Turner Classic Movies Will Honor Director William Friedkin With A Two-Night Cinematic Tribute
Image
Most directors would be more than happy to make a single touchstone genre film at some point in their careers. William Friedkin? He made two in just as many years. His 1971 crime thriller "The French Connection" established the template for car chase scenes that's still being used today. Then, in 1973, he made "The Exorcist," the film that got the world to start taking horror seriously as a high art form.

As if that wasn't enough, Friedkin also made not one but two quintessential pieces of queer cinema with "The Boys in the Band" and the controversial but undeniably important "Cruising." Even in his twilight years as a filmmaker, Friedkin was tackling provocative material in the forms of the stage play adaptations "Bug" and especially the twisted "Killer Joe" (a film that played a less-acknowledged yet key role in the McConaissance era of Matthew McConaughey's run as an actor).

‘Exorcist’ Director William Friedkin to Receive Turner Classic Movies Tribute
William Friedkin in Das Kindermädchen (1990)
William Friedkin, who died August 7 at the age of 87, will get a programming tribute courtesy of Turner Classic Movies in a two-part block on September 14 and November 26.

There will be a triple feature on September 14 of the Gene Hackman-starring “The French Connection,” to air at 8pm, followed by “To Live and Die in LA” at 10:00 pm.

The night will be capped off with “The Boys in the Band” from 1970, a pre-“French Connection” feature concerning a birthday party that was an, at the time, ground-breaking feature for LGBTQ representation.

Night two, over Thanksgiving weekend, will feature the TCM premiere of the 2018 documentary “Friedkin Uncut,” followed by “The Exorcist.” For those who still need more Friedkin gems, “Bug,” “Killer Joe” and “The Hunted” will fit the bill.

One of Friedkin’s first breakthroughs jobs was directing one of the last episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” Hitchcock would reportedly scold...

William Friedkin Explores His Career in First Trailer for ‘Friedkin Uncut’
Legendary director William Friedkin is getting his own career-spanning documentary with Francesco Zippel’s feature debut Friedkin Uncut. In a similar vein to Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s 2015 film De Palma, which allowed that eclectic director to discuss his filmography in-depth, Friedkin Uncut provides an opportunity for the filmmaker to discuss his early successes and his eventual financial failures.

One of the dominant voices in independent 1970s cinema, with his back to back classics The French Connection and The Exorcist, Friedkin, like most New Hollywood directors, couldn’t sustain his critical and financial success, creating a string of financial failures with Wages of Fear remake Sorcerer and erotic thriller Cruising, two films that have only gained critical stature in the ensuing years. A constant voice in independent film, Friedkin’s output has been steady, if somewhat under the radar with his most recent films, including his last two Tracy Letts collaborations,...

'Friedkin Uncut': Film Review | Venice 2018
William Friedkin - Hollywoods Enfant terrible (2018)
At the beginning of Friedkin Uncut, Italian documaker Francesco Zippel’s admiring career portrait, the 83-year-old subject compares “the two most interesting characters in history,” Jesus and Hitler. One brought the people he met up to heaven, and the other took them down to hell. There is good and evil in everybody, William Friedkin concludes wickedly, “even in me.”

It’s a startling aperture onto the bright, witty, original mind of a man who isn’t afraid to make unconventional leaps and rather dotes on controversy and hell-raising. And it illustrates the filmmaker's fascination with extreme ...

‘Friedkin Uncut’ Review: The Oscar-Winning Filmmaker Exorcises His Demons in Intimate Documentary — Venice
William Friedkin - Hollywoods Enfant terrible (2018)
When William Friedkin says that Hitler and Jesus are the two most interesting characters in history, one is inclined to listen. The Oscar-winning director of “The Exorcist,” “Sorcerer,” and “The French Connection” is fascinated by the extremes they represent: One brought people down to hell with him, the other helped them ascend to heaven. Friedkin proves so talkative in Francesco Zippel’s documentary about him, riffing on matters both cinematic and spiritual, that it’s almost surprising he didn’t pursue a career that allows him to do it more — you can almost imagine him in front of a congregation of his own.

He isn’t the only one with a lot to say. “Friedkin Uncut” also includes testimonials from collaborators and admirers such as Ellen Burstyn, Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, and Francis Ford Coppola; docs of this type never lack for talking heads, but there’s a sense that...
