Image
Exclusive: Jamie Bacon, Brandon Mychal Smith, Monroe Cline and James Oliver Wheatley are to front Pretty Boy Delaney, a gritty indie pic set to the backdrop of the fentanyl crisis.

Filming is underway on the pic, which is billed as a character-driven drama tackling addiction, mental health, and homelessness. 1 of the Most Influential Horror Movies Gets a Huge Update 25 Years Later
Image
A beloved found-footage horror classic finds its way back into the public consciousness with an encouraging update for its legion of fans. The Blair Witch Project secures a new re-release after its producer claims fans have long been watching the wrong version of it.

Via his X (formerly Twitter page), The Blair Witch Project producer Michael Monello confirmed an updated and upscaled version of the movie that is now available via home video in Europe. According to Monello, The Blair Witch Project's new edition is the one he and the movie's creative team intended to release initially but couldn't due to the technological constraints they encountered when the original version debuted in 1999. When the film premiered on home video, distributors Artisan "made a huge mistake," by working from a 35mm telecine transfer rather than the DigiBeta master originally used, causing "serious motion errors." The footage also looked grainier and...

This Psychological Horror Remake Doesn't Come Close to the Petrifying Original
Image
It's always amazing when a filmmaker gets to revisit the stories they never fully got to tell. Whether it be budgetary restraints or producers' influence, it's great when a director returns to the movies they created years ago, getting the chance to flesh them out in ways they couldn't before and, hopefully, granting them the cathartic climaxes they deserved. That seemed to be the intent of horror director Anthony Diblasi on his movie, 2023's Malum; focusing on a rookie cop facing off with demonic cult members, this story is an almost direct remake of the director's earlier, widely acclaimed movie, 2014's Last Shift.

Malum Review: A Nightmare Reworking of Familiar Fears
Image
Anthony Diblasi’s 2023 film Malum tells a harrowing tale that unfolds over rookie police officer Jessica Loren’s first night shift alone at a soon-to-be closed-down police station. Nine years after his chilling film Last Shift covered similar ground, Diblasi revisits the story with this remake. Malum thrusts Jessica into a nightmare as strange happenings and unexplainable visions plague her shift.

On the one-year anniversary of her father’s tragic death, Jessica volunteers for the final shift at the old Lanford police station, hoping to find answers. As her night progresses, Jessica’s reality begins to blur. Terrifying phone calls and uninvited intruders disrupt her shift, while flashbacks reveal new information about her father and his fateful encounter with the sinister cult known as The Flock of the Low God. Strange sights and unearthly presences haunt the empty hallways, but is there a rational explanation or has an unseen evil...

‘Exhume’ – Horror Movie from ‘Last Shift’ Writer Now Available on Digital
Image
From the writer of Last Shift and its remake Malum, 123 Go Films has released Scott Poiley’s horror movie Exhume (2017) onto Digital and VOD outlets, we’ve learned this week.

Written and directed by Scott Poiley, Exhume stars William Haze (The Punisher), Alice Rietveld (Skyfire) and Sarah Sculco.

123 Go Films previews, “Inspired by true events, this edge-of-your-seat horror will have you guessing what is happening to this family.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis: “Over 50 unmarked graves were discovered in Marianna, Florida at an institution dedicated to the rehabilitation of troubled children. Patrick Connor and his wife Karen Connor were the archeologists that uncovered the evil buried under the earth so many years ago. During their excavation of the vast property, their troubled daughter, Emma, began to experience what she thought was episodes of sleepwalking. Patrick soon found out; this was the furthest thing from the truth.

“As the days progressed,...

Mind Body Spirit Review: A Unique Found Footage Frightfest
Image
Who said found footage horror movies are dead? Pun intended and they're thriving. Last year's Lola was a masterpiece, though it wasn't exactly a frightfest like, say, Mind Body Spirit, which drops on digital platforms this week. If the title evokes yoga vibes, that's partly the point. Yes, this movie hits a lot of notes: horror, found footage, yoga, supernatural and more. Hey, yoga once helped Giancarlo Esposito bring his iconic Breaking Bad character to life, but a fictional movie like Mind Body Spirit warns that, combined with the wrong elements, such practices can run haywire.

