When the investigating officer rules the cause of death an accidental overdose, Lillian conducts her own investigation which leads her to an unlikely alliance with her son's former drug dealer. On her quest for answers, Lillian hallucinates some of the iconic characters she's played on stage which serve as her inner voice, urging her to avenge her son's death.

Melissa and not much else

Stage actress Lillian (Melissa Leo) investigates the death of her son. The police assumes it an accidental overdose but she is sure that he's in recovery. He had planned to propose to his pregnant girlfriend Olivia. His bandmates give Lillian his old drug dealer contact Taz (Bella Thorne).

This is a small crime indie. More importantly, it has Melissa Leo. She is the only interesting aspect. The filmmaking is lackluster and the writing is pretty bland. Melissa gives this some life. There is an obvious twist and final confrontation. This fails to understand that and it all falls flat. The insisting on doing Hamlet only slows the movie down but I understand that it's the New York acting thing. This needs a more daring filmmaker. This is the director's first and only credit. Maybe there will be some improvements in the future.

Ignore the noise it's not a 10 out of 10 but definitely a solid 8

Worth the watch some holes but nothing major.

I'm Still Watching

These reviews may represent climax and ending, but not too fast or too slow. I actually find it very intriguing so far and acting and writing not horrible. I'll provide an updated review because the low rating seems not well deserved so far....

Why, just give us a reason

The entire movie is about the Mother killing off all the people she suspects murdered her son with the help of his ex drug dealer. I say suspects because who the hell knows ? The cops think it was an accidental overdose.

The killings were very creative and actually quite interesting but the whole flashbacks thingy with the characters she plays on the stage constantly interspersing was just baffling and pretty silly.

The female leads were good but I still don't know how they came up with that list of suspects or what their supposed motive was.

I thought the ending would clear things up - but No. So I'm pretty bummed I wasted my time with this.

The pace is fast, but it failed to knit a tight plot. I even wonder the mother was misled. Still need a lot to improve. The Hamlet twist needs exploration. Not a bad idea.

This films plot draws references from the Edgar Allan Poe short story IMP OF THE UNIVERSE where the narrator explains his motive to his cell mate as the narrator is in prison convicted of murder. One of the methods used in the crime is a candle that emits poisonous fumes that kills somebody who slighted the narrator.

In the movie at: 105:24, the Photographer (Taz) is looking a pile of Stuff. The Carton of cigarettes are Gold & White. Carton says: "il fumo uccide" with the word :Figurati" on the side. Later at: 125:37, same scene, the Carton of cigarettes are completely different. The carton is now Red, White & Black and says: "Fire Hearts" with a different UPC code showing.
