- Young Thumper: He doesn't walk very good, does he?
- Mrs. Rabbit: Thumper!
- Young Thumper: Yes, mama?
- Mrs. Rabbit: What did your father tell you this morning?
- Young Thumper: If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all.
- Mrs. Rabbit: Thumper.
- Young Thumper: Yes, Mama?
- Mrs. Rabbit: What did your father tell you?
- Young Thumper: About what?
- Mrs. Rabbit: About eating the blossoms and leaving the greens?
- Young Thumper: Oh, that one. Eating greens is a special treat. It makes long ears and great big feet.
- [on the side, to Bambi]
- Young Thumper: But it sure is awful stuff to eat. I made that last part up myself.
- Young Bambi: Mother! Mother!
- [Bambi searches frantically for his mother. Suddenly he gasps, startled by a shadow in front of him. It is The Great Prince of the Forest]
- Great Prince of the Forest: Your mother can't be with you anymore.
- [Bambi closes his eyes and bows his head, as a single tear comes out of his eye]
- Great Prince of the Forest: Come, my son.
- Young Flower: [about two birds fluttering around] Well! What's the matter with them?
- Young Thumper: Why are they acting that way?
- Friend Owl: Why, don't you know? They're twitterpated.
- Young Flower, Young Thumper, Young Bambi: Twitterpated?
- Friend Owl: Yes. Nearly everybody gets twitterpated in the springtime. For example: you're walking along, minding your own business. You're looking neither to the left, nor to the right, when all of a sudden, you run smack into a pretty face. Woo-woo! You begin to get weak in the knees. Your head's in a whirl. And then you feel light as a feather; and before you know it, you're walking on air. And then you know what? You're knocked for a loop, and you completely lose your head!
- Young Thumper: Gosh. That's awful.
- Young Flower: Gee whiz.
- Young Bambi: Terrible!
- Friend Owl: And that ain't all. It can happen to anybody. So you'd better be careful.
- [points at Bambi]
- Friend Owl: It could happen to you...
- [points at Thumper]
- Friend Owl: ... and you, and...
- [Flower looks at Owl shyly]
- Friend Owl: Yes, it could even happen to you!
- Young Thumper: Well, it's not gonna happen to me.
- Young Bambi: Me neither.
- Young Flower: Me neither.
- Friend Owl: You know, just the other day, I was talking to myself about you, and we were wondering what had become of you.
- Young Bambi: He stopped and looked at me.
- Bambi's Mother: Yes, I know.
- Young Bambi: Why was everyone still when he came on the meadow?
- Bambi's Mother: Everyone respects him. For of all the deer in the forest, not one has lived half so long. He's very brave and very wise. That's why he's known as the Great Prince of the Forest.
- Young Thumper: I'm thumpin'! That's why they call me Thumper!
- [we hear an echo of "They call me Thumper!" from inside the log]
- [Bambi and the rabbits come across a small flock of birds twittering in a tree. Bambi looks at them intriguingly]
- Young Thumper: Those are birds.
- Young Bambi: Bur... Bur!
- Young Thumper: Look! He's trying to talk.
- Young Bambi: Bur!
- Girl Bunny: He's trying to say "bird".
- Young Thumper: Say "bird".
- [wiggles his nose]
- Young Bambi: Bur...
- [wiggles his nose]
- Young Thumper: Bird.
- Young Bambi: Bur!
- Young Thumper: Uh-uh... bir-duh!
- Other rabbits: [indistinctly] Come on, say "bird". Say "bird"!
- Young Bambi: [inhales deeply, then throws everyone back by his yelling, including the birds] Bir-d!
- Friend Owl: Same thing every spring.
- [Sarcastically mocking the birds]
- Friend Owl: "Tweet-tweet, tweet-tweet! Tweet-tweet, tweet-tweet!" Love's sweet song. Hm! Pain in the pinfeathers, I call it!
- Young Bambi: Bird, bird, bird, bird, bird, bir...!
- [he sees a yellow butterfly, which he begins to chase until it lands on his tail]
- Young Bambi: Bird!
- Young Thumper: No, that's not a bird. That's a butterfly.
- Young Bambi: Butterfly? Butter...
- [Bambi sees the butterfly has now gone; he then runs over to a big yellow flower among some other wildflowers]
- Young Bambi: Butterfly!
- Young Thumper: [giggling] No, that's a flower.
- Young Bambi: Flower?
