Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans was adapted for the screen by screenplay writer Carl Mayer based on the short story Die Reise nach Tilsit by German novelist Hermann Sudermann [1857-1928].
Der Jazzsänger (1927) (1927) is usually credited with being the first talking movie, utilizing sound-on-disc methods (aka Vitaphone) that employed a phonograph to play to the film, a method that sometimes resulted in desynchronization when the record got out of sync with the movie. Sunrise is credited with being the first movie to be released using Movietone for sound. Movietone is a sound-on-film method that records the sound as an optical strip on the same strip of film used to record the pictures, therefore it guarantees synchronization between sound and picture.