Directors Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda prove that the possibilities for this fun little subgenre of cinema are seemingly endless. It's no surprise that Welcome Villain Films is the brand behind this horror entry's release, the same studio that released the hard-to-watch movie Beaten to Death and the terrifying film Malum not too long ago.

UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘Challengers’ to open serve in more than 700 cinemas
Image
Luca Guadagnino’s love triangle drama Challengers starts its UK-Ireland box office campaign this weekend through Warner Bros.

Opening in 702 sites with additional venues still being added, the film stars Zendaya, 2016 Screen Star of Tomorrow Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in the story of three aspiring tennis professionals fighting both for championships and romantically.

Initially programmed as the opening film of last year’s Venice Film Festival, Challengers was withdrawn following the actors’ strike, which would have prevented its starry cast from promoting the release.

It is Italian filmmaker Guadagnino’s eighth feature film. He broke out internationally with his fifth,...

Malum review | A gorily effective horror remake
Image
A young rookie cop faces the worst shift of her life in an abandoned police station. Here’s our review of the indie horror, Malum, in cinemas now.

Most of us have done nightmarish shifts at work. Regardless of your industry, no one is immune to a bad day. Maybe a customer yelled at you, you had to clean up a mess of something yucky, or perhaps everything that could go wrong, just went wrong.

Still: I doubt any of us have experienced quite as bad a shift as Jessica Loren does in Anthony Diblasi’s Malum.

Malum is in fact a remake, or more of a reimagining, of Diblasi’s 2015 film Last Shift. Remaking your own film less than 10 years after it was released might seem silly, but Malum manages to successfully squeeze more out of Last Shift’s deceivingly simple premise.

The basic idea and plot are the same in both films.

‘Malum’ Review
Image
Stars: Eric Olson, Jessica Sula, Candice Coke, Kevin Wayne, Natalie Victoria, Chaney Morrow | Written by Anthony Diblasi, Scott Poiley | Directed by Anthony Diblasi

Malum is, according to its press release “a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, Last Shift”. Now some may simply take that as a fancy way of saying it’s a remake of a film that’s less than ten years old. But there’s a difference between this and your average remake, it’s the work of the original director Anthony Diblasi and his co-writer Scott Poiley.

I considered revisiting Last Shift before watching Malum because while I remembered the basic plot and that I really liked the first hour then being let down by the final act, I didn’t recall a lot of the details. But, in part due to how knowing what to expect spoiled the impact of another recent reimagining,...

Craig Fairbrass in Villain (2020)
Malum/Hunt Her, Kill Her review – double bill of low-budget, single-location horror
Craig Fairbrass in Villain (2020)
Welcome Villain Films presents two fright-fests, but tired tricks, bad acting and some head-banging repetition leads to hackneyed hokum

New horror-focused studio Welcome Villain are aiming to be the next Blumhouse, but judging by this double bill of early releases it could be a long road. Both aim to maximise low-budget returns by restricting themselves to a single location – an approach that worked very well recently for filling station ordeal Night of the Hunted, not to mention of course the apex of horror, The Shining. But in truth neither of these makes strong use of its chosen locale, and both are tired, borderline exhausted deployments of the audience-prodding, jump-scare bag of tricks.

Malum (★★☆☆☆), by director Anthony Diblasi, at least gives its backstory a bit of welly. A reworking of his 2014 film Last Shift, it sees rookie police officer Jessica (Jessica Sula) choose to work a solo shift at the old...

‘You Shouldn’t Have Let Me In’ Review (Tubi Original)
Image
Stars: Diana Gardner, Nathaniel Ansbach, Isabella Egizi, Davide Nurra, Anastasiya Bogach, Giulia Nunnari, Fabián Castro, Riccardo Angelini | Written by Michael Lucid, Mary O’Neil | Directed by Dave Parker

After The Dead Hate the Living! and The Hills Run Red, Dave Parker was getting referred to as the next big thing in horror. Then in 2012 he made ColdWater which sat on the shelf for four years before being dumped on the streaming market as It Watches, killing his career momentum in the process. In the years since, he’s only directed one feature, Puppet Master: Doktor Death, and a pair of compilations, all for Full Moon. His new film, You Shouldn’t Have Let Me In, is a Tubi Original, and I’m not sure if that’s a step up or down career wise, but at least it’s a directing gig.

It begins with Kelsey and her friend Blake taking a...