- Young Thumper: Uh-huh, it's purty.
- [Thumper smells the flowers]
- Young Bambi: Purty.
- [Bambi starts smelling the flowers, and comes nose-to-nose with a little skunk]
- Young Bambi: Flower!
- Young Flower: Me?
- Young Thumper: [laughing hysterically] No, no, no, no! That's not a flower! He's a little...
- Young Flower: Oh, that's all right. He can call me a flower if he wants to.
- [looks up briefly, then chuckles]
- Young Flower: I don't mind.
- Young Bambi: Purty. Purty *flower*!
- Young Flower: Oh...
- [he laughs]
- Young Flower: Gosh.
- Young Thumper: Whatcha gonna call 'im?
- Bambi's Mother: Well, I think I'll call him Bambi.
- Young Thumper: Bambi... Yep, I guess that'll do all right.
- Young Thumper: Hiya, Bambi! Watch what I can do!
- [jumps into the frozen pond and slides on the ice]
- Young Thumper: Come on, it's all right. Look.
- [thumps on ice]
- Young Thumper: The water's stiff.
- Great Prince of the Forest: It is Man. He is here again. There are many this time. We must go deep into the forest. Hurry! Follow me!
- Adult Bambi: Faline!
- Young Thumper: Whatcha doin'? Hibernatin'?
- Young Flower: [yawns] Uh-huh.
- Young Bambi: Whatcha wanna do that for?
- Young Flower: [chuckles] All us Flowers sleep in the winter. Well, good night.
- [Bambi and his mother are eating grass; suddenly she stands in attention]
- Bambi's Mother: Bambi. Quick! The thicket!
- [they run; a gunshot is heard]
- Bambi's Mother: Faster! Faster, Bambi! Don't look back! Keep running! Keep running!
- [Gunshot is heard, then silence]
- Bambi's Mother: That's little Faline.
- Young Faline: He's kind of bashful, isn't he, mama?
- Aunt Ena: Well, maybe he wouldn't be if you'd say hello.
- Young Faline: Hello, Bambi.
- Young Faline: I said hello.
- Bambi's Mother: Well, aren't you gonna answer her?
- Young Bambi: [Shakes head no]
- Bambi's Mother: You're not afraid, are you?
- Young Bambi: [Shakes head no]
- Bambi's Mother: Well, then, go ahead.
- Bambi's Mother: Go on, say hello.
- Young Bambi: Hello.
- [hiding from the Hunter]
- 1st Pheasant: [agitated] Listen... he's coming!
- 2nd Pheasant: [whispers] Hush.
- 3rd Pheasant: Keep quiet.
- 1st Pheasant: [panic rising] He's coming closer!
- 3rd Pheasant: Keep calm - don't get excited.
- 1st Pheasant: We'd better fly!
- 2nd Pheasant: No! No don't fly!
- 3rd Pheasant: Whatever you do, don't fly!
- 1st Pheasant: [hysterical] He's almost here! I CAN'T STAND IT ANY LONGER!
- [she takes off in a panic; there is a gunshot, and she falls to the ground]
- Bambi's Mother: Bambi, wait! You must never rush out on the meadow. There might be danger. Out there, we're unprotected. The meadow is wide and open, and there are no trees or bushes to hide us. So we have to be very careful. Wait here. I'll go out first. And if the meadow is safe, I'll call you.
- Adult Bambi: Hello Friend Owl. Don't you remember me?
- Friend Owl: Why it's the young prince, Bambi! My my how you've changed. Turn around there let me look at you, I see you've traded in your spots for a pair of antlers!
- [laughs]
- Friend Owl: You know, just the other day I was talking to myself about you, and we were wondering what had become of you.
- Adult Thumper: Hello Bambi! Remember me?
- [Starts thumping]
- Adult Bambi: Thumper!
- Adult Thumper: Right-o!
- [laughs]
- Flower: Hi fellas!
- Adult Bambi: Flower!
- Flower: Yeah!
- [Sniffs flowers]
- Young Bambi: Mother, look! What's all that white stuff?
- Bambi's Mother: Why, it's snow.
- Young Bambi: Snow?
- Bambi's Mother: Yes. Winter has come.
- Young Thumper: It's delicious. Why don't you try some? No, no, not that green stuff. Just eat the blossoms. That's the good stuff.
- Young Bambi: Winter sure is long, isn't it?
- Bambi's Mother: It seems long. But it won't last forever.
