After her father dies of a heart attack, Julie returns home to see her mother, Gail. But Gail is not herself these days, acting bizarrely and under the control of Warren, a highly intelligent criminal who wants to get his hands on her fortune.

Seventeen year old Julie Price and her mother Gail Price have had a strained relationship ever since Julie accepted an academic fellowship the year before and left to go away to school, leaving Gail feeling abandoned, especially as Julie's wealthy father, Gail's husband, Jeffery Price, is always away on business, he who shows his affection most often via his proverbial checkbook. Julie and Gail are brought back together for Jeffery's funeral, he, previously having had a stroke, dying of a heart attack while away on business. While Gail and Julie reconnect to some extent as loving mother and daughter, Gail tells Julie that the marriage was not going well because of his frequent absences, she who has been having an affair with financial broker, Warren Stacey. What Gail fails to tell Julie is that she suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID), Gail and her two other personalities - Madeline, the sexually aggressive one searching for love, and Amy, the six year old feeling abandoned by her mother "Julie" - are aware of each other, the DID which came into full light for Gail when Julie left. And what Gail doesn't know is that Warren, who knows all about Gail's DID, killed Jeffery and made it look like a heart attack in Warren and his real girlfriend, Toni Conrad, a bartender who initially met Madeline at the bar where she works, has been manipulating Gail in order to marry her to gain access to Jeffery's money. Knowing that something isn't quite right with her mother, Julie, with the help of her friend Mike Jared, one of Mike's professor's Jane Banner, and Jeffery's brother John Price, begins to suspect that Gail may be suffering from DID - Julie further trying to learn the root cause - while not at all trusting Warren. In the process, Julie's life may be in jeopardy as Warren will kill anyone who he believes is getting in his way of what is now Gail's wealth. The unknown factor is Sadie, another one of Gail's personalities, she the violent one who lashes out at anyone who wrongs her.—Huggo