Why Dark Harvest is the Most Recent Must-See Pre-Halloween Horror Release
Image
Dark Harvest released on October 13 on Apple TV+. It is based on the novel of the same title by Norman Partridge. From the beginning, the premise of Dark Harvest raises flags that it takes place in a world where things are not what they seem on the surface, like Dark City or The Village. It is set in 1963, in a small town with one road in or out, surrounded by corn fields to the horizon. No one is allowed to leave, except for the teen boys who win the contest on Halloween night to kill the scarecrow demon, Sawtooth Jack. Said victor receives a new car, his family gets a new house on the nice side of town, and he gets to venture out into the world – whatever world there is at the end of that road.

Where Dark Harvest Begins

The movie starts with a cold open on Halloween...

Why Malum and The Outwaters are the Most Violent Horror Movies of 2023
Image
So, you watched Evil Dead Rise, and now your appetite is wet for some more juicy horror. Two new horror movies were released in February and March that are the most extreme horror movies so far this year, and which deliver the jump scares and psychological terror you have been missing in horror. Those two movies are The Outwaters and Malum. They create a no-holds-barred, blood-soaked, surreal double feature for your Friday night. It is the surrealism that allows them to display the bizarre and to keep the audience on edge, wondering what is happening. Both films are leaving sanity behind, and exploring creatures, dreams, and other dimensions that a realistic, grounded horror cannot travel to.

The last three years, we have seen a return of horror. Perhaps the low budgets and high rewards ratio are to thank or the uncertainty of big-budget franchise movies to deliver box office with increasingly unimpressive CGI,...

‘Malum’ (2023) Ending, Explained: Does Jessica Loren Survive?
Image
The occult/supernatural horror sub-genres has been going around for a while, with some international gems going seemingly unnoticed because of a lack of mainstream coverage. The Turkish Dabbe 4 and the Taiwanese Incantation are some of the scariest occult horror pieces that you could try out if you’re truly feeling adventurous. If you’d rather prefer some good ol’ American occult instead where young women are sacrificed to some pre-Biblical King of Hell, then Anthony Diblasi’s remake of his 2014 horror Last Shift is right up your alley. The 2023 supernatural horror Malum follows more-or-less the same plot as its predecessor, with slight tweaks here and there and a greater emphasis on the gore. The story follows Jessica, daughter of cop Will Loren, who returns to the soon-to-be-decommissioned police station where something diabolical happened one year ago. With a few changes to the approach and the way 2023’s Jessica is...

10 Low Budget Horror Movies That Deserve Remakes
Image
While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.

A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

Directed by Sam Curtain from a script he co-wrote with Benjamin Jung-Clarke, “Beaten to Death” unfolds after a desperate choice leads a man named Jack down a path that leaves him beaten and bruised as he struggles against man, nature, and his own insanity. According to the official logline, Jack, “stranded in the middle of nowhere after barely surviving a horrific assault, encounters one local after another and quickly learns that a sick game of cat and mouse is about to begin. Battling the deranged country psychos and the harsh landscape, Jack must go to extreme lengths to survive.”

“From the initial story inception, I wanted to achieve two things,” Curtain said.

‘Malum’ and ‘Last Shift’: Companion Films Forged in the Fires of Hell
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Last Shift (2014) and Malum (2023).

Nothing divides the horror community like a remake. For decades fans have debated the merits of cinematic retellings of our most beloved horror films with strong arguments on either side of the equation. The trend exploded in the early 2000s with Platinum Dunes leading the charge to remake or reboot nearly every iconic title available. Recent years have seen the rise of legacy sequels; a curious hybrid that simultaneously continues the original story and (hopefully) takes the franchise in a new direction. Enter Malum. Anthony Diblasi’s 2023 gore-fest is an expanded reimagining of his own breakout film Last Shift. Released in 2014, this haunting cult horror follows rookie police officer Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy) whose first shift on the job goes terrifyingly wrong.

Co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, Last Shift is an atmospheric nightmare with most of its terror coming...

Malum Review
Image
Plot: On a search to uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding her father’s death, a newly appointed police officer, Jessica Loren is assigned to the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. The lone officer at the station, she soon finds herself barraged by terrifying paranormal events, and in the process, is taken on a journey during which she learns the shocking truth behind her family’s entanglement with a demented cult leader.

