foch) asking for support to get the Polish uprisers, once friends of Chopin, out of jail. At first, Chopin is noncommital. Then he has a change of heart and asks Louis Pleyel (George Coulouris) to arrange for a European tour with all the concert proceeds to go to Elsner. George Sand (Merle Oberon) is adamantly against it, but Chopin perseveres, although he gets weaker and weaker with each passing concert. At his last concert in Pleyel Hall in Paris, he collapses and takes to his sickbed. Elsner takes the message to Sand that Chopin is dying and is asking for her, but she chooses not to see him. Sometime later, Chopin passes away quietly with Constantia and Professor Elsner at his bedside.
Frédéric Chopin died on 17 October 1849 at the age of 39. Death was attributed to tuberculosis.
