This is Laurel & Hardy's last two-reel short, except for a cameo appearance in On the Wrong Trek (1936). Hal Roach decided to move the pair into feature-length films from here on.
A cinematic device was used in this short that is either extremely rare or might even be unique to this film. For the major scene changes--from the Oliver Hardy home to the bank, or the transition to the hospital-- as the actors were leaving one scene they grabbed the edge of the film, as it were, pulling it right-to-left as if it were a curtain, only the "curtain" was the film for the next scene. At the end, they actually make reference to this trick. As they are leaving the hospital, Ollie--who has taken on Stan's mannerisms and dress due to a blood transfusion gone wrong--says, "Wait a minute, I forgot something", whereupon he grabs the edge of the screen and drags it to the left, revealing "The End".
It was during the shooting of this last Laurel & Hardy short that A. J. Jefferson, Stan Laurel's father, visited the set. It was the first time that he had the opportunity of seeing his son perform on-camera.
Having previously played their own twins, their own children, and each other's wives, there was nothing left for Laurel & Hardy to do but play each other at the end of this short. Laurel gets to do a Hardy tie twiddle, and Hardy the Laurel cry.
The $300 Stan and Ollie were out for the clock in 1935 would be worth over $6,900 in 2024, adjusted for inflation.