Review: Reboots are nothing new these days, but rarely do you find a filmmaker who remakes his own film released not even ten years prior. Anthony Diblasi, a protege of Clive Barker who has produced or directed three adaptations of the British author’s writing, released Last Shift in 2014. The little-seen flick, written by Diblasi and Scott Polley, followed a rookie cop witnessing supernatural events in a police station.

Arthouse Crowd Warms To Tough New York Drama ‘A Thousand And One’; ‘His Only Son’ Sustains Faith-Based Winning Streak – Specialty Box Office
Image
Focus Features’ Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner A Thousand And One opened to a solid $1.8 million at 926 theaters — $1,942 per theater average — supported by a 96% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score and a B+ CinemaScore. It came no. 7 at the domestic box office, a strong showing for a complex, gritty film in a slow-to-recover specialty market.

“The fantastic critical response coupled with Teyana’s raw, powerhouse performance gives us confidence this film will continue to resonate with audiences across the country,” said Lisa Bunnell, Focus Features President of Distribution.

New York was the top market, overperforming with 18% of sales so far this weekend. Atlanta, D.C., Chicago and Philadelphia also have stronger than usual market shares for the debut feature from video and short film director A.V. Rockewell. Teyana Taylor is stunning as an unapologetic, free-spirited young Black woman, Inez, who kidnaps her six-year-old son Terry from the foster care system. They embark on a life together,...

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Brings Honor to the Box Office
Image
“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount) — a franchise reboot, not a remake or sequel — provided the weekend with the fifth straight film to open to over $30 million. While not unprecedented for the month — it last happened in March 2017, with four out of five openings over $40 million, three of those over $85 million — it’s unusual. More importantly, it reflects the steady rebound of 2023.

“D&d” received better-than-expected reviews (70 Metacritic score) and a boost from its SXSW premiere, but credit also goes to built-in interest for the world-building dice game and good word of mouth (A- Cinemascore).

At $38.5 million it landed ahead of pre-release projections, although short of the $40 million that seemed possible after Friday’s returns. Saturday saw a 15 percent drop, a bit above average but hardly cause for worry. With spring or Easter break ahead for many schools, this has a chance to sustain. For exhibitors, that’s short-term good news; for Paramount,...

Malum: Anthony Diblasi’s Last Shift reimagining is now in theatres
Image
About seven months ago, we heard that director Anthony Diblasi was making an “expanded reimagining” of his well-received 2014 horror feature Last Shift. That reimagining, titled Malum, is now in theatres, and you can check out a behind-the-scenes featurette in the embed above.

Jessica Sula (Split) stars in Malum, which has the following synopsis: On a search to uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding her father’s death, a newly appointed police officer, Jessica Loren (Sula) is assigned to the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. The lone officer at the station, she soon finds herself barraged by terrifying paranormal events, and in the process, is taken on a journey during which she learns the shocking truth behind her family’s entanglement with a demented cult leader. Malum takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit Last Shift and flips it on its head,...

‘Malum’ Review – ‘Last Shift’ Reimagining Takes a Bigger and Bloodier Approach
Image
In a rare turn of events, director/co-writer Anthony Diblasi gives a new update to his own 2014 horror film Last Shift with Malum. Diblasi reunites with Last Shift co-writer Scott Poiley, creating an expanded story that strengthens the original narrative and offers even bloodier occult mayhem. Diblasi’s Malum serves as a perfect introduction to his twisted demonic realm while supporting his original film as a fascinating companion piece.

Rookie cop Jessica Loren requests the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. Loren hopes to use the solitude to her advantage as she searches the empty building for answers about her father’s strange death. What should be a simple, quiet evening becomes anything but when the cult members seem to reach out from beyond the grave, plaguing the officer with harrowing visions and torment in attempts to finish what they started.

Malum: A Horror Movie Remake With a Difference
Image
Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood, and horror movie remakes have long been a thriving part of the industry. Directors will turn their creepy, viral short films into larger studio features, like David F. Sandberg did with Lights Out, and surprise foreign genre hits will sometimes get a makeover for U.S. audiences with the original director at the helm. But you’d be hard pressed to find a modern American director who’s interested in remaking their own feature film.

