"Statica" is a most intriguing film which blends film noir camera work and the feel of "old time" Hollywood with a mystical, magical storyline. The film's dialogue stretches the viewer's mind and requires a view from a unique dimension. Solid performances by the entire cast, especially Jamison Bright. Following Stoker's journey throughout the film provided a complex and ever weaving path. Yes, Hitchcock would be proud of Jaminson Bright's commit to film nior, the plot, the dialogue and the use of angles, ligths. Overall quite an enjoyable film which requires muiliple viewings to capture the fimne details. A most watch -- several times.
Statica is a movie for which I interpreted as having a strong Hitchcock influence. Filmed in black and white, it was a brilliant epitomization of film noir. I actually noticed a musical score that caused me to have a flashback to Hitchcock's infamous shower scene in the movie Psycho. The characters were complex, mysterious, and predominantly female. As the movie unfolds, it becomes apparent that Bright, through his interpretation of the character Stoker, has a true understanding of the female psyche. I was awestruck! This movie blew my mind, and is the best I've watched in years. Bright is extremely talented, and is definitely one to watch!
Shy of not having an ND filter, which would have really enhanced some of the later overexposed scenes, Statica boasts some lavish cinematography for an indie micro budget title. It provides some of the loveliest wide shots of what an indie film can offer.
The film's post-modern opening, was a welcomed surprise - it helped set the tone for the film perfectly.
There's a strong lead male here, and the use of noir genre was so spot-on I'd be intrigued if they could (or would want to) extended to a sequel... as it feels authentically set up for a dark turn with a 'corpse in bed' opening for Statica 2 with a detective on the run.
All in all, a lovely self aware neo noir.