Enter Clive Barker protégé Anthony Diblasi, who was certainly up for the challenge when he was approached by new genre studio Welcome Villain with the possibility of remaking his 2014 low-budget gem, Last Shift. The director believes he’s the first American director to take on such a feat since Leo McCarey remade Love Affair into An Affair to Remember in 1957.

This week, Welcome Villain releases Diblasi’s remade version of Last Shift,...

Q&a: Co-Writer/Director Anthony Diblasi and Co-Star Natalie Victoria Discuss Malum
Image
Reimagining his 2014 film Last Shift, filmmaker Anthony Diblasi's Malum follows a new police officer who is literally haunted by her father's past encounters with a malevolent cult during one final shift at a decommissioned police station. With Malum coming to theaters on March 31st via Welcome Villain Films, we caught up with Diblasi and actor Natalie Victoria, who reprises her role as Marigold from Last Shift with a reimagined twist!

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Anthony, and congratulations on your new movie Malum, a reimagining of your film Last Shift, which was very well-received when it was released in 2015. How did you initially decide to revisit the story of Last Shift nearly one decade later?

Anthony Diblasi: I was introduced to Luke Lebeau through a mutual friend and he had just formed Welcome Villain with his partners. We hit it off and he asked...

Horror Movie Director Explains Why He's Remaking His Own Film
Image
Malum director Anthony Diblasi explains why the 2023 horror film is a remake of one of his previous films. Malum follows a young police officer named Jessica (Jessica Sula), who is assigned to the final shift of a decommissioned police station, only to be tormented overnight by a supernatural entity. This is the same premise of Diblasi's 2015 video-on-demand film Last Shift, which starred Juliana Harkavy as Jessica.

Screen Rant recently sat down with Diblasi (who also produced the Clive Barker adaptation The Midnight Meat Train) to discuss Malum ahead of its release on March 31. When asked why he and screenwriter Scott Poiley decided to remake Last Shift instead of creating a sequel when presented with the opportunity, he revealed that they wanted to update their original work with a bigger budget. Even though they are proud of their original project, Diblasi "was confident about it playing with an audience in the...

‘Malum’ Set Visit – Expanded ‘Last Shift’ Reimagining Aims to Be Rollercoaster Ride from Hell
Image
There’s something inherently creepy about abandoned locations that make them well-suited for horror movies. The former Metro Police Department Headquarters Building, slated for demolition in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, is one of them.

Its labyrinthine layout, a dizzying maze of cell blocks adorned with sickly green tile and offices spread across multiple floors, presents the perfect setting for director Anthony Diblasi to tackle the production of Malum, an expanded retelling of his 2014 cult favorite Last Shift.

Malum marks the first original production from the new genre studio Welcome Villain Films, who invited Bloody Disgusting exclusively to the Louisville set to learn about the more extensive, bloodier reimagining. The more pressing question heading in, of course, was why remake the potently chilling Last Shift?

Diblasi answers that immediately, detailing how the desire to expand Last Shift’s audience evolved into a brand new reimagining that opened up the mythology in an exciting way.

Review: Malum is a Frightfest Remake Worth Checking Out
Image
Remakes are nothing new. They made up like 98% of the horror output through the 2000s, and though they have slowed to allow room for other types of storytelling (legacy sequels remain the current hotness), they are still very much a part of the horror landscape. The standard remakes are really no-brainers—a film reaches a certain age and the studio might want to breathe new life into it for an opportune release. Or maybe a director has a particular vision or a way to spin it for a more modern audience. And of course, foreign films are often remade in the US to make them more appealing to an American audience. The smallest subsection of remakes is a little harder to understand, and often leave audiences wondering, “Why?”

These are the ones that fall somewhere in the middle. The originals aren’t really that old, they were released in the...

‘Scream VI’ Directors Couldn’t Resist Sneaking in a ‘Jason Takes Manhattan’ Easter Egg [Interview]
Lincoln Center, 2019
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not) are back behind the camera for Scream VI, now playing in movie theaters nationwide.

In the brand new movie, “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”

That means we can expect themes and character arcs introduced in 2022’s Scream to deepen. With Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett at the helm, that also means brand new Easter eggs and franchise nods nestled within the slasher thrill ride. The franchise, since its inception, revolves around its commentary and reverence for the horror genre, after all.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with the directors ahead of the film’s release. They explained that they couldn’t resist one of the more obvious references regarding their New York City set sequel: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

The filmmakers hide...
